Chapter 44: He Who's Unyielding.

~~~ [START]
"What?" Troy questioned, puzzled by Bella's widened eyes. "You know I'm joking, right?"
Bella laughed nervously, but she didn't even answer.
"I'm back!" a voice yelled from downstairs, causing Troy to glance at Jacob, who was now snoring under his breath.
"I don't know this guy, so… I'm leaving him with you." Troy got up, but raised a brow when Bella stood up after him.
"I'll walk you to the door," Bella said, grabbing her jacket, which she placed on top of one of the boxes.
"You don't have to, I don't want it looking weird." Troy walked to the door, eyes trailing back to Jacob. "He likes you."
Bella nervously smiled, but even then, she followed after him, so the only thing he could do was sigh at her actions.
"Mr Swarn, thanks for the food," Troy said after walking downstairs.
Charlie nodded, "Yeah, well, I would've said you're welcome, but you and Jacob finished my beer."
Troy faked a smile, hand scratching the back of his head, as Bella giggled behind them.
"Yeah, good night," Troy said, walking out.
Charlie paused when he noted that Bella was walking out with him. He raised a hand to question, then stopped; he didn't know how to ask.
So, just like that, the door shut after their exit.
"Is Edward the same thing?" on the other side, Bella suddenly asked. She couldn't even wait; her hand was still holding the doorknob.
Troy glanced back, "Huh?"
"I mean a vampire," a smile crept up her lips when she said it, "Is Edward also—"
"What are you talking about?" Troy laughed, head shaking while walking away, "I'm too drunk for this—"
"I saw it!" Bella shot. "You had a huge cut on your hand… You don't even have a scar on your hand to show for it."
Troy sighed with a faint laugh at the unending interest in her eyes.
"You're a vampire, aren't you?" Bella asked again, this time, for some reason, stepping closer, "Wait, is Honey a vampire too—"
Bella's eyes widened as she abruptly stumbled back. From the mere mention of Honey's name, Troy's eyes suddenly turned blood red.
But after a blink, Troy's eyes returned to normal, as if she were imagining it.
Troy suddenly turned, glancing behind them, right at the far woods. He raised his hands in surrender, "I didn't tell her anything; this is your problem."
Without waiting for Bella to question, Troy walked away, climbing into his car and driving off.
Bella's breath hitched from the sight; she clearly saw it, saw them.
She turned, quickening her pace, running to her room.
"Bella," Charlie stopped her mid-step, right in the middle of the stairs. "Are you good?"
"Yeah," Bella replied, trying with all her might to control her breathing, while turning—
"Are you…?" Charlie's words continued, causing her to glance back. "Do you like him?"
Bella nearly laughed at the pure terror on Charlie's face, but her heart was beating too much, "Dad. No!"
Bella turned, walked to her room, and closed the door behind her.
She breathed in. Breathed out. And smiled, unaware that behind her—
"I told you to stay away from him," Edward said.
And she jolted after staring back; he was right in front of her.
Not a dream, not imagination, or a vision.
"How—?" Bella's eyes instinctively turned to her window; it was open. But her room was too far from the ground, so it only meant he… "He was talking to you… Wasn't he?"
The wind slipped in, causing a strand of Bella's hair to blow toward tedious dimensions.
Edward lowered his head, eyes closing, trying his hardest to resist her scent.
Then in moments, he vanished, reappearing near the window, and closing it to close off the wind.
Bella jolted in shock; she didn't know how he did it, so it was only natural for her to step back.
"Ask me what you asked him," Edward finally spoke, eyes not even turned toward her yet.
"Huh? What're you—?"
"The question!" Edward shouted in a low voice, "You asked him a question."
There was a pause in their mist, too silent, too loud to ignore.
Bella finally took a step forward, eyes narrowing as Edward's feet stepped back.
"Are you a—" for some reason, Bella's words stumbled, hesitant, scared. "Are you like him?"
"That's not the question, Bella!" Edward called her out.
So she focused, blinking to remove the bleariness that had somewhat formed in her vision. "Are you a vampire?"
Edward frowned at the question, so much so that it was visible to Bella, who rarely saw his expressions.
"No," Edward replied, something which was between a truth and a lie. "I'm a monster."
{ELSEWHERE}
Troy forced himself to yawn. Ever since that morning, his focus was thinning, and he wasn't oblivious, so he knew what it meant: death.
Pulling up to his driveway, he sighed after seeing a car parked near his spot.
Getting out, he faked a smile as the person dismounted from the top of her boot, slowly making her way toward him.
"So," Troy said, not daring to turn away, "are you visiting or… are you here because of one of those visions?"
Alice didn't smile this time; she just observed his skin. It was paler, dry, nearly a mirror of her own. "I saw you dying."
Troy faintly chuckled, "So it's because of a vision."
And as if Troy expected it, Alice stepped forward, raised a hand to his cheek, then glared at his eyes.
Not pulling him for a kiss, nor trying anything seductive. Just pure eye contact.
Troy was not an idiot, so he knew what connected them. He clearly understood the extent of her actions.
The only question was whether he would accept or remain unyielding.
