Chapter 37 - The hidden weapon awakens

The rumble beneath the helipad didn't stop.

It grew louder.

Deeper.

Heavier.

Like something enormous was waking up after a long, restless sleep.

Seo-yeon's breath caught as she instinctively stepped closer to Ji-hoon. The ground beneath her feet vibrated in uneven pulses, sending sharp tremors up her legs. The metal framework of the rooftop groaned in protest, bolts rattling, lights flickering erratically.

"…That's not just machinery," she said, her voice low, tense.

Ji-hoon's eyes narrowed as he scanned the surface beneath them, calculating, analyzing. "…No," he agreed. "…It's something bigger."

Across from them, Adrian stood with his hands casually in his pockets, as if none of this chaos concerned him.

"…You've both exceeded expectations," he said calmly. "…But you're still thinking too small."

Seo-yeon's gaze snapped to him. "…What did you do?"

Adrian's lips curved slightly. "…I prepared for failure."

Ji-hoon's expression darkened. "…Meaning?"

Adrian tilted his head toward the center of the helipad.

"…Meaning… if I couldn't break you," he said softly, "…I'd bury you."

The ground split.

Not slowly.

Violently.

A deafening crack tore through the helipad as reinforced steel plates snapped apart, splitting down the center. The force sent both Ji-hoon and Seo-yeon stumbling back, their footing shaken as debris scattered across the rooftop.

A deep, mechanical roar followed.

Not from above.

But from below.

"…Move!" Ji-hoon barked, grabbing Seo-yeon's wrist and pulling her back just as a massive metallic structure burst upward through the fractured surface.

The explosion of debris sent shards of concrete and steel flying in all directions.

Seo-yeon raised her arm instinctively to shield her face.

When the dust began to settle—

They saw it.

And for the first time that night—

Even Ji-hoon hesitated.

It was massive.

Easily three times the size of the largest drone they had faced.

Its body was built from layered armor plating, dark and reinforced, with glowing red cores pulsing beneath its chest and joints. Thick mechanical limbs anchored it to the broken helipad, each movement causing the ground to groan under its weight.

Its head tilted slightly.

Scanning.

Calculating.

Alive.

"…What the hell is that?" Ji-hoon muttered under his breath.

Adrian's voice answered from behind them.

"…My final prototype."

Seo-yeon's heart pounded violently.

"…That's not a prototype," she whispered.

"…You're right," Adrian said. "…It's evolution."

The machine moved.

Fast.

Far too fast for its size.

One massive arm swung toward them with crushing force.

Ji-hoon reacted instantly, pulling Seo-yeon back as the impact shattered what remained of the helipad surface where they had stood just moments before.

The sound was explosive.

Concrete cracked.

Metal screamed.

"…It's stronger than anything before," Ji-hoon said, his voice tight.

Seo-yeon nodded, her eyes locked onto the machine as it adjusted its stance.

"…And faster," she added.

The machine lunged again.

This time—

Seo-yeon moved first.

She dashed forward, her body flowing into motion with sharp precision, dodging the incoming strike by inches. She planted her foot against a broken slab of concrete and launched herself upward, aiming a precise kick toward the machine's neck joint.

Her strike landed.

Hard.

But—

Nothing.

The impact barely registered.

She flipped backward, landing beside Ji-hoon, her expression tightening.

"…No weak point?" she muttered.

Ji-hoon's eyes scanned rapidly.

"…There has to be," he said. "…Everything has one."

Adrian watched from a distance, completely relaxed.

"…You're thinking too simply again," he called out. "…It doesn't have one."

Seo-yeon's gaze snapped toward him.

"…That's impossible."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"…It's not designed to fail."

The machine roared again and charged.

This time, both of them moved.

Ji-hoon intercepted the left side, drawing its attention with a powerful strike against its arm. The impact echoed, sending vibrations up his entire body.

"…It's like hitting a wall," he muttered.

Seo-yeon used the opening, slipping behind it, her movements faster now, sharper, more precise. She leaped onto its back, gripping onto a seam in the armor and striking repeatedly at the glowing core beneath.

"Break!" she muttered through clenched teeth.

But the armor didn't give.

Not even slightly.

The machine reacted instantly.

Its arm twisted unnaturally, grabbing toward its own back.

"…Seo-yeon!" Ji-hoon shouted.

She let go just in time, flipping backward as the machine's massive hand slammed into its own frame, sending shockwaves through the structure.

She landed hard, sliding across the ground.

"…It adapts," she said, breathing heavier now.

Ji-hoon nodded. "…Then we adapt faster."

They exchanged a look.

No words needed.

Then—

They moved again.

This time, their coordination sharpened.

Ji-hoon attacked head-on, drawing its full attention, his strikes timed and calculated to provoke reactions. Seo-yeon circled, observing, analyzing every movement, every shift, every mechanical response.

"…It reacts to pressure," she said quickly.

"…Meaning?" Ji-hoon asked, dodging a heavy strike.

"…Meaning it prioritizes threats," she replied.

His eyes narrowed.

"…So we overload it."

Her lips tightened.

"…Exactly."

They switched instantly.

Seo-yeon moved into direct range, unleashing a rapid series of precise strikes, each one targeting joints, seams, weak-looking intersections.

The machine turned toward her.

Just as planned.

Ji-hoon moved behind it.

"…Now," she said.

He didn't hesitate.

With everything he had—

He struck.

The impact landed squarely against the glowing core at its back.

For a split second—

The machine froze.

The red light flickered.

"…It worked!" Seo-yeon shouted.

But then—

The light surged.

Brighter.

Stronger.

And the machine moved again.

Faster than before.

"…It's evolving," Ji-hoon realized.

Adrian's voice echoed faintly.

"…Of course it is."

The machine attacked again—more aggressive, more precise, its movements sharper, almost… intelligent.

Seo-yeon barely dodged a strike that shattered the ground beside her.

"…This isn't just programming anymore," she said.

Ji-hoon's expression darkened.

"…No. It's learning."

The pressure increased.

Every movement demanded more from them.

More speed.

More strength.

More focus.

Seo-yeon's breathing grew heavier.

Ji-hoon's movements slowed—just slightly.

And the machine noticed.

It targeted him.

"Ji-hoon!"

Seo-yeon moved instantly, intercepting the incoming strike, but the force was too much.

It sent both of them crashing back.

Hard.

Pain shot through her body.

Her vision blurred for a second.

Ji-hoon pushed himself up, breathing hard.

"…We can't keep this up," he said.

Seo-yeon steadied herself beside him.

Her eyes—

Changed.

Focused.

Clear.

That same clarity from before.

But stronger.

"…Then we end it," she said.

Ji-hoon glanced at her.

"…How?"

She looked at the machine.

Then at him.

"…Trust me."

He hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then—

He nodded.

"…Always."

She stepped forward.

Alone.

Adrian's eyes lit up slightly.

"…Ah… finally," he murmured.

The machine charged.

But this time—

Seo-yeon didn't dodge.

She stood her ground.

Her breathing slowed.

Her body stilled.

Her eyes—

Locked.

And then—

She moved.
