Chapter 38 - The edge of control

The world slowed.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

The roaring wind, the trembling metal, the distant hum of the city—all of it faded into a dull, distant echo in Han Seo-yeon's ears. The only thing that remained clear… was the machine in front of her.

Every movement it made.

Every shift of weight.

Every pulse of energy within its glowing core.

She could see it.

Not just with her eyes—but with something deeper.

"…So this is it," she whispered under her breath.

Behind her, Kang Ji-hoon stood frozen—not out of fear, but out of instinct. Something in her presence had changed again. It wasn't just strength or speed anymore.

It was… control.

Or at least—

The beginning of it.

"…Seo-yeon…" he called, his voice quieter now, cautious. "…What are you doing?"

She didn't turn.

Didn't blink.

"…Ending this," she replied.

The machine charged.

Massive.

Unstoppable.

Its steps cracked the already shattered helipad, each impact sending vibrations through the structure like thunder rolling beneath their feet.

But Seo-yeon didn't move.

Not yet.

Her breathing slowed.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

And then—

At the exact moment the machine's arm came crashing down—

She stepped forward.

Ji-hoon's eyes widened.

"…She walked into it?" he muttered.

But no—

She didn't.

She slipped past it.

Not fast.

Not forceful.

Just… perfectly timed.

The massive arm slammed into the ground behind her, missing by mere inches.

And Seo-yeon—

Was already inside its range.

"…What…?" Ji-hoon whispered.

He had seen speed.

He had seen precision.

But this—

This was something else.

Seo-yeon's hand lifted slowly.

Deliberately.

Her fingers brushed against the machine's armor.

And in that moment—

Everything connected.

She could feel it.

The vibrations.

The energy flow.

The way power surged from the core through its limbs, feeding every movement, every reaction.

"…I see it," she murmured.

Her eyes sharpened.

"…I finally see it."

The machine reacted instantly.

Its body twisted unnaturally, attempting to crush her at point-blank range.

But she moved again.

Fluid.

Effortless.

Untouchable.

She ducked, pivoted, stepped—each motion flowing into the next like water slipping through cracks.

Ji-hoon stared.

"…She's not reacting anymore," he realized.

"…She's predicting."

Seo-yeon struck.

Not hard.

Not fast.

Precise.

Her palm hit a small seam near the machine's core.

A faint crack.

Barely visible.

But real.

"…There!" she said sharply.

Ji-hoon snapped out of it instantly.

He moved.

The machine roared, its movements becoming erratic, more aggressive, as if it sensed the danger.

It swung wildly.

Too wildly.

Its precision—

Was breaking.

Seo-yeon continued.

Step.

Strike.

Dodge.

Strike again.

Each hit landed on the same area.

The same seam.

Again.

And again.

And again.

"…She's creating a weak point," Ji-hoon realized.

His eyes hardened.

"…Then I finish it."

He charged.

Every muscle in his body tensed.

Every ounce of strength focused into one moment.

One strike.

"Now!" Seo-yeon shouted.

Ji-hoon didn't hesitate.

His fist drove forward—

And connected directly with the fractured seam.

The impact echoed like thunder.

The machine froze.

The red core flickered violently.

Cracks spread across its armor like spiderwebs.

For a moment—

It worked.

But then—

The light surged.

Stronger than before.

Brighter.

Unstable.

"…No," Seo-yeon whispered.

"…It's not breaking."

Adrian's voice cut through the chaos.

"…Of course not," he said calmly. "…Did you really think it would be that easy?"

Seo-yeon's eyes snapped toward him.

"…What did you do?"

Adrian smiled faintly.

"…I removed its limiters."

The machine screamed.

Not mechanically.

Not artificially.

But something deeper.

Something… wrong.

Its body began to shift.

Expand.

The armor plates separated slightly, revealing more of the glowing core beneath.

The energy inside it surged violently, spilling outward in unstable waves.

Ji-hoon stepped back instinctively.

"…It's going to explode," he said.

Seo-yeon's breath caught.

"…No… it's evolving again."

The pressure in the air became unbearable.

Heavy.

Crushing.

Every instinct screamed danger.

"…Seo-yeon, we need to move," Ji-hoon said, grabbing her arm.

But she didn't move.

"…If it evolves again," she said quietly, "…we won't be able to stop it."

Ji-hoon's grip tightened.

"…Then we leave."

She shook her head.

"…No."

He stared at her.

"…What do you mean 'no'?"

Her eyes met his.

And there was something in them—

Calm.

Final.

"…I end it now," she said.

His expression hardened instantly.

"…You're not doing this alone."

"…I'm not," she replied softly. "…I'm trusting you."

That made him pause.

"…Then don't shut me out," he said.

She stepped closer.

Closer than before.

"…I won't," she said.

"…But you have to trust me too."

Silence.

The machine roared behind them, its energy building toward something catastrophic.

The helipad trembled violently.

Time was running out.

Ji-hoon looked at her.

Really looked at her.

At the fear she was hiding.

At the strength she had found.

At the woman who had risked everything—

Even him.

"…I do," he said finally.

She smiled faintly.

"…Then let's finish this."

They moved.

Together.

This time—

No hesitation.

No doubt.

No distance between them.

Seo-yeon led.

Her movements sharper than ever, her body moving with terrifying precision, slipping past the machine's increasingly unstable attacks.

Ji-hoon followed.

Matching her.

Trusting her.

"…Right side!" she called.

He moved instantly.

Strike.

Impact.

"…Core—lower section!"

He adjusted.

Hit again.

Their coordination—

Perfect.

The machine faltered.

Its movements breaking down under the pressure.

Its core flickering uncontrollably.

"…Just a little more!" Seo-yeon shouted.

But then—

Everything stopped.

The machine froze.

Completely.

"…What…?" Ji-hoon muttered.

The core glowed—

Brighter than ever.

Blinding.

Adrian's voice echoed.

"…It's too late."

Seo-yeon's eyes widened.

"…No…"

The energy inside the machine surged—

Violently.

Uncontrollably.

"…Ji-hoon," she whispered.

He grabbed her hand instantly.

"…We move. Now."

But the ground beneath them cracked—

Splitting wider.

The entire helipad began to collapse.

And the machine—

Was about to detonate.
