Chapter 43 - The signal that spreads

The silence didn't break gently.

It shattered.

A violent tremor ripped through the building, far stronger than anything before, sending shockwaves through the fractured floor beneath their feet. The walls groaned loudly, cracks racing across them like lightning, while chunks of concrete broke loose and crashed down around them.

Ji-hoon reacted instantly.

His hand shot out, pulling Seo-yeon closer to him before she could lose her balance.

"…Stay with me," he said, his voice low but firm, grounding.

Seo-yeon nodded faintly, though her breathing remained uneven. Her chest rose and fell too quickly, her mind still caught between what she had just experienced and the reality collapsing around her.

But one thing refused to fade.

That connection.

That vision.

That truth.

"…Ji-hoon…" she whispered, her voice fragile.

"…Yeah, I'm here," he replied immediately.

Her fingers tightened against his sleeve.

"…They're waking up."

The words didn't echo.

They sank.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Ji-hoon's jaw tightened as his eyes sharpened.

"…How many?" he asked.

Seo-yeon shook her head slowly.

"…I don't know," she admitted. "…But it wasn't just here. What I saw… it stretched farther than this city."

Her voice dropped.

"…Much farther."

Behind them, Adrian let out a slow breath.

Calm.

Controlled.

Almost pleased.

"…Of course it did," he said.

Ji-hoon's gaze snapped toward him instantly.

"…You knew," he said, his voice turning cold.

Adrian didn't deny it.

"…I suspected," he corrected.

Seo-yeon's eyes narrowed.

"…No," she said. "…You didn't just suspect. You triggered it."

Adrian's lips curved slightly.

"…Triggered," he repeated thoughtfully. "…Yes… that's a better word."

Another tremor shook the structure.

But this time—

It wasn't just the building.

A low hum began to spread through the air.

At first, it was barely noticeable.

Just a faint vibration.

But then—

It grew.

Seo-yeon stiffened instantly.

Her entire body reacted before her mind could catch up.

"…It's happening," she said.

Ji-hoon frowned.

"…What is?"

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"…They heard it."

The creature in front of them reacted violently.

Its body expanded outward, the red glow intensifying as unstable energy surged through it in rapid pulses. The surface of its form shifted uncontrollably now, flickering between solid and fluid, mechanical and organic.

It wasn't stable anymore.

It wasn't contained.

"…It's changing again," Ji-hoon muttered.

Seo-yeon shook her head.

"…No… it's responding."

Adrian stepped slightly to the side, observing with quiet fascination.

"…Yes," he said. "…This is what happens when the signal completes."

Ji-hoon clenched his fists.

"…What signal?"

Adrian finally looked at him fully.

"…The one you helped activate," he said.

That struck harder than expected.

Ji-hoon's expression darkened instantly.

"…Watch your words."

Adrian didn't react.

"…When she connected to it," he continued, nodding toward Seo-yeon, "…the resonance stabilized the frequency. That allowed it to broadcast."

Seo-yeon's breath caught.

"…Broadcast… to the others," she said.

Adrian nodded.

"…Exactly."

The weight of that realization settled heavily.

This wasn't an isolated event anymore.

It was a beginning.

Ji-hoon exhaled slowly, forcing himself to stay focused despite the rising tension.

"…Then we shut it down," he said.

Seo-yeon hesitated.

Just for a moment.

"…I don't think it's that simple," she said quietly.

He looked at her.

"…Explain."

She swallowed.

"…When I connected to it… I didn't just feel one presence," she said. "…I felt many. Scattered. Dormant."

Her voice trembled slightly.

"…But now… they're not dormant anymore."

Another tremor.

Stronger.

Deeper.

The ground beneath them cracked further, widening into jagged fractures that exposed the darkness below.

Ji-hoon's eyes scanned the environment quickly.

The structure was failing.

Fast.

"…We don't have time for this," he said. "…We move, regroup, and figure this out somewhere stable."

But Seo-yeon didn't move.

"…If we leave now…" she said slowly, "…we lose control completely."

He frowned.

"…We already don't have control."

She looked at him.

Her eyes clearer now.

More focused.

"…Then we take it back," she said.

Before he could respond—

The creature moved.

Violently.

Multiple tendrils shot out at once, faster than before, sharper, more precise. They cut through the air with terrifying speed, slamming into the ground, walls, and debris around them, tearing the environment apart.

Ji-hoon reacted instantly.

"…Move!"

He pulled Seo-yeon aside as one of the tendrils struck the ground where they had been standing, the impact cracking the concrete open.

They split apart.

Ji-hoon moved left, drawing its attention, his body shifting into motion with controlled precision.

Seo-yeon moved right, her mind racing.

"…It's targeting movement," she said quickly.

Ji-hoon dodged another strike.

"…Then stop moving?"

"…No," she replied immediately. "…It's predicting movement patterns."

That was worse.

Adrian's voice echoed calmly through the chaos.

"…It's learning from you in real time," he said.

Ji-hoon clenched his jaw.

"…Then we overwhelm it."

Seo-yeon shook her head.

"…No… that's exactly what it wants."

He paused mid-movement.

"…What?"

Her eyes sharpened.

"…The more we fight it directly… the more data it gathers."

Another strike.

Closer.

Faster.

She barely avoided it.

"…Then what do we do?" Ji-hoon demanded.

She hesitated.

"…We change the pattern," she said.

He frowned.

"…Explain faster."

"…It's reacting to us because we're predictable," she said. "…If I reconnect—"

"No."

The word came instantly.

Firm.

Absolute.

Ji-hoon stepped toward her despite the chaos.

"…You're not doing that again."

She met his gaze.

"…We don't have a better option."

"…We'll find one."

"…We don't have time," she replied.

The building shook again.

Pieces of the ceiling collapsing nearby.

"…Ji-hoon," she said softly.

His expression didn't change.

"…If I don't do this… it gets worse."

Silence.

He knew she was right.

He just didn't want her to be.

"…And if you lose control?" he asked quietly.

She didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"…Then you stop me."

His jaw tightened.

"…You're asking me to choose between you and whatever that thing is."

She shook her head.

"…No," she said.

"…I'm asking you to trust me."

The same words again.

He closed his eyes briefly.

Just for a second.

Then opened them.

"…One chance," he said.

Her lips curved faintly.

"…That's all I need."

She turned back to the creature.

The tendrils slowed.

As if it sensed her focus again.

The glow pulsed.

Waiting.

She stepped forward.

Ji-hoon stayed close this time.

Not stopping her.

But not letting her go alone.

Adrian watched in silence.

Interest burning in his eyes.

"…Yes…" he murmured.

"…Show me."

Seo-yeon raised her hand again.

Slower this time.

More controlled.

The air grew heavier.

The hum intensified.

And just before her fingers touched it—

She whispered,

"…Let's finish this."
