Chapter 30 - Chapter 30: Agreement

Because now—it didn't need to force anything.

It just needed him… to agree.

That realization stayed with Noah longer than anything else.

Not loud.

Not intrusive.

Just there.

And that alone made it dangerous.

He slowed his steps, his breathing steady but controlled, like every movement now required intention. The hallway noise faded into the background again—not because it was gone, but because he wasn't letting it in.

"Don't trust anything that feels natural," Kai said quietly.

Noah nodded. "Yeah… I figured that out."

Kunle walked beside them now, unusually silent.

That alone meant something.

Another thought appeared.

Careful this time.

Incomplete.

What if you're overthinking?

Noah stopped.

That one—

That one didn't feel perfect.

It felt… almost normal.

Like something he would actually think.

My chest tightened.

"That's new," he muttered.

Kai's eyes narrowed. "What is it?"

"It's not fully formed," Noah said. "It's… rough."

Kunle exhaled slowly. "It's adjusting its entry point."

Noah frowned. "Meaning?"

"It's no longer giving you complete thoughts," Kunle said. "It's letting you finish them."

A cold chill ran down Noah's spine.

Finish them.

So it didn't need to be perfect anymore.

It just needed to start it.

And he would do the rest.

Another thought followed.

You're overthinking… this is just—

Noah's breath hitched.

His mind instinctively tried to complete it.

Normal.

That's what it wanted to say.

That this was normal.

That nothing was wrong.

"No," he said immediately.

He cut it off.

Hard.

The thought collapsed before it finished forming.

Kai nodded slightly. "Good."

Kunle's gaze sharpened. "You interrupted construction."

Construction.

That word stuck.

Because that's what it was now.

Not insertion.

Not control.

Building.

With him.

Another thought tried again.

You don't need to—

Noah shut it down instantly.

"No."

Silence.

Then—

Another.

You can just—

"No."

Faster this time.

No hesitation.

No space.

Nothing to build on.

The thoughts stopped.

For a moment—

There was nothing.

No pressure.

No presence.

Just him.

Breathing.

Thinking.

Choosing.

"That's it," Kai said. "Don't let it finish."

Noah nodded.

But his chest was tighter now.

Because this—

This was harder.

Before, he just had to reject what was there.

Now—

He had to stop what wasn't even fully formed yet.

Another thought flickered.

Barely there.

Just a feeling.

A direction.

Rest.

Noah almost missed it.

Almost let it pass.

Almost let it grow.

His breath slowed—

Just slightly—

Then he caught it.

"No."

He forced tension again.

Clenched his fists.

Shifted his breathing.

Broke the calm.

The thought vanished.

Kai watched him closely. "You caught that one late."

"I know," Noah said.

"That's the problem."

Kunle nodded slightly. "It's getting subtler."

Of course it was.

It always did.

Another pause.

Then—

"…you're adapting…"

The voice returned.

Faint.

Distant.

But still there.

Noah didn't respond.

He just listened.

"…faster…"

Silence.

Then—

Nothing.

No follow-up.

No push.

"That's different," Noah said.

Kai nodded. "It's observing again."

Kunle added, "Waiting for a better opening."

My chest tightened.

Of course it was.

Another thought began—

Very soft.

Barely noticeable.

Just a direction again.

Let go—

Noah cut it instantly.

"No."

No hesitation.

No delay.

The thought didn't even form fully.

Gone before it existed.

Silence followed.

Then—

For the first time—

There was a reaction.

Not a thought.

Not a voice.

A feeling.

Subtle.

Sharp.

Like something had missed its step.

"You feel that?" Noah asked.

"Yes," Kai said.

Kunle nodded. "You disrupted it mid-process."

Noah exhaled slowly.

"That's new."

Another pause.

Then—

"…you're making this difficult…"

The voice returned.

Quieter now.

Less certain.

Noah almost smiled.

"Good," he said.

Silence.

Then—

"…then I'll simplify…"

My chest tightened.

Simplify?

What does that mean?

Kai's expression hardened. "Be careful."

Kunle didn't smile this time. "That's not good."

Another second passed.

Then—

A thought appeared.

Clear.

Sharp.

Single.

Stop.

No buildup.

No chain.

No softness.

Just one word.

Noah froze.

That—

That was different.

No complexity.

No manipulation.

Just… command.

My breath slowed slightly.

"Don't listen," Kai said immediately.

But it wasn't easy.

Because it didn't feel like persuasion.

It felt like instinct.

Like something deep.

Automatic.

Stop.

Noah's body almost obeyed.

His steps slowed—

His breathing softened—

Then—

He clenched his fists hard.

"No."

The word came out sharp.

Loud.

Breaking the moment.

The command shattered.

Gone.

His chest rose unevenly.

"That was different," he said.

Kai nodded. "It removed complexity."

Kunle added, "Direct influence."

Noah swallowed.

"That was close."

"Yes," Kai said.

"Too close."

Another pause.

Then—

The voice returned.

Faint.

Careful.

"…you resisted…"

Noah didn't answer.

"…impressive…"

Silence.

Then—

Nothing.

Again.

No follow-up.

No pressure.

No direction.

Just space.

But now—

That space didn't feel safe.

Because Noah understood something clearly.

It didn't need to convince him anymore.

It didn't need to trick him.

It just needed—

One moment.

One slip.

One agreement.

And slowly—

Piece by piece—

He would give it everything.

Noah exhaled slowly.

"I can't let anything through," he said quietly.

Kai nodded.

Kunle didn't speak.

Because they all knew—

That wasn't the hard part.

The hard part—

Was knowing when he already had.
