Chapter 40 - You Don't Belong To Anyone Else

The silence Adriano left behind—

Wasn't quiet.

It was suffocating.

Sophia stood in the middle of the room, her heart still racing from everything that had just happened.

From the way Luciano lost control.

From the way he looked at her.

Like she was something—

Someone—

He refused to lose.

"Say something."

Her voice broke the silence.

Luciano didn't respond.

He stood near the window, his back to her, shoulders tense, every inch of him radiating something dark and restrained.

"Luciano."

Still nothing.

Sophia exhaled sharply.

"That was insane."

That got his attention.

Slowly—

He turned.

And the look in his eyes made her chest tighten.

"You let him talk to you."

Her brows furrowed.

"That's what you're focusing on?"

"Yes."

The answer came too quickly.

Too cold.

Sophia took a step toward him.

"He came here looking for me. I had a right to—"

"No."

The word cut through her sentence.

Sharp.

Final.

"You didn't."

Her heart skipped.

"That's not your decision."

Luciano moved.

Fast.

Closing the distance between them before she could react.

"It is," he said.

Low.

Controlled.

But barely.

Sophia's breath caught as he stopped in front of her.

Too close.

Again.

"You don't get to decide who I speak to," she said, trying to hold her ground.

Luciano's gaze darkened further.

"I decide what threatens you."

"He wasn't a threat."

"That's not your call."

Silence snapped between them.

Tension rising.

Building.

"This isn't about protection," Sophia said.

Her voice quieter now.

"It's about control."

Luciano didn't deny it.

"Yes."

That made her chest tighten.

"You're not even trying to hide it anymore."

"No."

A dangerous honesty.

One that left no room for illusion.

Sophia stepped back slightly.

Needing space.

Needing air.

"This isn't normal," she whispered.

Luciano followed.

Closing the distance again.

"I never said it was."

Her heart pounded harder.

"Then stop acting like this is okay."

A pause.

Then—

"I don't care if it is."

The words hit like a slap.

Sophia stared at him.

"You should."

Luciano stepped even closer.

Now—

There was no space left at all.

"You looked at him," he said.

Her breath hitched.

"What?"

"You listened to him."

His voice dropped further.

"You let him stand in front of you like he had a right."

Sophia's chest tightened.

"He was just talking—"

"He was looking at you."

That—

That was it.

That was the real problem.

Sophia exhaled sharply.

"You're being ridiculous."

Luciano's hand moved suddenly—

Grabbing her wrist.

Not hurting.

But firm.

Unyielding.

"No," he said.

"I'm not."

Her pulse raced.

"Luciano—"

"You don't belong in conversations like that with men like him."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"And what does that mean?"

A pause.

Then—

"It means you don't belong to anyone else."

Silence.

Heavy.

Explosive.

Sophia's heart pounded violently.

"I don't belong to you."

Luciano's grip tightened slightly.

"You stayed."

"That doesn't mean I'm yours!"

The words echoed.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

For a moment—

Everything stopped.

Then—

Something in Luciano shifted.

Not softer.

Darker.

"You keep saying that," he said quietly.

A step closer.

"But everything you do says otherwise."

Sophia shook her head.

"No—"

"You didn't leave."

"I chose not to!"

"That's the same thing."

"It's not!" she snapped.

Silence.

Their breathing uneven.

The tension suffocating.

"You don't get to decide what I am to you," she said.

Luciano's gaze locked onto hers.

"I already have."

Her chest tightened painfully.

"That's not how this works."

A pause.

Then—

Luciano's hand moved from her wrist to her chin.

Tilting her face up.

Forcing her to meet his eyes.

"This is exactly how it works," he said.

Low.

Certain.

Her breath caught.

"This is obsession," she whispered.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No denial.

"And you're still here."

Her heart slammed against her chest.

Because that—

That was the truth she couldn't fight.

"You're crossing a line," she said.

Luciano's gaze darkened further.

"I crossed it the moment I decided you weren't leaving."

That sent a chill through her.

"You don't get to trap me here," she whispered.

"I'm not trapping you."

A pause.

Then—

"You're choosing to stay."

Silence.

Because again—

That truth hit harder than anything else.

Sophia swallowed hard.

"This isn't healthy."

Luciano stepped closer.

"I don't care."

"You will when it destroys us."

A pause.

Then—

"If it destroys us…"

His voice dropped.

"…it destroys us together."

Her breath caught sharply.

Because that—

That wasn't love.

That was something darker.

Something consuming.

Sophia looked at him.

Really looked at him.

And instead of stepping away—

She stayed.

"I'm not afraid of you," she said quietly.

Luciano's gaze didn't soften.

"You should be."

A pause.

Then—

Sophia's lips parted slightly.

"But I'm not."

And that—

That changed something again.

Because now—

This wasn't just obsession.

It was mutual destruction waiting to happen.

The tension hadn't faded.

It lingered.

Heavy.

Unresolved.

Sophia could still feel it from the night before—

The way Luciano looked at her.

The way he held her.

The way he said mine like it wasn't just a word—

But a decision.

And now—

That tension had a name.

Adriano.

"I told you he'd come back."

Sophia froze at the sound of his voice.

She turned slowly—

And there he was.

Standing in the entrance like he belonged there.

Like he wasn't walking into a storm.

"You shouldn't be here," she said.

Adriano smiled faintly.

"I don't scare easily."

"That's not confidence," another voice cut in.

"It's stupidity."

Luciano.

He stepped into the room, his presence instantly shifting the atmosphere.

He didn't rush.

Didn't shout.

But the danger in him—

It was louder than anything else.

"You don't learn, do you?" Luciano said.

Adriano's gaze didn't waver.

"I don't leave things unfinished."

A pause.

"Especially not when they matter."

That—

That was deliberate.

Sophia felt it immediately.

"Stop," she said, stepping forward slightly.

But neither of them listened.

Luciano's eyes moved to her.

Then back to Adriano.

"You're still talking like you have a place here."

Adriano tilted his head slightly.

"Maybe I do."

That was it.

That was the spark.

Sophia saw it happen.

That shift in Luciano.

The last thread of restraint—

Gone.

"You don't," Luciano said quietly.

And then—

He moved.

Fast.

Before Sophia could react—

Before Adriano could even respond—

Luciano's hand wrapped around Sophia's waist—

Pulling her into him.

Hard.

Certain.

Her breath caught.

"Luciano—"

But the words didn't finish.

Because he kissed her.

Not gently.

Not hesitantly.

Bold.

Claiming.

Deliberate.

Right in front of Adriano.

Sophia froze for half a second.

Shock flooding her system.

But Luciano didn't stop.

Didn't pull back.

Didn't care who was watching.

His grip tightened slightly against her waist—

Holding her there.

Keeping her there.

As if to make one thing very clear.

She wasn't going anywhere.

The room went completely silent.

Adriano didn't move.

Didn't interrupt.

But the tension—

It spiked.

Sharp.

Explosive.

When Luciano finally pulled back—

His hand didn't leave her.

Didn't loosen.

Sophia's breath came fast.

Her heart racing uncontrollably.

"Luciano…" she whispered.

But he wasn't looking at her.

He was looking at Adriano.

And his expression—

It wasn't just anger.

It was warning.

Final.

"You see that?" Luciano said quietly.

Adriano's jaw tightened slightly.

"I see a man trying too hard."

Wrong answer.

Luciano's grip on Sophia tightened just a fraction more.

"Let me make it clear for you," he said.

His voice dropped.

Dangerous.

"She's mine."

The words landed like a gunshot.

Sophia's heart slammed against her ribs.

Because this—

This wasn't subtle.

This wasn't hidden.

This was declaration.

Adriano's gaze flicked to her briefly.

Then back to Luciano.

"She's not an object."

Luciano stepped forward slightly.

Pulling Sophia with him.

"She doesn't need to be."

A pause.

"She chose to stay."

Silence.

Because that—

That was the truth that complicated everything.

Adriano's expression hardened slightly.

"That doesn't mean she belongs to you."

Luciano's eyes darkened.

"It means you stay away from her."

Sophia finally pulled slightly against his grip.

"Stop talking about me like I'm not here."

Both men paused.

But Luciano didn't let go.

Didn't even look at her.

"Tell him," he said.

Her breath caught.

"What?"

"Tell him you're staying."

Silence.

Heavy.

Adriano watched her carefully now.

Waiting.

Sophia's heart raced.

Because this—

This wasn't just about words.

This was about choice.

"I…" she started.

Her voice caught slightly.

Luciano's grip tightened.

Not painful.

But there.

Constant.

"I'm staying," she said finally.

Silence.

Adriano's jaw tightened.

But he didn't argue.

Didn't push.

Instead—

He nodded once.

Slow.

"I see."

A pause.

Then—

He looked at Luciano.

"This isn't over."

Luciano didn't react.

"Now it is."

Adriano's gaze flicked back to Sophia one last time.

And something in his expression—

It wasn't defeat.

It was warning.

"Be careful," he said softly.

Then—

He turned.

And walked away.

The moment he was gone—

The tension didn't disappear.

It shifted.

Straight back to them.

Sophia turned sharply to Luciano.

"What was that?!"

Now—

He looked at her.

"You heard me."

Her chest tightened.

"That wasn't your choice to make!"

Luciano stepped closer again.

"It was necessary."

"For what?!"

A pause.

Then—

"To make him understand."

Sophia shook her head.

"No—"

"To make you understand."

That stopped her.

Cold.

Her heart pounded.

"And what exactly am I supposed to understand?"

Luciano stepped closer.

Close enough that she couldn't step back without hitting the wall.

"That I don't share what's mine."

Silence.

Explosive.

Sophia's breath caught.

"I'm not yours."

Luciano's gaze didn't waver.

"You keep saying that."

A pause.

Then—

His voice dropped.

"But you didn't walk away."

And that—

That was the problem.

Because she hadn't.
