Chapter 21: The Celestial Forge
The shop was a chaotic mess of shadows and silver sparks. Maya's knuckles were white as she gripped the iron hook, the shadow-beast thrashing beneath her. With one swift motion, Rahmat Ali's silver shears sliced through the darkness. Instead of blood, a thick, ink-like smoke pooled on the floor, hardening instantly into a piece of obsidian-black leather.
"One," Rahmat exhaled, his face pale. The blue butterfly circled him frantically, its glow dimming. He wrapped the shadow-hide in a cloth. "But the easy part is over. Now, we reach for the stars."
"How can you find a fallen star in a city of concrete and smog?" Maya asked, wiping sweat from her forehead.
Rahmat pointed to a dusty, cracked mirror in the corner of the shop. "We don't look up, Maya. We look back. Stars don't just fall; they leave an echo. A century ago, a fragment struck the old clock tower at the edge of the district. It's been hidden in the gears ever since, powering a clock that never stops ticking."
"The Infinite Clock Tower," Maya whispered. "People say anyone who enters loses their sense of time. Some come out aged by decades; others never come out at all."
"Which is why we must be fast," Rahmat said, grabbing his heavy leather apron. "The Void King's influence is growing. Can you feel that? The floorboards are shivering."
He was right. A low-frequency hum was vibrating through the soles of their shoes. The "Silver Stitch" Rahmat had made previously was beginning to fray, glowing with a sickly violet light.
"If that thread snaps before I forge the nails from the star-shard," Rahmat warned, "the door to the Void opens right here, in the middle of this shop. Pack the charcoal and the iron filings, Maya. We have three hours before the moon turns black."
As they stepped out of the shop, the streetlights flickered and died. The shadows on the pavement seemed to stretch toward them, hungry and alive. The cobbler and his apprentice began their sprint toward the towering silhouette of the clock tower, unaware that a pair of glowing violet eyes was watching them from the rooftops.
