Chapter 23 - Chapter 23 – The Truth She Buried

Luna didn't move.

The road stretched endlessly in front of her, silent and empty—but her mind was anything but.

Everything felt too real now.

Too close.

Too heavy.

"I hid it from you…" she whispered, her eyes fixed somewhere far beyond the present.

Ethan watched her carefully, every small reaction, every shift in her expression. "We don't know that for sure."

"Yes, we do," she said immediately. Her voice wasn't loud—but it carried certainty. "I heard it. My own voice."

Her chest tightened painfully.

"Why would I hide something from you… if we were on the same side?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Because he didn't have one.

And for the first time—

That uncertainty showed.

Luna slowly closed her eyes.

Another wave came.

Stronger this time.

Clearer.

More real.

Rain poured heavily around her. Cold drops hitting her skin, soaking through everything. Her hands trembled as she clutched something tightly.

A small black drive.

Important.

Dangerous.

Adrian stood in front of her. Closer than before. His hand stretched toward her.

"Give it to me," he said.

Firm.

Controlled.

Her own voice followed—

Sharp.

Certain.

"No."

Luna's eyes snapped open.

"He asked me for it…"

Ethan's expression sharpened instantly. "Adrian?"

She nodded slowly, still trying to process it. "He wasn't helping me…"

Her voice dropped, almost like she didn't want to admit it.

"…He was trying to take it."

Silence fell between them.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

"I didn't trust him…" she whispered.

Ethan's jaw tightened slightly.

"That means—"

"I trusted you," she finished.

That changed everything.

For a moment—

Neither of them spoke.

Because that one truth shifted the entire balance.

But it didn't last.

Another memory surfaced.

Deeper.

Darker.

Her own voice again.

This time quieter.

More desperate.

"If something happens to me… don't let Ethan find it."

Everything stopped.

Luna's breath hitched violently.

"…No…"

Her body trembled as she stepped back, shaking her head. "That doesn't make sense…"

Ethan went completely still.

Because now—

Nothing made sense.

Luna's voice broke.

"I trusted you… but I was hiding it from you…"

Her eyes filled with confusion, fear, frustration.

"What does that even mean?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Because even he didn't know which version of the truth was real anymore.

Luna pressed her hand to her head again, trying to steady herself.

"It feels like… I was protecting something…"

"Or someone," Ethan said quietly.

She looked at him slowly.

"…From you?"

Silence.

That question changed everything again.

Ethan's voice dropped slightly. "…I don't know."

But this time—

It didn't sound like control.

It sounded like doubt.

Luna let out a weak, almost broken laugh. "So basically… no one knows anything."

"That's not true," Ethan said.

She looked at him, her expression tired but searching. "What do we know then?"

Ethan held her gaze.

"…That whatever is in that drive… is important enough for people to chase you for ten years."

Her heartbeat picked up again.

"And important enough…" he continued,

"…for you to forget it on purpose."

Silence followed.

That truth—

Was heavier than anything else.

Luna slowly looked down at her empty hands.

"I made myself forget…"

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"If I did that…" she swallowed, "…then I must've been really scared."

Ethan stepped closer.

"…Or really determined."

She looked at him again.

"…And now?"

A pause.

The air between them felt different now.

More real.

More dangerous.

"Now," Ethan said quietly,

"…we find it."

Luna didn't respond immediately.

Because for the first time—

She wasn't sure.

Was finding the truth….

Really the right choice?
