Chapter 24 - Chapter 24 – Too Close to Deny

The silence between them didn't break.

Not after the truth.

Not after the doubt.

It stayed—heavy, stretching between them like something neither of them knew how to fix.

Luna turned away first.

"I need to think."

Ethan didn't stop her.

Didn't reach out.

Didn't say anything.

And somehow—

That hurt more than if he had.

She walked a few steps ahead, her pace slow, uncertain. The road felt colder now. Empty in a way it hadn't before.

Too much space.

Too much distance.

"Why didn't you stop me?" she asked suddenly, her voice quiet but clear.

Ethan frowned slightly. "What?"

"Before… when I said I might not trust you."

She still didn't turn around.

"But you didn't even try to argue."

Silence followed.

Then—

"Because I don't want to force you to trust me."

That answer hit deeper than she expected.

Luna slowly turned back to face him.

"Or maybe…" she said, her eyes searching his, "…you're not sure if you deserve it."

Ethan's gaze darkened slightly.

"…Maybe."

That honesty—

Was dangerous.

Because now she didn't know what to feel.

Anger?

Understanding?

Something in between?

"You're hiding something," she said.

"I told you—"

"No," she cut in. "Not about the drive. About us."

That made him pause.

For real this time.

Luna stepped closer, closing the gap between them.

"Back then… what were we really?"

Ethan held her gaze.

For a moment—

He almost said it.

The truth sat right there.

Ready.

But then—

"It doesn't matter now."

Her expression changed instantly.

"It matters to me."

"It shouldn't."

"Why?"

"Because it won't change anything."

"That's not true!"

Her voice broke slightly.

And that—

Was new.

Because this wasn't just curiosity anymore.

This was personal.

Real.

"Maybe it will change everything," she whispered.

Ethan stepped closer.

Too close.

"Or maybe," he said quietly,

"…it'll make things worse."

Her breath hitched.

"Worse than this?" she asked softly.

Silence.

They were standing too close now.

Close enough to feel each other's breath.

Close enough to notice every small detail—

Her heartbeat.

His hesitation.

The tension neither of them could ignore anymore.

"Tell me the truth," Luna whispered.

Ethan looked at her.

Long.

Steady.

Then—

His hand lifted.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Almost like he was giving himself time to stop.

But he didn't.

His fingers brushed softly against her cheek.

Luna froze.

"If I tell you…" he said quietly, his voice softer than before,

"…you won't be able to pretend this is just a contract anymore."

Her breath stopped.

The world around them faded.

Everything narrowed down to this moment.

This choice.

"Then don't let me pretend," she whispered.

That was it.

The line-

Was crossed.

For a second—

Neither of them moved.

Then Ethan pulled her slightly closer.

And Luna didn't resist.

Because now—

It wasn't about the contract.

Not about the past.

Not even about the truth.

It was about what they were feeling.

Right now.

And that—

Was far more dangerous than anything else.

The space between them disappeared.

The tension shifted.

Deepened.

Turned into something neither of them could ignore anymore.

But just as the moment reached its peak—

Ethan's phone vibrated.

Sharp.

Sudden.

Breaking everything.

Reality rushed back instantly.

He stepped away.

The distance returned.

Cold.

Immediate.

Luna looked at him, her expression unreadable now.

The softness in her eyes faded.

"…Right," she said quietly.

"Contract."

That one word—

Felt heavier than ever before.

Because now—

Neither of them believed in it anymore.
