Chapter 22 - Chapter 22 – The Place Where It Began

The drive was silent.

Luna sat beside Ethan, her fingers tightly clenched in her lap. The city lights slowly faded behind them, replaced by long stretches of empty road. The further they went, the quieter everything became.

Too quiet.

Her thoughts grew louder in that silence.

Her heartbeat too.

"This is where it happened?" she asked quietly, her voice almost hesitant.

Ethan nodded once, eyes still on the road. "Yes."

That one word made her chest tighten.

The car slowed… then stopped.

For a moment, Luna didn't move.

Her hand rested on the door handle, but she didn't

open it immediately. Something about this place—before even stepping out—felt familiar.

Unsettlingly familiar.

Then she pushed the door open.

The air hit her instantly.

Heavy. Still. Almost suffocating.

She stepped out slowly, her eyes scanning the

empty road. There was nothing special about it—just a quiet stretch of asphalt under dim lights.

But her body reacted differently.

"I've been here…" she whispered.

Not as a guess.

As a fact.

Ethan stepped out too, watching her carefully.

"Don't force it."

But it was already happening.

Luna took a step forward.

Then another.

Her heartbeat started racing uncontrollably.

The air felt thicker.

Harder to breathe.

And suddenly—

Pain hit.

Sharp. Sudden.

"Aah—!" she gasped, grabbing her head tightly.

"Luna!" Ethan rushed toward her, reaching out—but she could barely hear him anymore.

The world around her blurred.

And the past—

Took over.

Rain poured down.

Cold. Heavy.

Darkness swallowed everything except—

Blinding headlights cutting through the night.

"I'm running…" she whispered, her voice trembling as if she was there again.

Ethan's expression turned serious, focused. "What do you see?"

"I'm holding something…"

Her hands trembled unconsciously, fingers

tightening as if gripping an invisible object.

"A drive…"

Ethan's jaw tightened slightly.

Another flash hit.

Adrian.

Right beside her.

Grabbing her wrist. Pulling her forward.

"Don't stop!"

Her breathing became uneven.

"He was helping me…"

Ethan didn't interrupt.

Didn't react.

He just watched.

Carefully.

More memories flooded in.

Footsteps behind them.

Men chasing.

Voices shouting.

"Get the drive!"

"I was running from them… not with them…" Luna said quickly, almost desperately, like she needed to prove it.

Relief flickered in Ethan's eyes.

But it didn't last.

Because Luna suddenly froze.

Her entire body went still.

A new memory surfaced.

Stronger.

Clearer.

Her own voice.

Panicked. Urgent.

"I can't let Ethan find it."

Everything stopped.

"…No…" Luna stepped back, shaking her head.

"That's wrong… that doesn't make sense…"

Ethan didn't move.

Didn't speak.

He just watched her.

"Why would I say that?" her voice cracked,

confusion and fear mixing together.

Silence.

Luna slowly turned toward him.

"Was I hiding it… from you?"

Ethan's eyes darkened slightly. "…I don't know."

But this time—

His answer felt different.

Distant.

Careful.

And Luna noticed.

Her chest tightened painfully. "You're still not telling me everything."

"I've told you what I know."

"That's not true."

Her voice didn't rise.

But it was firm.

Stronger now.

Her eyes searched his face, trying to find

something—anything—that felt real.

"Back then… I trusted you enough to hide.something from you," she said slowly. "That means something happened between us."

Ethan didn't respond.

Because he couldn't deny that.

"Were we enemies?" she asked.

"No."

"Then what were we?"

Silence stretched.

Long.

Heavy.

Then Ethan finally spoke. His voice quieter this time.

"…We were on the same side."

Luna frowned slightly.

"Then why would I hide it from you?"

That question stayed between them.

Unanswered.

Even Ethan didn't have a clear answer.

And that uncertainty—

Changed everything.

Luna looked away, her mind spinning again, trying to connect pieces that didn't fit.

"This isn't just about the drive, is it?" she said quietly.

"No."

Her lips parted slightly.

"…It's about me."

Ethan didn't deny it.

Didn't correct her.

A weak laugh escaped her.

"Great… I'm the mystery now."

She stepped back, putting distance between them.

Not because she wanted to leave—

But because she didn't know where she stood anymore.

"I don't even know which part of me is real anymore," she said softly.

Ethan took a small step forward. "Luna—"

"No," she interrupted, her voice quiet but firm.

"Don't."

He stopped.

"If I was hiding things from you…" she continued, her gaze lowering, "…then I don't even know if I can trust myself."

Her voice dropped further.

"…or you."

That line hit harder than anything before.

Ethan's expression tightened slightly. "I'm not your enemy."

"I don't know that anymore."

Silence.

The distance between them grew.

Not physical—

But something deeper.

Something harder to fix.

Luna looked around the empty road again.

This place—

It held her past.

Her truth.

And now—

Her doubt.

"…I need more time," she said quietly.

Ethan didn't argue.

Didn't stop her.

Because for the first time—

He realized something.

He might lose her.

Not because of danger.

Not because of enemies.

But because of the truth.
