The world trembled.
The air itself felt alive with power, thick with energy that crackled and hummed around Heron. He stood at the center of the chaos, the glow of the ancient symbols burning brighter on his skin. The ground beneath him quaked, and above him, the heavens themselves seemed to hold their breath.
Heron's body was still—frozen in place by the weight of the decision that loomed before him.
"Choose… Seal… or release…"
The voice echoed in his mind once more, deep and heavy, a sound that seemed to shake the very foundation of his being.
Heron's heart raced.
His mind screamed with uncertainty.
What did it mean to seal this power? And what would happen if he released it?
"Heron!" Kaelion's voice broke through his thoughts. "We don't have much time!"
Heron barely heard him. His focus was entirely on the creature below, the entity that was now fully awake—its massive form moving, shifting in the abyss, just out of sight but powerful enough to make the entire world tremble.
"Heron!" Kaelion repeated, stepping forward. "You need to make a choice! We can't hold this off forever!"
Heron's hands shook as he raised them slightly, feeling the immense pressure that built up inside him. The power inside his chest burned with an intensity he could no longer control. The symbols that had spread across his body now seemed to pulse in time with his heartbeat, as if calling out to the thing below.
The creature's form began to take shape—a shadow, massive and ominous, its presence overwhelming everything around it. The glowing eyes above Heron burned fiercely, their cold light casting a dark glow across the land. Every movement of the creature seemed to shake the very earth beneath his feet.
He could feel it.
The creature wasn't just some mindless force. It was ancient, intelligent, and it knew him. He was tied to it. Connected. Bound by some unknown power that he couldn't fully understand.
Heron swallowed hard.
Seal… or release?
The voice resonated again, clearer this time, carrying a sense of finality.
"The chains are breaking. The power is rising. Choose now."
Heron's chest tightened, his mind racing as the weight of the decision pressed on him. If he sealed the entity, it would remain locked away, trapped beneath the earth for eternity. But what would happen if he chose to release it? The consequences were unimaginable.
And yet—
It was already awakening.
The chains were breaking.
Heron felt a shift in his chest.
He wasn't the only one pulling at the power now.
The creature below was pulling on him too.
He could feel its desire to break free, to claim what it had lost. The force that had been sealed away for millennia now sought its freedom, and he—
He was the key.
"Heron!" Kaelion shouted, grabbing his shoulder. "You have to make a decision!"
Heron turned, his eyes wild, a mix of fear and determination in them.
"I don't know what to do," he said, his voice shaky. "I can't hold this much power. I don't even know what will happen if I let it go…"
The voice responded, its tone growing more urgent.
"Release me… and all will be yours. Seal me… and the gods will fall."
Heron's breath caught.
The gods—
He looked up at the figures surrounding him—Aethrion, Kaelion, Thalor, Veyra. They had all come to help him, but their faces were filled with worry, uncertainty. Even the mighty gods were powerless against what was now stirring beneath them.
Aethrion stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Heron.
"You must make the right choice, my son," Aethrion said softly, his voice filled with both authority and compassion. "This power is not something to be taken lightly. It is not just your future—it is the future of all worlds. If you release it, we cannot undo what follows."
Heron's heart pounded.
The entity below—
It was almost free.
It wanted him.
"Heron!" Kaelion urged. "Listen to Aethrion. You have to make the choice now!"
The pressure inside Heron's chest grew unbearable. The power was surging through him, filling every fiber of his being. It felt like it was tearing him apart, but at the same time, it was pulling him toward something—a goal, a destiny he couldn't see.
Suddenly—
He heard the voice again.
"You are my vessel… the chosen one. Only you can decide what happens next."
Heron closed his eyes, his hands gripping his chest as if trying to hold the power inside.
The creature below howled in frustration, its energy shaking the earth.
Heron's mind raced.
He didn't know if he could contain this power much longer.
He didn't know if he could stop what was coming.
But in that moment—
Heron made his choice.
His hands raised, glowing with power as the symbols across his body blazed brighter than ever before.
"I'll stop it," he whispered. "I'll seal it away."
The ground beneath him trembled violently as the power surged through him, a brilliant light erupting from his body. The energy flowed from his chest in waves, forming a glowing shield around him, and then—
He sent it downward.
Into the abyss.
The chains below pulsed with new energy as Heron's power lashed out, binding the creature once more, pushing it back into the darkness from which it had come.
The voice screamed in frustration as the power surged around it, sealing it once again.
But not completely.
Heron's body burned with exhaustion as the energy inside him flared.
"Heron…" Kaelion said softly, his voice filled with relief.
Heron collapsed to his knees, his strength drained.
"It's not enough," he whispered. "It's still trying to break free…"
The gods gathered around him, but the atmosphere was far from celebratory.
Aethrion placed a hand on Heron's shoulder.
"You did what you could," he said softly. "But the creature… it is more than any of us expected."
Heron looked up at the heavens, the weight of what he had just done heavy on his shoulders.
"I can feel it," he whispered. "It's still there. It's not gone."
Aethrion nodded solemnly.
"No. But the war has only just begun."
And with those words—
Heron realized that the true battle was still ahead.
