Chapter 43: A Creeper's Longest Day. [PART TWO]
~~~ [START]
Three cars pulled up to the driveway. The first, an old police van, and the others, two trucks, which kept revving their engines.
Charlie chuckled after stepping out; Troy and Jacob had been doing it since they left. "The boxes are supposed to go inside, so just… remove your shoes or something."
Jacob nodded when he came out, turning to Troy, who also did the same.
Charlie turned and walked to his house, hoping that they would listen to his request, since Bella was the one who was doing the cleaning these days.
"You drink?" Jacob pulled two beers out of the cooler-box in his trunk, handing one over with a smile.
Troy extended a hand, then opened the bottle with little to no effort, chugging it.
"Relax," Jacob said, laughing, convincing himself that the only reason Troy was chugging was that Charlie was a cop. "He might be a cop, but his cool look… I'm 17."
"Huh?" Troy stared at Jacob's back in confusion, because truth be told, he wasn't thinking about the repercussions of drinking at all.
After sipping, Jacob grabbed a box, waited for Troy to grab his, and when he did, they both approached the entrance.
Although climbing the stairs proved challenging, Jacob couldn't hold back the excitement in his chest.
"What's even in these?" Jacob asked.
Troy shrugged his shoulders. "That's what I should be asking you."
The door was open, so they just walked in.
"My room's the last one to your left," Charlie said, jarring toward the door. "Um, something came up, so I have to leave, but… I ordered some pizza. Feel free to laze around after you do the box thing."
Charlie walked out, but then he halted halfway. "Oh, and Bella's in her room… she's probably sleeping, so don't make too much noise."
Then he stormed off.
"Pizza?" Jacob repeated the word with a grin, and Troy couldn't help but laugh. And just like that, they continued with their packing, chuckling at each other's words the more time seemed to drain.
It didn't take long for Bella to look out her window from the noise, and her eyes widened when she saw Troy.
Bella jolted back when Troy glanced upward to her window, her heart pounding in her chest, inwardly wondering if he saw her.
"We're almost done." On the side, Jacob carried the last box, sweat dripping from his chin. "Help me."
Troy laughed, moved forward, and then assisted him in carrying the box inside. After reaching the room and placing it in a neat manner, a bell hooted outside.
"I'll get it!" Bella suddenly shouted, walking out of her room, while making her way downstairs.
Troy turned to Jacob. "Why're you smiling?"
Jacob cleared his throat, and in that instant, it clicked.
"Ah, that's why you're helping."
"No! What?" Jacob denied, but the faint blush on his expression betrayed him.
Troy shook his head, walking backward, taking a seat atop a box. "It's okay, man, it's not like it's a bad thing."
Jacob couldn't deny it this time; he just shrugged, while also making his way to a box that lay beside him.
"Wingman?" Jacob asked, faking a smile and staring daggers at Troy.
Troy laughed, head shaking, "Sure, I'll be a Wingman."
They abruptly turned their head to the door.
"I got the pizza," Bella sheared a nervous smile, "Oh, hey, Troy."
Maybe it hit him too late, but this wouldn't end the way they hoped.
"I saw them, but… I—" Alice's words stumbled upon themselves. And although her face was stern and unchanging, a lurking emotion remained potent.
Edythe placed an arm around her, her golden eyes trailing toward a painting on the canvas in front of them, which had the portrait of a naked creature, holding onto the naked body of a woman on its arms.
Edythe's eyes mistakenly trailed to the rest of the portraits around the room, noting a new one, and it puzzled her. "What's that?"
Alice also turned to it, but she kept silent.
"Alice," Edythe asked again, this time, her voice a tad bit serious. "Don't tell me—"
"I won't," Alice assured, both her hands now holding onto Edythe's arm.
For the first time in a hundred years, Edythe felt like her heart skipped a beat. The portrait was evil; the devil.
"Edythe," Alice said again, noting the doubt in Edythe's eyes. "I said I won't."
Edythe finally turned back to Alice. Was it trust, or the sheer effort of disbelief? She didn't know.
But one thing lay certain; the portrait was based on a vision.
Because on it, painted in white chalk, was the figure of what looked to be Alice, holding onto a woman, and drinking her blood.
The future was near, unyielding, unchanging.
"Wait, so you actually worked at a mortuary?" Bella asked, eyebrows raised at Troy, who was laughing at Jacob, who couldn't bring himself to believe Troy was telling the truth.
Troy leaned deeper into the campchair. Jacob was getting drunk; this was his third drink. "Yeah, but believe what you wanna believe, all I'll say is I worked with a lot of dead people."
Troy took another sip of his beer, not knowing he was strengthening Bella's resolve.
"But look at the good thing," Troy turned his eyes toward Jacob, causing Bella to do the same, "This guy built a whole motorcycle… He's 17!"
Jacob laughed, shaking his head while slowly drifting to sleep.
"I'm telling you," Troy turned to the ceiling above them, "he's gonna be rich."
"But why aren't you rich?" Bella suddenly asked, causing Troy to look back at her, nearly laughing.
"Were you even listening? I tried," Troy shook his head, laughing, "worked at a gym, a circus… fuck, I did everything."
He chuckled when Bella giggled beside him.
"I mean, I get it, but that's a lot of stuff… How old are you again?"
Troy lifted his beer; he could feel it. This was his fourth glass, and drunkenness was fighting in, "I honestly don't even remember… I'm like, a hundred thousand years old or something, you know."
