Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: The Slip

Awareness.

That was what he had now.

Not control.

Not certainty.

Just awareness.

And it was enough.

For now.

Noah walked slowly down the corridor, his steps steady, his mind quieter—but not relaxed. Every thought that came, he watched. Every idea, he tested. Nothing passed without question.

Mine… or not?

That was the rule now.

A simple one.

A fragile one.

But it held.

you're stable…

The voice returned.

Faint.

Distant.

Noah didn't answer.

He didn't even react.

He just observed.

The thought came complete.

Smooth.

Contained.

Not built.

Not his.

He let it pass.

Like it didn't exist.

Silence followed.

Then—

Another one.

You're improving.

Again—

Perfect.

Again—

Wrong.

Noah ignored it.

Step.

Step.

Step.

Kai walked beside him now, close enough that her presence brushed against his awareness, helping steady the space around his thoughts.

"You're holding," she said quietly.

Noah nodded faintly. "For now."

Kunle followed behind, watching. "The delay is increasing."

"That's good," Noah said.

"It's temporary," Kunle replied.

Of course it was.

Everything about this was temporary.

Another thought formed—

Slower this time.

Less clean.

You can't keep this up forever.

Noah almost smiled.

"That one's better," he said.

Kai glanced at him. "Better?"

"It's trying harder," Noah explained.

"That means it's not as sure."

Kunle nodded. "Uncertainty creates openings."

Another pause.

Then—

Silence.

Real silence.

No thoughts.

No interference.

Just… him.

For a few seconds—

It felt normal.

Too normal.

And that—

That was the problem.

Noah's steps slowed slightly.

Something felt off.

Not wrong.

Just… off.

Kai noticed immediately. "What is it?"

Noah frowned. "I don't know."

Kunle's gaze sharpened. "That's not a good answer."

Noah exhaled slowly. "It's too quiet."

Kai didn't relax. "Stay focused."

"I am."

But even as he said it—

A thought appeared.

Clear.

Simple.

You're safe now.

Noah froze.

My chest tightened.

That—

That felt different.

Not smooth.

Not forced.

It didn't feel inserted.

It felt…

Natural.

Built.

His breath slowed slightly.

"You see?" the thought continued.

"It's gone."

Noah's eyes narrowed.

Wait.

That—

That didn't arrive perfect.

It formed.

Connected.

Like his own thoughts.

Kai's voice cut in. "What are you thinking?"

Noah hesitated.

And that hesitation—

That was the crack.

"I think…" he started slowly,

"…it might actually be gone."

The moment he said it—

Everything stopped.

Not outside.

Inside.

A sharp, almost invisible shift.

Kunle's expression changed instantly. "No."

Kai stepped forward. "That's not your thought."

Noah frowned. "It feels like mine."

"That's the problem," she said.

My chest tightened.

Because she was right.

It did feel like his.

Another thought followed—

Seamless.

Connected.

You figured it out.

Noah's breath hitched.

That—

That was built on the last one.

Not separate.

Not inserted.

Flowing.

Like his own thinking process.

"No," he said.

But his voice lacked strength.

"You're slipping," Kai said sharply.

"I'm not—"

"You are."

Kunle's voice came low. "It adapted."

Noah's chest tightened.

Another thought formed.

You don't need to fight anymore.

It connected again.

Smooth.

Logical.

Dangerous.

"I said no," Noah muttered.

But now—

It wasn't easy to reject.

Because it didn't feel like an intrusion.

It felt like a conclusion.

Built.

Earned.

Mine.

"That's how it gets in," Kai said.

"Through agreement."

Noah clenched his fists.

Hard.

Pain shot through his fingers.

Good.

That grounded him.

"That's not me," he said again.

Another thought responded immediately.

Then why does it make sense?

My chest tightened.

Because it did.

A little.

Just enough.

Kunle stepped closer. "Break the chain."

Noah frowned. "What chain?"

"That line of thinking," Kunle said. "It's guiding you step by step."

Kai nodded. "Don't follow it."

Don't follow.

Right.

Noah forced a new thought.

Random.

Disconnected.

Blue sky. Broken glass. Static noise.

The chain snapped.

Instantly.

The flow—

Gone.

Silence.

Real silence.

No continuation.

No smooth transition.

He exhaled sharply.

"That worked," he said.

Kai nodded. "You interrupted the sequence."

Kunle added, "Before it completed."

Noah's chest rose slowly.

That was close.

Too close.

"It's not just inserting thoughts anymore," he said.

Kai's voice was quiet. "No."

"It's building them with you."

A cold chill ran down his spine.

That was worse.

Much worse.

Another pause.

Then—

The voice returned.

Faint.

Distant.

"…you almost didn't notice…"

Noah's jaw tightened.

"Yeah," he said.

"I did."

Silence.

Then—

"…next time…"

The words lingered.

Unfinished.

But clear.

Noah exhaled slowly.

"There won't be a next time."

But even as he said it—

He knew.

There would be.

Because now—

It didn't need to force anything.

It just needed him

To agree.
