Chapter 23 - Beyond The Veil

The silence that followed was deafening.

Heron stood motionless, staring at the spot where the figures had been just moments before. The field around them seemed untouched, peaceful even, yet everything had shifted. The presence that had surrounded them felt like it had pierced through the very fabric of reality.

They were gone.

The tension in the air, however, remained.

Heron's body ached as he stood tall again, his arms still trembling from the power he'd unleashed. He could feel it lingering in him, that burning force, waiting, always waiting.

But more than that…

The feeling inside him was different now.

He wasn't just carrying the power anymore.

It was calling to something.

Something ancient.

"We didn't get any answers," Kaelion said flatly, his voice breaking the stillness.

Heron glanced at him. "We got answers, Kaelion. Just not the ones we wanted."

Aethrion stepped forward, his gaze sharp as he studied the horizon. The gods had remained silent, but their presence was undeniable. They felt the weight of what was to come, even if they didn't know what exactly it would be.

"They came," Aethrion said quietly, "to confirm the inevitable."

Heron's chest tightened. "And what exactly is inevitable?"

Aethrion turned his gaze toward him, his face grim. "The breaking of the seal. The world's disturbance. It was not just a coincidence."

Heron shook his head. "But why come now? Why didn't they come sooner?"

Aethrion remained silent for a moment before speaking again, his voice carrying the weight of centuries.

"Because they were not meant to," he said. "They are from beyond the realms, from places that exist outside of the boundaries of time and space as we know it. Their arrival means the disturbances have been felt far and wide."

Heron blinked in confusion. "So, they're like… from other dimensions?"

Aethrion nodded. "Yes. They are not of this world, not of the mortal realm, nor the divine one. They have watched for eons, waiting for the balance to shift."

Kaelion frowned, crossing his arms. "So they've just been sitting back, watching us struggle, and now that we're in danger, they show up?"

Aethrion's eyes darkened. "They are not here to help us. They are here because the war that is brewing concerns them. They are neither ally nor enemy, but an ancient race that has always watched, waiting for the moment when the seal—the barrier between realms—breaks."

Heron felt a cold chill seep into his bones. The feeling inside him was growing more intense, more alive. It was as if the entity within him, the one bound beneath the earth, could sense the conversation—could feel the awakening of something far more ancient and powerful than he could comprehend.

"I still don't understand," Heron said, his voice strained. "If they're here to observe, then what is their role in all of this? Are we just pawns in a larger game?"

Aethrion stepped closer, his expression solemn. "You must understand, Heron. The creature beneath you, the one you sealed—its existence is tied to the very fabric of the realms themselves. The moment the seal was cracked, it reverberated through every layer of existence. It reached across dimensions, and now we face a war not only for the mortal realm but for every realm that exists."

Heron's mind raced as he tried to digest the magnitude of what Aethrion was saying.

"A war between the realms?"

"Exactly," Aethrion replied. "The breaking of the seal signals more than just the release of an ancient force. It's the first crack in the walls separating our world from others—worlds that have been hidden, unknown, and untouched for eons. The entities that occupy those worlds are now aware of the disturbance. And they will come."

The weight of Aethrion's words hung heavily in the air.

"So, what now?" Kaelion asked. "Do we just wait for them to come knocking?"

Aethrion's gaze darkened. "No. We prepare."

Heron looked at him, confusion still swirling in his mind. "Prepare for what?"

Aethrion's eyes softened. "You must train, Heron. There is no time left. The power inside you is only one part of the equation. The true battle is not just physical. It is mental. Spiritual. You must learn to master this power within you. To control it fully. Because if you do not…"

Heron felt the tension in the air thicken.

"…It will consume you," Aethrion finished.

Kaelion stepped forward. "And if he fails?"

Aethrion didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he turned and gazed across the horizon, where the sky seemed to grow darker with each passing moment. "Then the realms will fall. And the world will be at war, with no one left to stop it."

Heron stood silently, absorbing the weight of Aethrion's words. The truth was heavy—too heavy. He had already felt the strain of the power within him, how it surged when he couldn't control it, how it pushed back when he tried to stop it.

But now…

Now he understood the consequences of failure.

The worlds were beginning to fracture. The walls between realms were thinning, and what lay on the other side was far worse than he had ever imagined.

"We're running out of time," Kaelion said, breaking the silence. "If those scouts were just the beginning, then we've got bigger problems on our hands."

Aethrion nodded slowly. "Yes. The time for training is now. But be warned, Heron—what you are about to face will test you in ways you cannot yet imagine. The power inside you is not just a gift. It is a curse, a chain, and it will seek to break you."

Heron's heart pounded as the weight of his responsibility settled deeper within him. The creature below him, the ancient entity that had been sealed away, was only the beginning. There were others, other forces beyond his comprehension, waiting to cross into their world.

And he was the one holding the key.

"How do I even begin?" Heron asked, his voice quieter than before.

Aethrion's gaze softened, but there was no hesitation in his voice.

"We begin now."

Heron nodded slowly.

And as Aethrion gestured for them to follow, he couldn't shake the feeling that the true war—one far greater than he had ever imagined—was just beginning.

Far above, beyond the reaches of the mortal realm, the veil between worlds quivered.

And on the other side—

An ancient force stirred.
