Chapter 26 - Chapter 27: Not My Thoughts

It's thinking as you.

The words stayed in Noah's head, heavier than anything the voice had ever said. Because now, there was no voice to fight. No direction to resist. No presence to track.

Just thoughts.

Normal.

Smooth.

Natural.

And that was the problem.

Noah stood still, his breathing uneven again, eyes slightly unfocused as he stared ahead.

You're doing well.

The thought returned.

Clear.

Encouraging.

Wrong.

No," he whispered.

Kai stepped closer immediately. "What is it?

Noah swallowed. "It's not talking anymore.

Kunle nodded slightly. "We expected that."

"It's thinking," Noah added.

Kai's expression hardened. "Then don't trust anything that feels too easy."

That hit.

Because every thought right now—

Felt easy.

Another one formed.

You're in control.

Noah's chest tightened.

"I didn't think that," he said quickly.

Kunle watched him carefully. "Then where did it come from?"

Noah didn't answer.

Because he knew.

But he didn't want to say it.

Kai stepped closer. "Repeat it."

Noah hesitated.

Then—

"It said… I'm in control."

Silence.

Kunle exhaled quietly. "That's manipulation."

"It's not even hiding anymore," Kai said.

Noah clenched his fists. "No… it is hiding."

They both looked at him.

"It's just… better at it," he added.

Another thought.

Relax.

My breath slowed slightly.

Noah's eyes widened.

"No," he said under his breath.

Kai's voice came sharp. "Fight it."

"How do I fight a thought?" he snapped.

"…you don't have to fight…"

That one slipped in smoothly.

Too smoothly.

No distortion.

No warning.

Noah's chest tightened.

"That's not me," he said again.

Kunle nodded. "Then prove it."

"How?!"

"Contradict it," Kai said immediately.

Noah frowned. "What?"

"If it says relax—do the opposite," she said. "Force tension. Force awareness."

Noah didn't hesitate this time.

He tightened his fists.

Hard.

His breathing became uneven again.

Deliberately.

Messy.

Human.

The calm broke instantly.

Good.

That was good.

"You see?" Kai said. "Disrupt the pattern."

Another thought appeared.

That's unnecessary.

Noah's jaw tightened.

"I decide what's necessary," he said.

For a second—

There was resistance.

Subtle.

But real.

"…you're making it harder…"

The thought came again.

Noah's lips pressed together. "That's the point."

Kunle's gaze sharpened. "You're forcing it to expose itself."

"No," Noah said. "I'm forcing myself to notice it."

That mattered more.

Because if he couldn't tell—

Then nothing else mattered.

Another thought.

You're tired.

Noah's breath hitched.

That one again.

That pattern.

That's not new," he muttered.

Kai nodded. "It's reusing emotional triggers."

Noah clenched his jaw. "Then I ignore it."

you can't ignore yourself

That one hit differently.

Not louder.

Not stronger.

But deeper.

Noah froze slightly.

That

That almost sounded true.

And that was the danger.

"Don't accept anything immediately," Kai said.

"Question everything."

Everything.

Even myself.

My chest tightened.

Another thought formed.

What if this is you?

Noah's heart skipped.

That

That was worse.

Because he couldn't immediately reject it.

"What if it's right?" he said quietly.

Kai didn't hesitate. "It's not.

"How do you know?"

Because you're questioning it," she said. That means there's still a difference.

Kunle nodded slightly. "Doubt creates separation."

Noah swallowed.

Doubt.

Not certainty.

Not control.

Just… doubt.

Another thought.

They're wrong.

My chest tightened.

No, Noah said immediately.

That one was easy to reject.

Because it tried to isolate him.

And now

He recognized the pattern.

You're learning, Kunle said.

Noah nodded faintly. Yeah.

Another thought came

Softer this time.

Careful.

Then trust me.

Noah froze.

That one

That one was different.

Not forceful.

Not direct.

Quiet.

Patient.

Kai stepped forward instantly. Reject it.

Noah clenched his fists.

I don't trust you, he said firmly.

Silence.

Real silence.

No follow-up.

No correction.

No push.

That alone made his chest tighten.

Because before

It always responded.

Now

Nothing.

that worked," Noah said slowly.

Kunle nodded. "You denied alignment.

Kai added, "You refused the merge point.

Merge.

That word again.

Noah exhaled slowly.

I just need to keep doing that, he said.

No," Kai replied.

He frowned. "What?

You need to get faster."

My chest tightened.

Because it's getting better," she added.

Right.

Of course it was.

Another thought appeared.

You can't keep up.

Noah didn't hesitate this time.

Yes, I can.

Immediate rejection.

Clear.

Sharp.

For a second

There was space again.

Real space.

Between thoughts.

Between him

And it.

You see that?" Kunle said quietly.

Noah nodded. "Yeah.

That's your boundary.

Another thought tried to form

But it didn't settle.

It slipped.

Faded.

Like it couldn't fully attach.

you're resisting more

It came again.

But weaker.

Less certain.

Noah's chest rose slowly.

I'm choosing more," he corrected.

Silence.

Then

Nothing.

No new thoughts.

No interference.

Just… him.

Thinking.

Breathing.

Existing.

Separate.

For now.

Kai watched him closely. "You stabilized again.

Noah nodded faintly.

But it's still there," he said.

Yes," she replied.

Kunle added quietly, "It's just changing tactics."

Of course it was.

It always did.

Noah exhaled slowly.

Then I just keep changing too."

Silence followed.

But this time

It didn't feel empty.

It felt… watched.

Not from outside.

Not from the surface.

But somewhere deeper.

Quieter.

Waiting.

And Noah realized something as he stood there

This wasn't just a fight for control anymore.

It was a fight for identity.

Because if he couldn't tell which thoughts were his

Then eventually

It wouldn't matter if he won.

He wouldn't know who won.
