Chapter 7 - 7. The Imperial Envoy

The Imperial Envoy

The imperial banners were seen at dawn.

Gold and crimson.

The sigil of the Westonia Empire fluttered above a column of one hundred armored riders.

Greywatch's watchtower bells rang once.

Not in alarm.

In announcement.

Roland entered the hall quickly.

"My lord. Imperial envoy approaching."

Sidharth did not look surprised.

"How many?"

"One hundred knights. Fully armored."

"A display," Sidharth replied calmly.

"Not an invasion."

Lady Evelyne stood near the window.

"The capital waited longer than I expected," she murmured.

"They hoped I would fail," Sidharth answered.

"I did not."

Arrival

The envoy entered Greywatch Keep at midday.

At their head rode Lord Cassian Valmere — Imperial Justiciar.

Sharp eyes.

Measured expression.

A man chosen carefully.

He dismounted slowly.

His gaze lingered on the expanded barracks.

The reinforced gates.

The disciplined formations standing guard.

"This is… impressive for a frontier barony," Cassian remarked.

Sidharth descended the steps to meet him.

"Stability requires structure."

Cassian's lips curved slightly.

"So I see."

The Imperial Mandate

Inside the hall, parchment was presented.

Sealed with imperial wax.

Cassian read aloud:

"By order of the Emperor of the Westonia Empire…"

"You are to cease further military expansion."

"You are to submit military census reports."

"You are to present yourself in the capital within three months."

Silence filled the hall.

Cedric and Tristan watched carefully.

The noblewomen stood behind the pillars, listening.

Cassian rolled the parchment closed.

"The Emperor is… concerned."

Sidharth's expression did not change.

"Concerned about stability?"

"Concerned about ambition."

Political Pressure

Cassian stepped closer, lowering his voice slightly.

"You have absorbed five territories."

"You command over two thousand soldiers."

"You bind noble houses through strategic residence."

His eyes flicked briefly toward Evelyne and Rosamund.

"The court whispers."

Sidharth replied evenly.

"The frontier was unstable."

"It no longer is."

Cassian studied him carefully.

"You are not denying expansion."

"I am denying disorder."

'Subtle Threat'

Cassian placed another document on the table.

"A suggestion."

"A marriage."

The room grew still.

"The Emperor proposes you wed Lady Marisella Valencrest — niece to the Grand Duke of the western provinces."

A political leash disguised as honor.

If accepted:

He becomes tied to a capital faction.

If refused:

He appears rebellious.

Evelyne's fingers tightened slightly behind him.

Rosamund's expression turned unreadable.

Cassian's voice remained calm.

"Accept, and your authority over the frontier will be formally recognized."

"Refuse, and… the court may reconsider its patience."

After the Envoy Retires

That evening, Sidharth stood alone in the war chamber.

Roland entered quietly.

"This is dangerous."

"Yes," Sidharth replied.

Evelyne stepped forward from the shadows.

"If you accept, you become a piece in their game."

Elira added coolly,

"If you refuse, you declare independence."

Rosamund spoke softly,

"Either way… they force your hand."

Sidharth looked at the map.

At the five territories.

At the growing influence.

"No," he said quietly.

"They reveal their fear."
