Chapter 41 - I Am Not Yours

The door slammed.

Hard.

The sound echoed through the room—

Sharp.

Final.

Sophia stood there, her chest rising and falling unevenly, her heart still racing from everything that had just happened.

From the kiss.

From his words.

From the way he said mine like it was already decided.

"You don't get to do that."

Her voice cut through the silence.

Luciano didn't respond immediately.

He stood a few feet away, watching her.

Calm.

Too calm.

"Do what?" he asked.

Sophia let out a sharp breath.

"Don't pretend like you don't know."

She stepped closer.

"You don't get to grab me, kiss me, and then announce to the world that I belong to you."

Luciano's gaze didn't waver.

"I didn't announce it."

That made her scoff.

"You practically carved it into the walls."

A pause.

"Good."

Her breath caught.

"Good?" she repeated.

Luciano stepped closer.

"He needed to understand."

Sophia shook her head.

"No—you needed to feel in control."

Silence.

That hit.

Because it was true.

But Luciano didn't deny it.

"Yes."

That stopped her for a second.

Because again—

No lies.

No excuses.

Just truth.

"That's not okay," she said.

Luciano tilted his head slightly.

"It doesn't have to be."

Her chest tightened.

"You don't care about what I want."

A pause.

"I do."

"Then why didn't you ask me before you did that?"

Silence.

Because he didn't have an answer.

Sophia let out a breath, running her hand through her hair.

"That wasn't about me," she said.

Her voice quieter now.

"That was about him."

Luciano stepped closer again.

"It was about both of you."

"No," she said immediately.

"It was about you proving something."

Silence.

Tension thick.

"You wanted him to see that I'm yours," she continued.

Luciano's gaze darkened.

"Yes."

There it was again.

That word.

Sophia laughed softly.

But there was no humor in it.

"I'm not something you prove ownership over."

Luciano's voice dropped.

"You're something I protect."

"That's not what that was."

A pause.

Then—

"You didn't stop me."

Her breath caught.

"That doesn't mean I agreed."

Silence.

"You kissed me back."

That—

That hit.

Hard.

Sophia looked away for a second.

Then back at him.

"I didn't expect you to do that in front of him."

Luciano stepped closer.

"But you didn't push me away."

Her chest tightened.

Because again—

That truth.

That dangerous truth.

"This isn't about that," she said.

Luciano's gaze sharpened.

"It is."

"No, it's about boundaries," she snapped.

Silence fell.

Heavy.

"Then set them," Luciano said.

That caught her off guard.

"What?"

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

"If you have boundaries," he said,

"set them."

Sophia stared at him.

Because that—

That was different.

"You want control?" he continued.

A pause.

"Take it."

The challenge hung in the air.

Sophia's heart pounded.

Because this—

This wasn't him backing down.

This was him pushing her forward.

"Fine," she said.

Her voice steadier now.

"You don't touch me without my permission."

Silence.

Luciano watched her carefully.

Processing.

"And you don't speak for me," she added.

A pause.

"I decide what I am to you."

The room felt like it was holding its breath.

Luciano stepped closer.

But slower this time.

More controlled.

"And if I don't like what you decide?" he asked.

Sophia didn't back down.

"Then you deal with it."

Silence.

Tense.

For a moment—

It felt like it could go either way.

Like he could snap.

Push harder.

Ignore everything she just said.

But he didn't.

Instead—

He stopped.

Just a step away from her.

Close.

But not touching.

And that—

That mattered.

"Say it again," he said quietly.

Her heart skipped.

"What?"

"What you are to me."

Sophia held his gaze.

Steady.

Unwavering.

"I'm not yours," she said.

A pause.

"I'm with you."

Silence.

That—

That was different.

Luciano's eyes darkened slightly.

Processing that.

"Not the same thing," he said.

"No," she agreed.

"It's better."

That hit.

Harder than anything else she'd said.

Because it meant—

Choice.

Not control.

Luciano studied her for a long moment.

Then—

Slowly—

He nodded.

Once.

"Fine."

The word surprised her.

"But don't expect me to like it," he added.

A small breath escaped her.

"I don't."

Silence settled again.

But this time—

It wasn't suffocating.

It was… balanced.

Not safe.

Never safe.

But clearer.

Because now—

They both knew where the line was.

The real question was—

How long before one of them crossed it again.

The mansion was calm again.

On the surface.

But underneath—

Nothing was settled.

Sophia felt it in the way people looked at her.

In the way the guards moved around her.

In the way he watched her.

Always watching.

Luciano hadn't crossed the line.

Not yet.

But he hadn't stepped away from it either.

And that—

That was the problem.

Sophia stood in the library, flipping through a book she wasn't really reading.

Her mind wasn't on the pages.

It was on him.

On what she said.

On what he agreed to.

"I'm not yours."

She had meant it.

But the way he looked at her after—

It didn't feel like acceptance.

It felt like restraint.

"You're distracted."

Her breath hitched slightly.

She didn't need to turn around.

She already knew.

"I could say the same about you," she replied.

Luciano stepped into view.

His gaze immediately locking onto her.

Focused.

Intense.

Too intense.

"I'm not distracted," he said.

A pause.

"I'm paying attention."

That didn't make it better.

Sophia closed the book slowly.

"That's exactly the problem."

Luciano tilted his head slightly.

"Explain."

She met his gaze.

"You're watching me like I'm going to disappear."

A pause.

"That's because you almost did."

Her chest tightened.

"That doesn't mean you get to hover over me."

Luciano stepped closer.

Not touching.

But close enough to feel.

"I'm not hovering."

"You're tracking me."

Silence.

Because that—

That was accurate.

"I know where you are," he said.

"That's the same thing."

His jaw tightened slightly.

"It's not."

Sophia let out a breath.

"You said you'd respect boundaries."

A pause.

"I am."

She stared at him.

"Really?"

Luciano held her gaze.

"I haven't touched you."

That—

That was true.

But it wasn't the whole truth.

"That's not the only boundary," she said.

Luciano stepped closer.

Still not touching.

But closer than before.

"Then remind me."

Her heart skipped.

Because that tone—

It wasn't careless.

It was deliberate.

"You don't control where I go," she said.

A pause.

"Who I talk to."

Another pause.

"Or how I live."

Silence.

Luciano's gaze darkened slightly.

"And if it puts you at risk?"

Sophia didn't hesitate.

"Then I deal with it."

That didn't sit well with him.

"I don't like that," he said.

"I didn't ask you to."

The tension spiked instantly.

Luciano exhaled slowly.

Trying—

Actually trying—

To hold himself back.

"You're making this difficult."

Sophia laughed softly.

"You think this is easy for me?"

A pause.

"I'm living in your world," she continued.

"Your rules. Your danger."

Her voice softened slightly.

"And I'm trying to find a place in it that doesn't erase me."

That—

That hit.

Harder than anything else.

Luciano didn't respond immediately.

Because he heard it.

Understood it.

But that didn't make it easier.

"You're not erased," he said.

Sophia shook her head slightly.

"I was getting there."

Silence.

"You don't see it," she added.

"Then show me."

That caught her off guard.

Luciano stepped closer again.

Still no contact.

Still holding that line.

"Show me where I cross it," he said.

Her heart raced.

Because this—

This wasn't control.

This was something else.

"Right now," she said.

A pause.

"You're too close."

Silence.

Luciano didn't move immediately.

And for a second—

She thought he wouldn't.

Then—

He stepped back.

Just one step.

But it mattered.

Sophia exhaled softly.

"See?" she said.

Luciano watched her.

Carefully.

"I don't like it," he admitted.

"I know."

Silence settled again.

But it wasn't sharp this time.

It was… fragile.

Like something being built.

Or something about to break.

"You think I'm going to cross it again," he said.

Sophia met his gaze.

"I think you want to."

A pause.

Then—

"I do."

Honest.

Dangerous.

"But I haven't," he added.

She nodded slightly.

"No."

Silence.

"But you will," she said.

Luciano didn't deny it.

"Maybe."

Her chest tightened.

"Then what happens when you do?" she asked.

A long pause.

Then—

Luciano stepped back again.

Creating even more distance this time.

"I guess we find out."

That answer—

It wasn't reassuring.

It was a warning.

Because both of them knew—

This balance?

This fragile understanding?

It wouldn't last forever.
