I hadn't been in Kay's apartment since our first…encounter. Back then I'd been…distracted, so I hadn't taken time to properly survey my surroundings. This time around my eyes flicked all over the room, soaking in every detail.
The first thing I noticed was an absence. Everywhere I looked there were pieces missing. Half the cabinets were cracked open and conspicuously empty. The dust on the tv stand showed the outline of a game console, recently removed. The shelf above the one holding Kay's textbooks had similar signs of recent decluttering.
When I arrived at the doorway of 'my' room I paused. The door was covered in torn paper and sticky residue. Like posters had been ripped from it in a rush. There were similar traces on the walls.
Rectangles free from dust and sun damage present on the rest of the wall. Pins and nails still hanging in place. A circle burned into the windowsill surrounded by smeared ash. I was a little shocked the room didn't smell like cigarette smoke.
