Chapter 39 - No One Left But You

The mansion was quiet again.

Too quiet.

The kind of silence that didn't bring peace—

It brought awareness.

Sophia felt it the moment she woke up.

No tension in the halls.

No urgent footsteps.

No whispered conversations about threats and attacks.

Isabella was gone.

The war—

Was over.

But somehow…

It didn't feel like relief.

It felt like something else had taken its place.

Something heavier.

Something closer.

Sophia sat up slowly, her fingers brushing through her hair as she stared ahead.

This should feel different.

Safer.

Lighter.

But it didn't.

Because now—

There was nothing between her and Luciano.

No distractions.

No enemies.

Just him.

"You're awake."

Her breath caught slightly.

She hadn't heard him come in.

Luciano stood by the door, watching her.

Always watching her.

Sophia swallowed.

"Yes."

Silence stretched between them.

But it wasn't the same silence as before.

It wasn't uncertain.

It was… focused.

On her.

"You should be resting," he said.

Sophia frowned slightly.

"I've been resting."

A pause.

"I'm fine."

Luciano stepped closer.

"You're not."

She let out a quiet breath.

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

He stopped in front of her.

Too close.

Not enough space to breathe properly.

Sophia looked up at him.

Something in his gaze made her chest tighten.

It was darker now.

Not just protective.

Possessive.

"You almost died," he said.

Her breath caught.

"I didn't."

"You could have."

A pause.

"And I won't let that happen again."

There it was.

That tone.

That certainty.

Sophia shifted slightly.

"You can't control everything."

Luciano's gaze didn't waver.

"I control what matters."

Her chest tightened.

"And that includes me?"

A pause.

Then—

"Yes."

The honesty hit harder than anything else.

Because he didn't hide it.

Didn't soften it.

Didn't pretend.

Sophia stood slowly, stepping away from the bed.

Creating space.

"I'm not something you control," she said.

Luciano moved with her.

Closing the distance again.

"You stayed."

Her heart skipped.

"I did."

"That means something."

"It doesn't mean that."

Silence.

Heavy.

"It means you chose this," he said.

Sophia's chest tightened.

"It means I chose to stay," she corrected.

"That's the same thing."

"No, it's not."

Luciano stepped even closer.

Now—

There was no space left.

"You're here," he said quietly.

Her breath hitched.

"Yes."

"And you're not leaving."

A pause.

"…No."

That was all he needed.

His hand lifted—

Gripping her chin gently but firmly.

Forcing her to look at him.

"Then stop pretending this isn't what it is."

Her pulse raced.

"And what is it?" she whispered.

A pause.

Then—

"Mine."

The word echoed between them.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

Sophia's breath caught.

"You don't get to decide that," she said.

Luciano's grip tightened slightly.

"I already did."

Silence.

The tension between them—

It wasn't soft anymore.

It wasn't uncertain.

It was intense.

Unavoidable.

"This isn't healthy," she said quietly.

"I never said it was."

That made her chest tighten.

"Then why—"

"Because I don't care."

The words landed hard.

Too hard.

Sophia stared at him.

"You should."

Luciano's gaze darkened.

"Why?"

"Because this—"

She gestured between them.

"—this could destroy everything."

A pause.

Then—

"Let it."

Her breath caught sharply.

Because he meant it.

Every word.

"You don't even hear yourself," she whispered.

"I do."

"And you're okay with it?"

A pause.

"Yes."

Silence.

Heavy.

Unsettling.

Sophia's chest rose and fell unevenly.

"This isn't just about protection anymore," she said.

Luciano didn't deny it.

"No."

"Then what is it?"

A long pause.

Then—

"Obsession."

The word settled between them.

Final.

Unavoidable.

Sophia's heart pounded.

"You're admitting that?"

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No denial.

Just truth.

"And you're still here," he added.

Her breath hitched.

"I am."

Silence.

Because now—

There was nothing left to hide.

Nothing left to pretend.

Sophia stepped back slightly.

But not far.

Never far.

"This is dangerous," she whispered.

Luciano stepped forward again.

"I know."

"And you're not stopping."

"No."

A pause.

Then—

Sophia looked at him.

Really looked at him.

And instead of fear—

There was something else.

Something just as dangerous.

"Then neither am I."

That—

That changed everything.

Because now—

It wasn't one-sided.

It wasn't control.

It wasn't fear.

It was mutual.

And that made it worse.

So much worse.

Outside—

The world moved on.

Unaware.

Unchanged.

But inside those walls—

Something darker had begun.

Not war.

Not survival.

Something deeper.

More dangerous.

Because now—

There was no enemy left to fight.

Except each other.

Peace never lasts.

Not in Luciano's world.

Sophia felt it again.

That shift.

That quiet before something changes.

But this time—

It didn't come with gunfire.

Or explosions.

It came with a name.

"Adriano is here."

Sophia looked up instantly.

"Adriano?" she repeated.

The guard nodded.

"He requested to see you."

Her brows furrowed slightly.

"To see me?"

"That's not happening."

The voice came from behind her.

Luciano.

Of course.

Sophia exhaled slowly.

"I don't even know who he is."

Luciano's gaze darkened slightly.

"I do."

That tone—

It wasn't neutral.

It was sharp.

Dangerous.

Knowing.

"Who is he?" she asked.

A pause.

"Someone who should've stayed away."

That didn't answer anything.

But it told her enough.

"He's not a threat," the guard added carefully.

Luciano's eyes flicked to him.

"That's not for you to decide."

Silence.

Tense.

Sophia crossed her arms slightly.

"If he's here asking for me, I should at least know why."

Luciano stepped closer.

"No."

Her chest tightened.

"That's not your decision."

A dangerous statement.

But she didn't take it back.

Luciano's gaze locked onto hers.

"It is."

Silence.

The tension between them—

Immediate.

Sharp.

"You don't get to control who I talk to," she said.

Luciano's jaw tightened.

"I do when it involves you."

Her heart skipped.

"That's exactly what I'm talking about."

Before the argument could escalate—

Footsteps echoed from the entrance.

And then—

He appeared.

Adriano.

Sophia blinked slightly.

He didn't look like what she expected.

Not like Luciano.

Not cold.

Not distant.

There was something softer in his expression.

Something… familiar.

Warm.

Soft.

"Sophia."

Her breath caught.

He knew her name.

How?

"I've been looking for you," Adriano said, stepping forward.

Luciano moved instantly.

Blocking him.

"Stop."

The command was low.

Deadly.

Adriano didn't flinch.

His gaze shifted to Luciano.

"I'm not here for you."

That was a mistake.

Luciano's expression went completely still.

"Then you're here for the wrong reason."

Sophia stepped slightly to the side.

"Wait—"

Both men looked at her.

"Who are you?" she asked.

Adriano's gaze softened.

"You don't remember me."

Her brows furrowed.

"No."

A faint smile.

"Not surprising."

A pause.

"But I remember you."

Something about that—

It made her uneasy.

"We met years ago," Adriano continued.

Luciano didn't move.

Didn't interrupt.

But the air around him—

It changed.

"You were younger," Adriano said.

Sophia searched his face.

Trying to find something.

Anything.

Lies.

Nothing at all.

"You helped me once," he added.

That made her pause.

"I did?"

He nodded.

"You probably don't remember."

A pause.

"But I never forgot."

Silence.

Something shifted.

Subtle.

But enough.

Luciano stepped forward again.

"This is over."

Adriano's gaze flicked back to him.

"I'm not here to fight."

"That's not your choice."

Sophia frowned slightly.

"Stop," she said.

Both men paused.

"I want to hear this," she added.

That was it.

That was the moment.

Something in Luciano snapped.

Not loudly.

Not visibly.

But deeply.

"No."

The word wasn't just firm.

It was final.

Sophia's chest tightened.

"Luciano—"

"You don't talk to him."

Her heart started racing.

"You don't decide that!"

Silence.

Then—

Luciano turned to her slowly.

And his eyes—

They weren't just dark anymore.

They were dangerous.

"Yes," he said quietly.

"I do."

The room went still.

Adriano watched carefully now.

Observing.

Understanding.

"Luciano," he said calmly, "you're proving my point."

That made things worse.

Luciano's gaze snapped back to him.

"Say that again."

Adriano didn't back down.

"She's not yours."

And that—

That was it.

Luciano moved so fast—

It was almost impossible to see.

He grabbed Adriano by the collar—

Slamming him against the wall.

"Say it again," Luciano said.

Low.

Deadly.

Sophia's heart pounded violently.

"Stop!"

But neither of them listened.

Adriano didn't struggle.

Didn't panic.

"She's not yours," he repeated calmly.

The room felt like it was about to explode.

Luciano's grip tightened.

His control—

Gone.

"You don't know what you're talking about," he said.

Adriano's gaze flicked briefly to Sophia.

"I know enough."

That was dangerous.

Too dangerous.

"Luciano, let him go," Sophia said.

Her voice steadier now.

But urgent.

He didn't move.

Didn't listen.

"Luciano."

That—

That was the only thing that reached him.

Slowly—

Reluctantly—

He let go.

Adriano straightened his shirt calmly.

Unshaken.

"This isn't over," Luciano said.

Adriano met his gaze.

"No," he replied.

A pause.

"It's just starting."

And then—

He looked at Sophia.

"I'll come back."

And just like that—

He walked away.

Silence.

Heavy.

Explosive.

Sophia turned to Luciano.

"What was that?"

But Luciano didn't answer.

Because right now—

He wasn't thinking.

He was feeling.

And what he was feeling—

Was far more dangerous.
