Chapter 44 - The line between control and collapse

The air tightened—not suddenly, not violently, but gradually, like an invisible force wrapping itself around the ruins, squeezing the space inch by inch until even breathing felt like an effort.

Kang Ji-hoon noticed it first in the silence.

Not the absence of sound—but the distortion of it.

The faint crackling of fire somewhere below, the distant crumble of falling debris, even Seo-yeon's uneven breathing beside him… all of it felt delayed, like it had to pass through something thick before reaching his ears.

He didn't like it.

Not one bit.

His gaze remained fixed on her.

Han Seo-yeon stood just ahead of him, her hand hovering inches away from the creature's shifting surface. The red glow pulsing beneath it reflected faintly across her skin, casting shadows that made her look almost… different.

Not physically.

But something about her presence had changed.

It was subtle.

But undeniable.

"…Seo-yeon."

His voice was low, controlled.

Grounding.

"If anything feels off, you stop. Immediately."

She didn't respond right away.

Her eyes were locked onto the creature, unblinking, as though she was listening to something he couldn't hear.

Which, at this point—

She probably was.

A slow breath escaped her lips.

"…It already feels off," she admitted quietly.

Ji-hoon's jaw tightened.

"Then don't do it."

Her fingers twitched slightly.

"…If I don't… it gets worse."

That answer came too easily.

Too certain.

And that's what worried him the most.

The building groaned above them, louder this time, a long, strained sound that echoed through the collapsing structure. A chunk of concrete broke loose from the ceiling and crashed somewhere behind them, sending a sharp crack through the air.

Time wasn't just running out.

It was collapsing along with everything else.

Ji-hoon exhaled slowly, forcing himself to stay calm.

To think.

To control the situation.

But the truth was—

This wasn't something he could control.

Not entirely.

"…What did you see?" he asked, his voice softer now.

That made her hesitate.

Her eyes flickered slightly, as if recalling something she wasn't sure she wanted to put into words.

"…It wasn't just one," she said.

He frowned.

"…The fragments?"

She nodded slowly.

"…They're connected," she said. "…Not physically… but something links them."

Her voice dropped further.

"…Like a network."

Behind them, Adrian shifted slightly.

Interested.

Ji-hoon caught it immediately.

"…You knew," he said without turning.

Adrian didn't deny it.

"…I suspected," he replied.

Ji-hoon let out a sharp breath.

"…You keep saying that like it makes it better."

Adrian's tone didn't change.

"…It makes it accurate."

Seo-yeon's focus returned to the creature.

"…It's not just a network," she continued. "…There's something at the center."

That made Ji-hoon still.

"…A center?"

Her fingers tightened slightly.

"…Something bigger," she said. "…Something… whole."

The word lingered.

Adrian's expression shifted.

Just slightly.

But enough.

"…Describe it," he said.

Ji-hoon shot him a glare.

"…You don't get to ask questions right now."

But Seo-yeon answered anyway.

"…I didn't see it clearly," she said. "…But I felt it."

Her breathing slowed.

"…It's aware."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Ji-hoon's chest tightened.

"…Everything here is aware."

She shook her head.

"…No… this is different."

Her voice dropped to almost nothing.

"…It noticed me."

That—

That changed everything.

Ji-hoon stepped closer, his hand instinctively finding her wrist again.

"…Then we're done here," he said. "…We leave."

She didn't move.

"…If we leave now," she said slowly, "…we lose our only chance to understand it."

"…And if you go deeper into that connection, you might not come back," he replied.

Silence stretched between them.

Her gaze softened slightly as she looked at him.

"…You really think I'd leave you behind like that?"

His answer came instantly.

"…I think you'd sacrifice yourself if you thought it was the only way."

That hit.

Harder than anything else.

She didn't deny it.

Instead, she gave a small, tired smile.

"…Then make sure I don't."

His grip tightened.

"…That's not a risk I want to take."

Another tremor shook the building.

Stronger.

Closer.

The creature pulsed violently again, its form expanding outward as the red glow surged through it in unstable waves.

It wasn't waiting anymore.

It was reaching a threshold.

Seo-yeon felt it instantly.

"…It's about to change again," she said.

Ji-hoon's eyes sharpened.

"…Then we end it before it does."

But even as he said it—

He knew.

It wasn't that simple.

"…No," she said quietly.

"…If we attack it now, it'll adapt faster."

"…Then what do you suggest?" he asked.

She hesitated.

Then—

"…I go deeper."

"No."

The word came out instantly.

Sharply.

Final.

She met his gaze.

"…Ji-hoon—"

"No," he repeated. "…We are not doing this again."

"…We don't have another option."

"…We'll find one."

"…We don't have time," she said.

The building answered that statement with another violent crack.

Dust fell.

More debris collapsed.

The structure was seconds away from giving in.

Ji-hoon closed his eyes briefly.

Just for a moment.

Then opened them.

"…One condition," he said.

She blinked.

"…What?"

His gaze locked onto hers.

Unwavering.

"…You don't go alone."

A pause.

Then—

A faint smile.

"…You really don't make things easy."

"…That's the point."

She turned back to the creature.

The glow pulsed.

Waiting.

The air grew heavier.

Thicker.

And this time—

Ji-hoon stepped forward with her.

Side by side.

Adrian watched silently.

His expression unreadable.

But his eyes—

Sharp.

Focused.

Calculating.

"…This is it," he murmured.

Seo-yeon raised her hand slowly.

More controlled this time.

More aware.

Ji-hoon stayed close enough to pull her back at any moment.

The distance closed.

The glow intensified.

The hum returned.

Louder.

Deeper.

And just before her fingers made contact—

She whispered,

"…If I lose control—"

"…You won't," he said.

She glanced at him briefly.

"…You don't know that."

His expression didn't change.

"…I know you."

A pause.

Then—

She touched it.

Everything broke.

Not just the connection.

Not just her perception.

Reality itself seemed to fracture.

The pulse exploded outward, stronger than before, slamming into Ji-hoon like a physical force. The ground beneath them cracked further, the building groaning violently as the energy surged.

"…Seo-yeon!"

But she was already gone.

Pulled deeper than before.

Far beyond where she had gone last time.

And this time—

Something was waiting.
