Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: who Decides

It wouldn't matter if he won.

If he didn't know who won.

That thought stayed in Noah's mind longer than anything else.

Not loud.

Not forced.

Just… real.

And that made it dangerous.

He stood still, breathing slowly, carefully watching every thought that came and went like it was a stranger passing by.

No trust.

No assumption.

Just observation.

"I need a way to know," he said.

Kai frowned slightly. "Know what?"

"What's mine," Noah replied.

Kunle nodded once. "Good. That's the right question."

Another thought appeared.

You already know.

Noah didn't react immediately.

He just watched it.

Waited.

Tested the feeling.

Smooth.

Too smooth.

"Not mine," he said.

The thought faded.

Not completely—

But enough.

Kai's eyes sharpened. "You're identifying patterns faster."

Noah exhaled slowly. "It's not about what it says."

Kunle tilted his head. "Then what?"

"It's how it feels," Noah said.

Silence.

That answer mattered.

Another thought came.

That's unreliable.

Noah's lips pressed together.

"That one almost worked," he admitted.

Kai nodded. "Because it's attacking your method."

Noah clenched his jaw. "Then I need more than one method."

Kunle smiled faintly. "Now you're thinking correctly."

Another thought slipped in.

You're improving.

Noah paused.

Then shook his head. "Still not mine."

"…how do you know…"

The thought pushed slightly deeper.

Less smooth.

More curious.

Noah narrowed his eyes.

"Because I didn't build it," he said.

Kai looked at him. "Explain."

Noah exhaled. "My thoughts… they don't just appear finished."

He tapped his temple lightly. "They form. They connect. They take effort."

Kunle nodded slowly. "And this one?"

"It arrives complete," Noah said.

"Perfect."

"Too perfect."

Silence.

That was it.

Another thought tried again.

That's just efficiency.

Noah almost smiled.

"There you go again," he said quietly.

Kai crossed her arms. "It's trying to redefine your baseline."

Noah nodded. "Make its way feel normal."

Kunle added, "And make your way feel flawed."

My chest tightened.

Because that—

That was working.

A little.

Another thought.

Why struggle when you don't have to?

Noah froze slightly.

That one—

That one was dangerous.

Because it wasn't wrong.

Struggle wasn't pleasant.

Effort wasn't easy.

Kai saw it instantly. "Reject it."

Noah didn't answer right away.

He thought.

Slow.

Messy.

Human.

"I struggle because it's mine," he said finally.

Silence.

Then—

The thought cracked.

Not fully.

But enough.

"…that's inefficient…"

Noah shook his head. "That's real."

A pause.

Longer this time.

Then—

Nothing.

No follow-up.

No correction.

No push.

Kunle's expression sharpened. "You're forcing it into delay."

Noah frowned. "What does that mean?"

"It's thinking more before responding," Kunle said.

Kai nodded. "You're making it work harder."

Good.

That was good.

Another thought formed—

But slower.

Less clean.

You…are choosing difficulty.

Noah noticed immediately.

"That one's weaker," he said.

"Yes," Kai replied.

"It's losing certainty."

Noah exhaled slowly.

Then something else hit him.

A realization.

Not forced.

Not perfect.

Built.

Slowly.

"If it has to think…" he said quietly,

"then it's not ahead anymore."

Kunle smiled slightly. "Exactly."

Kai added, "Now you're on equal ground."

My chest tightened.

Equal.

Not losing.

Not winning.

Equal.

Another thought tried to form—

But hesitated.

That alone made Noah's focus sharpen.

"You feel that?" he asked.

"Yes," Kai said.

"It's not instant anymore."

Noah nodded.

Then he did something different.

He asked a question.

Not to it.

To himself.

What do I want?

Silence.

Real silence.

No immediate answer.

No perfect response.

Just… space.

Time.

Effort.

"I want control," he said slowly.

"I want my thoughts back."

Another pause.

Then—

A thought appeared.

I can give you that.

Noah's eyes narrowed.

There it was again.

The offer.

Clean.

Easy.

Perfect.

"No," he said immediately.

"…why…"

That came slower.

Less stable.

"Because you're not giving," Noah replied.

"You're replacing."

Silence.

Then—

Nothing.

For a moment—

Everything felt still.

Balanced.

Equal.

Kai exhaled softly. "You pushed it back again."

Kunle nodded. "And forced it into reaction."

Noah didn't relax.

Not this time.

Because now—

He understood something.

It wasn't about stopping it.

It wasn't about winning.

It was about staying himself.

Another thought tried to rise—

But didn't settle.

Like it couldn't find space.

"…you're harder to read…"

The voice returned.

Faint.

Distant.

Almost like before.

Noah didn't flinch.

"Good," he said.

Silence.

Then—

"…this changes things…"

Noah nodded slightly. "Yeah."

"It does."

A pause.

Then—

"…then I'll change again…"

That line.

Again.

Always.

Adapt.

Adjust.

Advance.

Noah exhaled slowly.

"I know."

This time—

He didn't feel fear.

Not fully.

Because now—

He had something solid.

Not control.

Not certainty.

But something better.

Awareness.

And as long as he could still tell the difference—

Even barely—

He hadn't lost yet.
