I guess you could say his stomach dropped.
Nelson had seen the aftermath of monster attacks on tv.
He had heard the horrific outcome of having to come across these things, but his young mind could only register that from a distant viewpoint. Like witnessing a tragedy in another country. It just didn't hit you until it was in your face.
And right now, coming across this entity, Nelson didn't even know how to cope with how afraid he was.
On the road, cars that originally had places to go were now only focused on backing up. Drivers were already in panic and people we're already crashing into other vehicles and people.
A loud voice pierced the area "Manta patrol is here! Evacuate while we eliminate the threat!"
Jacob and Maria needed no time at all, Jacob grabbed Kassie and Maria grabbed Nelson. They full sprinted away from the monster.
Those men and women in armored suits began firing at the creature, sending dozens of bullets at it. As the creature came around the building it put its arms in a protective position in front of its face. It growled in a way that let one look at its humanoid face full of misshapen teeth.
As Nelson was being carried, he looked over his mom's shoulder to see the monster wind up its hand before attacking one of the soldiers, delivering a blow that sent his crashing through cars and into the cafe his father wanted to go into.
Whatever was happening right now, Nelson wished for it to end.
More reinforcements came in Armored vehicles that had massive cannons mounted on top of them. As They ran past a few that were shooting beams of heat at the giant.
Nelson turned to look at his sister, who was also in his dad's arms. She looked even more confused than he was.
While the creature was delayed, An armored truck carrying survivors came into view. Their were men all around it both carrying survivors and making sure no cars got in front of them.
"We have to hurry, before it gets full!" Jaxon quickly ran to it the truck, eager to put Kassie inside.
Maria was just as keen, but had some issues. Her arms were tired. Having the young Nelson run on his own was no issue, she had another.
Her son had chicken legs. Almost literally.
His legs were that of birds. One of his arms had transformed into a wing and he was now flopping in the road, trying to get his bearings.
"Mom…what's going on? Am I being taken over?" He sat down in confusion. Maybe he could crawl to the truck.
Maria took one look at it and saw that it was quickly filling to the brim with people.
Eventually, she Mustered up enough strength to pick him up, wrapping her arms around her son. "Be calm son. Once we get home, I'll get you that dumb expensive toy you wanted."
His eyes had a small shine in them.
"I can get hyper man?"
His mother nodded. "As long as you relax, we'll get out of here."
They were ten feet from the Truck and all the soldiers was getting inside. Nelson's body parts had returned to normal, so Maria had let him run towards the truck.
Nelson was sprinting towards the truck, the thought nothing of a car going around it. And then he heard a loud bump that caused him to turn around, just as he was getting into the truck.
Nelson was just barely able to squeeze in.
And when he did he was in disbelief. His mom was lying in the road, just a few feet from the truck. Not only that, but the driver who did it quickly turned around.
As Nelson looked into his mothers eyes, he saw a relaxed smile. While Nelson was staring in disbelief, that monster was drawing closer.
And with each step it was getting closer and closer to his mom.
"You have to save her! Do anything!"
Jacob was trying to argue her rescue and yet, he was met with cold silence.
Jacob tried to punch one of their suits and instead ended up injuring his hand.
The woman inside gave a laugh that was not indicative of humor. "You know…it's taking everything in me not to throw you off this thing."
"I mean seriously, we show up, lose a bunch of men trying to save people, and we pick up an ungrateful bastard who refuses to even thank us or think about the lives it cost for you to make it out.
One of my friends were in that fight. Some of the people I trained with as well. If another word leaves your mouth, In honor of their memory, I will kill you myself."
Nelson didn't give a fuck about the argument at hand. That monster didn't have any distractions anymore and was now running full sprint at them.
Luckily, the truck was already in motion at this point.
"Mom…get up."
Yet she stayed motionless. As the monster drew closer, Nelson grew more fearful.
"It's gonna get you!"
As the monster reached for his mother, one of the soldiers put a hand in front of his eyes.
"MAMAA!"
