Chapter 20 - Echoes Of War

Echoes of War

Silence.

For the first time since the chaos began, the world was still.

The trembling earth had calmed.

The dark river had returned to a slow, unnatural flow.

The sky above remained dim, as if the heavens themselves were unsure whether peace had truly returned.

Heron stood at the center of it all.

Barely.

His body felt heavy, like every movement required more effort than it should. The glowing symbols that once burned across his skin had faded, but their presence remained—like scars etched beneath the surface.

He could still feel it.

Deep inside.

Watching.

Waiting.

Kaelion was the first to reach him.

"You're still standing," he said, letting out a breath. "That's… something."

Heron gave a faint, tired smile.

"Barely."

His legs trembled slightly, and Kaelion quickly steadied him.

"You pushed too far," Kaelion added.

Heron shook his head weakly. "Not far enough."

That answer—

Didn't sit well.

The others approached slowly.

Aethrion walked at the front, his presence as commanding as ever, though now there was something else behind his eyes.

Concern.

Real concern.

Thalor followed, his expression heavy, while Veyra's gaze lingered on the cracked ground around them, as if she could still feel the damage beneath.

Ignivar's flames had dimmed, though they flickered slightly with unease.

For a moment—

No one spoke.

Then Aethrion broke the silence.

"It is done."

Heron looked up at him.

"No," he said quietly. "It's not."

Aethrion didn't argue.

Because he knew.

The seal had held.

But only barely.

Thalor stepped forward, placing his hand on the fractured ground. His eyes closed briefly as he reached deeper, feeling the state of the earth itself.

When he opened them—

His expression was worse.

"It is weakened," he said.

Kaelion frowned. "How bad?"

Thalor hesitated.

"Bad enough," he finally replied, "that it will not hold forever."

Silence returned.

Heron lowered his gaze.

"I felt it," he said. "It wasn't just trying to break free… it was getting stronger."

Veyra looked at him sharply. "Stronger? That shouldn't be possible."

"It is," Heron replied. "It's feeding… on something."

The group fell quiet again.

Because deep down—

They already suspected the answer.

Aethrion turned his gaze toward Heron.

"…You."

Heron didn't deny it.

"I think…" he hesitated, then continued, "I think it's using me."

Kaelion's expression hardened. "Then we cut that connection."

"No," Thalor said immediately.

All eyes turned to him.

"If we sever that connection recklessly, we may break the seal entirely," he explained. "Heron is no longer just linked to it… he is part of what keeps it contained."

Heron's chest tightened.

"So if I lose control…"

No one answered.

They didn't need to.

Ignivar stepped forward, flames flickering stronger now.

"Then we don't let that happen," he said firmly.

Kaelion nodded. "Yeah. Simple."

Heron almost laughed.

Simple.

Nothing about this was simple.

Aethrion stepped closer.

"From this moment forward," he said, his voice calm but firm, "everything changes."

The air grew heavier.

"We are no longer dealing with a hidden threat," he continued. "This is war… whether it has fully begun or not."

Heron looked up.

"War…"

The word felt heavier than anything else.

Veyra turned slightly, her gaze distant. "The balance of the world has already shifted. Nature is reacting. The land knows what is coming."

Thalor nodded. "And the earth will not endure another breaking like this."

Kaelion crossed his arms. "So what's the plan?"

Aethrion didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Heron.

"You will train."

Heron blinked slightly. "Train?"

"You must learn to control this power," Aethrion said. "Not just suppress it. Not just survive it."

His voice deepened.

"But master it."

Heron frowned. "And if I can't?"

Aethrion's gaze didn't waver.

"You must."

That—

Was not a suggestion.

A faint wind passed through the broken land as Zephyros finally spoke.

"And while he trains… what do the rest of us do?"

Aethrion turned slightly.

"We prepare."

Ignivar's flames flared slightly. "For the demons?"

Aethrion's expression darkened.

"For everything."

That answer carried weight.

Because it wasn't just about the entity anymore.

Something else was coming.

Something they had not yet seen.

Heron felt it too.

Deep within his chest, the faint presence stirred again.

Not violently.

But quietly.

Like something waiting.

Then—

A whisper.

"They will come…"

Heron's eyes widened slightly.

"Did you hear that?" he asked.

Kaelion frowned. "Hear what?"

Heron hesitated.

"…Nothing."

But he knew.

That wasn't nothing.

Aethrion turned away, his gaze lifting toward the darkened sky.

"The world will not remain silent after this," he said. "Others will feel it. Others will come."

Thalor nodded slowly.

"They always do."

A cold wind swept across the land.

And for a moment—

The sky flickered.

Dark clouds shifted unnaturally, forming shapes that twisted and disappeared just as quickly.

Veyra looked up sharply.

"That's not natural…"

Ignivar narrowed his eyes. "Something's watching."

Heron felt it too.

That same cold presence.

Different from the one below.

This one—

Was above.

Then—

Far in the distance—

A deep, echoing roar shook the sky.

Not from below.

From beyond.

Everyone froze.

Kaelion looked toward the horizon.

"…Tell me that's not what I think it is."

No one answered.

Because they all knew.

The seal breaking—

Had awakened more than just one thing.

Aethrion's voice was quiet.

But heavy.

"It has begun."

Heron's chest tightened as he stared into the distance.

The war—

Was no longer coming.

It was here.
