Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 – The Choice

The silence after Adrian left didn't fade.

It lingered—heavy, suffocating, pressing against Luna's chest like something she couldn't escape.

She stood still, his words echoing again and again in her mind—

"You chose this."

Her fingers curled slightly as if trying to hold onto something solid. "…Did I?" she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Ethan looked at her, his gaze sharp but controlled.

"Don't let him get into your head."

"But what if he's already there?"

That question stayed between them.

Unanswered.

Uncomfortable.

Ethan didn't reply immediately, and that silence made something inside Luna shift. It wasn't just doubt anymore—it was fear mixed with curiosity.

She took a slow step back, creating distance

between them. "You think I hid that drive… don't you?"

Ethan's jaw tightened slightly. He didn't answer right away.

"…I think you were trying to protect something," he said finally.

"Or someone," she added quietly.

Silence followed.

The kind that said more than words ever could.

Her chest tightened. "And if that someone was him?"

Ethan's expression hardened instantly. "It wasn't."

"You don't know that."

"I know enough."

"That's not enough for me."

Her voice didn't rise, but it carried weight—real frustration, real fear.

She turned away, running a hand through her hair, her thoughts spiraling faster than she could control. "I need to remember."

"No."

The response came immediately.

Firm.

Final.

She looked back at him, her eyes searching his face. "I don't have a choice."

"You do," Ethan said, stepping closer. "Forcing it could break you."

A bitter smile touched her lips. "Maybe I'm already broken."

That line hit harder than anything else.

Ethan stopped.

For a moment, he didn't know what to say.

Because part of him feared—

She might be right.

He took another step toward her. "Luna…"

But she shook her head before he could continue.

"If I don't remember, I'll keep doubting everything," she said quietly. "You. Myself. This."

Her voice softened, almost fragile now. "…I can't live like that."

That honesty—

Raw and unfiltered—

Made something in Ethan's chest tighten.

Silence fell again.

Longer this time.

He looked away briefly, thinking, calculating, weighing the risks.

Because this wasn't just about helping her.

This was about what would happen after she remembered.

Then he exhaled slowly.

"…There might be a way."

Luna's eyes lifted instantly, a flicker of hope and fear mixing together. "What way?"

"A memory trigger," he said. "Something connected to that night."

Her heartbeat picked up. "Like what?"

Ethan hesitated.

Because saying it out loud made it real.

"…The place."

Her breath hitched.

"The accident site?"

"Yes."

Fear crept into her chest immediately, wrapping around her like a cold grip.

Images flashed in her mind—rain pouring down, headlights blinding her vision, the sound of

something rushing too fast.

"But if I go there…"

"You might remember everything."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Decisive.

Luna's hands trembled slightly, but she didn't step back.

Instead, she closed her eyes for a second, trying to steady herself.

Her past wasn't just waiting—

It was pulling her back.

And she could feel it now.

Every fragment, every broken memory, every

unanswered question—

They all led to that one night.

If she wanted the truth…

That was where it began.

She opened her eyes again.

The fear was still there.

But something else had taken its place too.

Determination.

"…Take me there."

Ethan didn't move.

Because this—

Was the point of no return.

Once she stepped into that place…

There would be no more half-truths.

No more protection.

Only reality.

"Are you sure?" he asked quietly.

Luna nodded.

Even though her hands were still shaking.

"I need the truth," she said.

Her voice wasn't loud.

But it was firm.

Unshakable.

Ethan studied her face carefully.

He saw everything—

The fear she was trying to hide.

The confusion that hadn't faded.

And the courage she didn't even realize she had.

For a moment, he almost said no.

Almost stopped her.

Because deep down—

He knew something she didn't.

The truth she was chasing…

Would change everything.

Maybe even destroy what little peace she had left.

But he also knew—

Stopping her now wouldn't save her.

It would only delay the inevitable.

"…Alright," he said finally.

"But whatever happens—"

"I'll face it," she cut in before he could finish.

That made him pause.

Because this time—

There was no hesitation in her voice.

Only resolve.

For the first time since everything started—

Luna wasn't running.

She wasn't confused.

She wasn't hiding.

She was choosing.

Choosing to face her past.

Choosing to face the truth.

Even if it broke her.

Ethan stepped closer, his voice quieter now. "…

Stay close to me when we get there."

Luna looked at him.

There was something different in his tone.

Not control.

Not authority.

Something softer.

Something real.

"…I will," she said softly.

And for a brief moment—

The tension between them eased.

Not completely.

But enough.

Because despite everything—

They were still on the same side.

For now.

But both of them knew the truth.

Once her memories fully returned…

Nothing would stay the same.

And this—

This choice she just made—

Might be the one that breaks everything.
