Chapter 6 - 6The Architecture of Power

The Architecture of Power

Greywatch was no longer a dying frontier keep.

It was becoming a court.

Stone walls were repaired.

Barracks expanded.

Granaries reinforced.

The banner of Goldenheart now flew over five territories.

But conquest alone did not create rule.

Rule required loyalty — or at least hesitation.

The Council of Bound Houses

Sidharth summoned the captured and newly sworn nobles to the great hall.

Cedric of Blackmoor stood to the left.

Tristan of Redvale to the right.

Aldren of Frosthill slightly behind.

Behind them stood their daughters and female kin — now residing within Greywatch.

Lady Evelyne of Blackmoor.

Lady Rosamund of Redvale.

Lady Elira of Frosthill.

This was not coincidence.

It was design.

Sidharth spoke calmly.

"Your lands remain under your administration."

"Your tax obligations are reduced for increased output."

"Military levies will now answer to centralized command."

Cedric frowned.

"You centralize power quickly."

"Yes," Sidharth replied.

"Fragmented power invites invasion."

He gestured toward the map.

"If one of you rebels, you all suffer."

Silence followed.

The message was clear.

Later that evening, Lady Evelyne requested audience.

"You reorganize supply lines," she said.

"You integrate armies."

"You bind bloodlines."

"You are not building a rebellion."

"You are building a state."

Sidharth regarded her carefully.

"And what do you believe that state will become?"

She stepped closer.

"An alternative to the capital."

He did not deny it.

Instead, he asked,

"If Blackmoor had won on the plains… what would your father have done?"

She did not hesitate.

"He would have crushed you."

"Exactly."

For a moment, something shifted in her gaze.

Not fear.

Understanding.

Rosamund of Redvale was different.

Gentler. Observant.

She spent her time in the libraries, studying trade records.

Elira of Frosthill was sharper.

Ambitious.

She watched the officers more than the nobles.

None were officially wed yet.

But their presence at court created gravity.

Whispers spread among soldiers.

Speculation grew among servants.

Goldenheart was not merely conquering land.

He was absorbing lineages.

Training intensified.

Shield rotations perfected.

Crossbow reload times reduced.

Instead of reckless expansion, Sidharth focused on discipline.

A professional army, not a swelling mob.

Roland reported during evening council:

"My lord, Thornvale's harvest has increased by twelve percent."

"Bandit activity across all five territories has dropped to near zero."

"Good," Sidharth replied.

"Order precedes expansion."

Subtle Conquest

A small neighboring lord — Baron Halvek — sent tribute without being attacked.

Grain.

Silver.

A letter pledging "friendship."

Roland looked amused.

"He surrenders without battle."

Sidharth shook his head.

"No."

"He chooses survival."

Halvek would remain independent — for now.

But economically dependent.

Conquest did not always require siege engines.

Sometimes it required inevitability.

Later that night, Rosamund approached him quietly in the courtyard.

"You could have forced marriages immediately," she said.

"Yet you wait."

"Why?"

Sidharth looked toward the distant northern horizon — where the capital of the Westonia Empire lay.

"Because rushed alliances breed resentment."

"I prefer willing submission."

Rosamund studied him carefully.

"And will we be willing?"

His answer was calm.

"You already are."

She did not argue.
