Chapter 38: The Hidden, The Shown, And The Non-To-Exist.
~~~ [START]
Small droplets of rain descended from the sky as Jessica walked out, eyes turning toward Mike, who was leaning on his car, drowning himself in beer.
Then, slowly, as if resistant to the water falling from heaven, she approached.
"Hey," Jessica said, smiling and leaning on the car after Mike nodded back.
Then, for a moment, the quiet was kept, with Mike occasionally continuing his sips.
Jessica finally turned to him. "Can we talk?"
And a breath escaped him, too silent, too hesitant.
But, as if in understanding, he shifted to her, smiled, and nodded. "I heard Gina's neighbour sells ice cream."
Jessica giggled at his chuckle, then in the next moment, she followed behind him as he made his way.
But a glimmer of Alice blessed her vision, so she turned, unexpecting, gaining sight of Troy who was following behind her; Alice was leading him to the back, with both her hands pulling on his arm, as an ant would to a giant.
But instead of dread, she felt a sudden jolt of contempt. Or maybe it was the feeling of heartbreak, but she was still too young to notice.
So, she smiled, turned, and proceeded to follow Mike, who nearly tripped from drunkenness.
"You know… this is usually the part where the main character's friend dies in horror movies," Alice suddenly remarked, glancing back at Troy, who was now raising a brow.
"What?" Troy questioned, but she giggled as though making fun of his expression.
So, she turned to him again, this time pulling harder. "Relax, we aren't friends."
Troy nearly questioned her words, but all effort halted when his eyes landed on an object that was hidden in the darkness.
Alice had taken him behind Gina's house, continually saying the thing she had to give him would be there. But what his eyes saw next sent shivers down his spine.
It was blood. Nothing but red blood and dead bats, all sealed within the glass cube.
How did she know? He thought to himself, his eyes jolting to her, widened.
"It took me the entire night to kill them, but…" Alice stood on her toes, somewhat to increase her height.
Troy shot a look, one she realised was full of unending questions.
"I saw it in a vision." Alice winked when she said it, and again, without waiting for his words, she grabbed his hand, then moved closer to him.
It was hideous to look at. Fully filled with twenty bats that continually leaked the blood within them, continually increasing the cage's mass. Troy never used red paint for his paintings, but he tended to lean toward using the blood of bats.
They were the only thing that reminded him of that man. The only reason he couldn't really draw with anything else.
His hand lifted forward in automation, and the scent slipping through the box's invisible corners felt too sudden and tempting.
And when his fingers touched it, he could clearly remember the day he first took a life. 'We don't kill to drink,' the man would always tell him.
"You like it?" For the first time, Alice interrupted his thoughts.
Troy swallowed. "Um, yeah. Do they—?"
"No." Alice laughed while shaking her head. "I brought it here this morning. Unless, of course, Edward read my mind."
"So they know?" Troy asked again. And this time, Alice lifted her shoulders.
"But even if they did." Alice slapped him on the back, lightly shrugging him forward. "They'll just think it's a weird hobby."
{ELSEWHERE}
It was getting late, so the music was a whole lot quieter in comparison to the beginning.
"It's Honey, right?" Bella lifted a hand, tapping Honey on the shoulder. And Honey's white teeth nearly blinded her after she turned.
"Yeah, hey," Honey said, but then turned an angry glance toward Que, who was trying with all his luck to climb the stairs and approach Gina's door.
"Okay! I get it," Que said, walking back. "I'll leave."
"You came with Jessica, right?" Honey's frown switched to a smile the moment she turned back to Bella. "How's it going… oh shoot, we actually take PE together."
The latter skipped Bella's mind.
"I need a drink," Honey suddenly admitted; the continuous management was giving her a headache.
Bella nearly giggled at the expression she was making, causing Honey to also shear a similar smile.
"You want a drink?" Honey offered.
But Bella raised her hands in surrender. "Om, yeah, no, I don't drink alcohol."
"I mean juice, silly."
And they laughed after the words.
It was strange that Bella thought it was normal for a teen to offer alcohol occasionally.
So, Honey pulled Bella onto the crowd as they made their way toward the stands, not knowing that the juice was spiked.
They both should have asked before planning on drinking, or more to the fact, Honey should have known.
For how foolish to trust the devious with sanity. Not all was as clear as it seemed.
For in the world they lived in, were the hidden, the shown, and the non-to-exist.
