Chapter 41: She Who Invents.
~~~ [START]
The night was dark, and the sun below was beginning to rise on the far horizon, ascending with its light, which blessed the towering walls with stretching shadows, reaching far and endless.
Marcus walked forward toward the gate, his long, crystal hair refuting motion from the blowing wind. He stopped. "Aro?"
Aro appeared behind him like a flash of light, decreasing his pace and approaching slowly. "Brother."
Marcus turned back, and a smile blessed his lips, but the smile vanished after Aro walked past him.
"Were my words unclear?" Marcus questioned, his back still facing the retreating Aro. "I swear I sent the squire to deliver the message."
"He did."
"Then why?"
The sun rose higher, high enough for its light to touch their skin, and when it did, they both sparkled in mocking contradiction.
Aro finally stopped, glancing back. "Revenge."
"What?" Marcus's question was a whisper, with his figure turning to face him.
"We are only moons from finding him," Aro continued. "We can have your revenge, I'll see it myself that you—"
"For what?" Marcus shot. "Why? Do you hate me?!"
It was rare for Marcus to shout; in fact, this was the second time Aro witnessed his heightened voice. The first being when Marcus found the ashes of Didyme, his dead wife.
"Of course not."
"Then kill me," Marcus's words turned soft, voice cold and certain. "Take me to her."
Aro opened his mouth to speak, yet no words escaped him, as though for a moment he considered it.
"Not like this—"
"Do you want me to beg?!"
"I will not avenge her for you when you're dead!" Aro shouted back; it seemed shouting was the better way. "What, you think death will be satisfying? Maybe, but why not revenge? Why not a death with accomplishment?"
Marcus's eyes were now widened, fists clenched below him.
"I found someone, a tracker… Ash," Aro said, and Marcus's brows raised at the words.
Marcus knew who Ash was; in fact, they all did.
Marcus took a step closer. "And?"
Aro smiled. "He's hunting as we speak."
"You mean to say he accepted?" Marcus's brows deepened. "After we—"
"We did not do anything." The lie escaped Aro's lips, far smoother than he hoped. "According to all, Adrien killed him."
"Adrien?"
"The halfling." A sadness overtook Aro's face when he said it. "Your memory worsens, doesn't it? Why do you not want to remember?"
"That man will die." Marcus changed the topic. "If we don't leave to support, he—"
"Caius left with him."
Marcus's eyes widened in dread.
Aro just chuckled under his breath, shaking his head while turning back. "Don't worry too much, although our brother lacks a gift, he shouldn't struggle in the presence of an infant."
{ELSEWHERE}
A tightening overwhelmed Troy's torso. He breathed in, eyes widening, while trying his hardest to resist the edge of a scream.
He raised a hand to his chest, gaze turning to a naked Honey, who slept beside him under the covering of blankets.
With swiftness, Troy got up and made his way to the bathroom, struggling to stay straightened from the pain alone.
After reaching the sink, his eyes instinctively turned to the mirror, and even though he tried his absolute best to be ignorant, his eyes, which had now turned blood red, startled him. How long has it been since he experienced this? And the more he focused on his reflection, the more the realization sank in; he was becoming paler.
Honey turned on the bed, so Troy closed the door.
After a moment of slow breathing, his eyes returned to their golden colour, but his skin did not; even the tattoos on his arms became more apparent because of it.
Troy opened the tap, washed his face, then walked out. And he smiled when he was met with Honey, who was half glancing at him while lazily covering herself in embarrassment.
Her eyes suddenly trailed below his legs, and they widened.
"What?" Troy asked, laughing, not even attempting to hide his nakedness. "It's not like you—"
A bang on the door intruded.
Troy quickly moved, grabbing his pants from the floor and putting them on while making his way to the exit.
"Stop sulking around and help us clean!" Gina yelled at Tyler, who was downstairs, when Troy opened. Then she turned to him. "Sorry to bother, but you need to help us clean."
A sigh escaped him, perhaps finally realising that the party might not have been worth it. Well, not for him at least, because unlike the others, he actually got laid.
{ELSEWHERE}
Bella's computer flickered the more she typed.
From the Olympics to even the best gadgets that would let someone achieve that type of speed, nothing came close. So she changed her approach and started searching for things that leaned more into the unnatural.
Yet, even after a dozen searches, nothing seemed right; it felt as though she was overlooking something big.
Slumping back in her seat, her eyes turned above her, and the only person she could think of at that moment was Troy; she wasn't delusional, nor did she suffer from any sickness. She was sure she saw when his blood floated in the hallway; she wouldn't mistake it.
Straightening upright, she turned back to her computer, searching for the words 'floating blood', and her eyes widened at the result.
Paleskinned , tall, and freakishly handsome.
Those were the words that hit her when it clicked. But the more she scrolled down, the more monstrous those beautiful illustrations turned.
Vampire.
Her heart sank at the thought, and everything from the avoidance to the distance due to her scent made sense.
And unknowingly, a strange feeling of fear started boiling within her. She didn't acknowledge it yet, but later, she would.
