Chapter 14 - Into The Depth

The ground didn't just crack.

It gave way completely.

One moment, Heron stood at the edge of the riverbank, the strange presence pulling at him like an invisible force. The next—

The earth beneath him collapsed.

Stone shattered.

Soil crumbled.

And the world above vanished in an instant.

Heron fell.

The sound of breaking earth echoed around him as he dropped into the darkness. Fragments of rock tumbled beside him, disappearing into the void below. The light from above faded quickly, shrinking into nothing as the gap sealed partially behind him.

"HERON!" Kaelion's voice rang out from above.

Faint.

Distant.

Then gone.

The fall continued.

But something felt… wrong.

This wasn't normal.

It wasn't just gravity pulling him down.

There was a force here.

Guiding him.

Pulling him deeper.

Heron tried to steady himself midair, his body twisting as he reached out instinctively, but there was nothing to grab—only darkness stretching endlessly around him.

His heart pounded.

His breath quickened.

But even through the fear—

That presence remained.

Closer now.

Stronger.

Watching.

Then—

Without warning—

Everything stopped.

Heron dropped the final distance and landed.

But not hard.

Not violently.

It was as if something had slowed his fall at the last moment.

Lowered him.

Placed him there.

He inhaled sharply, his body tense as he crouched slightly on impact. His hands pressed against the ground beneath him.

Cold.

Solid.

Ancient.

For a moment, he didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't even breathe fully.

Then slowly—

He looked up.

Darkness.

Endless and suffocating.

But not empty.

There was something here.

Something vast.

Something alive.

A faint glow flickered in the distance.

So dim it was almost invisible.

But it was there.

Pulsing.

Slow.

Steady.

Like a heartbeat.

Heron stood carefully, his movements cautious as his eyes adjusted to the darkness.

"Where… am I?" he whispered.

No answer.

But the silence felt… wrong.

It wasn't quiet.

Not truly.

There was a low sound beneath everything.

Barely audible.

Like something breathing.

Heron swallowed slightly.

Then took a step forward.

The ground beneath his feet was uneven, rough with ancient stone. Dust shifted with each movement, echoing faintly in the vast space around him.

Every step felt heavy.

Not physically—

But mentally.

Like the deeper he went, the harder it became to move.

Still—

He kept going.

The glow ahead grew stronger.

Not brighter.

But clearer.

More defined.

And with it—

The presence intensified.

It pressed against him now.

Surrounding him.

Watching him.

"It's you…" Heron muttered under his breath.

He didn't know how he knew.

But he did.

This was the source.

Above the surface—

The situation worsened.

Kaelion stood at the edge of the collapsed ground, his fists clenched tightly as he stared into the darkness below.

"Heron!" he called again.

Nothing answered.

Ignivar stepped forward, flames flickering more aggressively now. "He's too deep."

"No," Aethrion said immediately.

His voice was calm.

But firm.

Kaelion turned. "Then where is he?!"

Aethrion's gaze remained fixed on the crack.

"He wasn't just pulled down…" he said slowly.

"He was taken."

The words hung heavily in the air.

Zephyros hovered slightly above the ground, his expression tense. "I can't sense him properly anymore. Something is blocking everything."

Veyra knelt, placing her hand against the broken earth.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"The ground is… different," she said. "It's like it's resisting us."

Kaelion stepped forward again.

"Then we break through it."

Before he could move further—

Thalor raised his hand.

"Stop."

The single word carried weight.

Power.

Authority.

Kaelion froze.

His eyes locked onto Thalor.

"Then what do we do?" he demanded.

Thalor's gaze remained on the darkness below.

Unmoving.

Unshaken.

"You do nothing," he said.

Silence.

Kaelion's expression darkened. "We can't just leave him—"

"If you force your way in," Thalor interrupted, "you will not save him."

A pause.

"You will only accelerate what is already happening."

That—

Shut everything down.

Back below—

Heron continued forward.

The glow now illuminated the ground ahead.

And what he saw—

Made him stop.

The stone beneath his feet had changed.

No longer rough or broken.

Now it was smooth.

Carved.

Ancient.

Lines spread across the ground.

Patterns.

Symbols.

Heron frowned slightly as he stepped closer.

"What is this…?"

The markings were faint at first.

Barely visible.

But as he approached—

They began to react.

A soft glow spread through them.

Then—

They lit up.

Heron's eyes widened as the symbols pulsed with energy, spreading outward across the ground like a network of ancient power.

A deep sound echoed.

Louder now.

Stronger.

The same sound he had heard before.

He slowly stood.

His heart pounding.

"It's here…"

The darkness ahead shifted.

Not like wind.

Not like shadow.

But like something massive adjusting its position.

Heron froze.

Then—

Two faint glows appeared.

High in the darkness.

Far apart.

His breath caught.

Those weren't lights.

They were eyes.

The ground trembled beneath him.

The air grew heavier.

Harder to breathe.

And then—

The voice returned.

Clear.

Ancient.

Overwhelming.

"You have come… at last."

Heron's body tensed.

"You're the one…" he said slowly. "You've been calling me."

The eyes flickered.

The darkness behind them shifted slightly—but not enough to reveal the full form.

Only hints.

Only shadows.

"Bound… yet connected…" the voice echoed.

Heron frowned. "Connected how?"

No answer.

Instead—

The symbols beneath his feet began to glow brighter.

Faster.

More violently.

Above—

The gods felt it instantly.

Aethrion's expression changed.

"It's reacting."

Thalor's gaze sharpened.

"The seal…"

Cracks began to spread—not downward—

But outward.

Across the land.

Back below—

Heron stepped forward again.

The pressure hit instantly.

His body resisted.

His instincts screamed at him to stop.

But the pull—

Was stronger.

"Why did you bring me here?" he asked.

The voice answered.

Slower.

Heavier.

"Because… you are the key…"

Heron's eyes widened.

"The key to what?"

The eyes narrowed slightly.

Then—

The ground beneath Heron cracked.

Not collapsing—

But opening.

Revealing something beneath.

A deeper layer.

A brighter glow.

Different from before.

Stronger.

Heron looked down.

His breath caught.

Something was sealed there.

And it was reacting—

To him.
