Chapter 22 - The known Place

While Daniel and Mary were facing their mission…

David and Noah had already reached theirs.

They were walking down a long road toward the city.

David suddenly spoke in a strange tone,

"Wow… Daniel and Mary in one team…"

Noah glanced at him.

Then both of them started laughing.

Noah shook his head.

"Stop this nonsense. Focus."

David smirked.

"Fine, fine."

As they entered the city, David slowed down.

"…I've seen this place before."

Noah looked around.

"You've been here?"

David nodded slowly.

"This… is my city."

His expression changed slightly.

Something felt off.

Too quiet.

Too empty.

They reached David's house.

Before entering, Noah stepped forward.

"I'm Noah Roberts, I—"

David quickly pulled him aside.

"Are you crazy?" he whispered.

"Don't tell them everything."

"Just say we're students from another city."

Noah nodded.

"…Got it."

They went inside.

David's mother welcomed them warmly.

After some food and rest, she sat down seriously.

"David," she said,

"You know about our family tradition."

He nodded slightly.

"Every fifteen years… our family transfers a special power to the next successor."

David looked up.

"…When is it?"

"Day after tomorrow."

Silence.

David processed it.

Then he looked at Noah later and said quietly,

"We only have until tomorrow to finish the mission."

Noah raised an eyebrow.

"Why?"

David explained everything.

Noah smiled slightly.

"Then it's obvious. You'll get it. You're the strongest."

David quickly said,

"Lower your voice, idiot."

The Investigation

They went out again.

House to house.

Street to street.

Asking questions.

Searching for clues.

But—

Nothing.

No signs of struggle.

No evidence of deaths.

It was like—

Nothing had ever happened.

David frowned.

"This doesn't make sense."

Then they found something.

Bodies.

Days later.

In random places.

Near trees.

Near rivers.

In the forest.

As if—

People just disappeared… and reappeared dead.

Noah shook his head.

"This is not normal."

As night approached, David spoke,

"We let it come to us."

No smirked slightly.

"Good plan."

They stayed out at night.

Waiting.

Watching.

The attack

Then—

It came.

A sudden attack from the darkness.

But both of them reacted instantly.

They dodged.

Moved.

Focused.

"So… you're the ones," a voice echoed.

"You'll die tonight."

The ghost attacked again.

Faster.

Stronger.

David used his energy and launched an attack—

But the ghost dodged.

His attack hit the ground instead.

"…What?" David muttered.

Something was wrong.

"David—!" Noah warned.

Too late.

The ghost struck.

Noah was hit and thrown back.

He fell hard.

Injured.

But still conscious.

David clenched his fists.

"Noah!"

He charged forward.

Even though he was tired.

Even though he was injured.

He kept fighting.

The ghost overpowered him again and again.

But David didn't stop.

Not this time.

Not in his own city.

With one final push—

He gathered all his strength.

And attacked.

This time—

It worked.

The ghost staggered.

Weakened.

David didn't hesitate.

He struck again—

And finished it.

Silence.

David stood there, breathing heavily.

Then quickly ran to Noah.

"You okay?"

Noah laughed weakly.

"…Still alive."

Both of them were badly injured.

They could barely stand.

But somehow—

They made their way back home.

As soon as they entered, David's mother rushed to them.

"What happened?!"

"Why are you both injured?!"

David quickly said,

"Nothing serious… just some stray dogs chased us."

Noah, even in pain—

Started laughing.

David glared at him.

"Shut up."

Morning came.

The day of the trial.

The day that would decide everything.

David stood silently.

Thinking.

Will I survive…?

Or… will everything change?

The answer—

Was waiting.
