Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The Early Bird Gets The Worm

Penelope's POV

Sunlight shone through the curtains, it felt so lovely. She stretched as she allowed herself to take in the warmth that the sun provided. Who new everything earth provided would be taken for granted. The world was going to change and no one was prepared for it. She knew it was selfish of her to not alert others, but she was no female lead. She was not omnipotent. She couldn't hack. If she tried to leave a post, the government would track it immediately. That would be putting her family at risk.

She decided to get ready for the day. The family had lots of things to get done before 5 pm.

As she was walking towards the dining room she heard her phone alert her of a message.

*Buzz Buzz*

KR: Good morning Penelope, I believe I am at the entrance of your residence.

PW: You're here so early? I thought we agreed to meet at 9am.

KR: The early bird gets the worm.

PW: Right...Have you had breakfast?

KR: No, I figured we would eat something on the way.

PW: I usually eat breakfast with my family...sitting at the dining table. Not on the go.

KW: It's fine. I'll have s.

PW: It's fine. The more the merrier. I'll let my brothers and aunt know we will have a guest. The butler will let you in

KW: I don't wish to intrude. Go ahead and eat with them. I'll meet them later.

PW: Very well. See you at 9am, like we agreed.

She had forgotten that Killian practically lived at the office. He would be the first person there and also the last to leave.

"Good Morning Penny"

"Morning Penn"

Both Aunt Mary and Kai greeted her. Erik just smiled and nodded. He never was one to talk during meals.

"Morning" Penelope said as she sat and ate.

"Oh right, Erik and I will be heading over to the medicinal manufactory to get a hold of supplies. We aren't exactly sure how your space works." Kai, the ever chatterbox, said.

"Speaking of space...I wanted to talk about this with all three of you. Also, what will we be doing with all the staff? It's not exactly a great idea to keep them here today."

"I already told them to take the day off after noon. We won't be needing them for the next few days. I also gave them their pay in advance. I included a bonus. Told them we were celebrating Penny being back to normal" Erik said with a grin.

"Excuse me? Since when was I not normal?" she shrieked causing all three family members to laugh. She felt that Erik was delusional. The previous her was very normal, okay.

"Penny, you mentioned that you wanted to talk to us about...that thing?" Aunt Mary was trying to be as discreet as ever. She did not want others to find out about the special ability her daughter had.

"Oh yeah, I wanted to talk to all of you about this but I think it's best to talk in private. Also, Kai, Erik, can you two try to get some animals. Living animals. I am thinking pigs, cows, hens, rabbits, fish, well you know. All the ones that can be used as a food source."

"Frozen animal, maybe. But what would we do with living ones? We have nowhere to keep them safe. I stayed up all night reading apocalyptic novels and let me tell you, animals mutate or get zombified" Kai said as he shivered.

"Do you have a quantity you would like? It might be troublesome but we can manage" Erik said. Penelope liked this brother very much. He was quite smart.

"Well, for cows and bulls, maybe try to get 6 pairs. Get as many hens/chickens and roosters as you can. A small litter of pigs will do. Lots and lots of fish. I think 3 pairs of rabbits will be fine as well. Don't worry about where we will keep them. I'll take care of all of that." She said as she stood and winked at them.

"Penn, where are you going?" Kai said as he watched her get up from her seat.

"I have an appointment with our survival partner. We are going to go see if we can get our hands on some defense weapons."

"Survival partner?" Aunt Mary asked.

"Yes, remember? I mentioned my boss. Killian Remington. He is waiting outside for me. He mentioned having a connection to defense weapons and asked if I wanted to get a few for all of us."

"What a good boy" Aunt Mary said. She had heard of Killian Remington but never saw his picture on any news media. She had no actual recollections of this young man.

"Aunt, I wouldn't call him a boy...per se" Penelope said, looking at her aunt with an inscrutable expression. "Let's finish this talk when I get back. To be honest with you, I don't really know what to expect from this apocalypse. I am sure I have many things I am missing on my list but lets try to prepare as much as possible." Penelope said as she left the dining room.

"Why is she in a hurry to see that guy?" asked Kai in a grumbling tone. Erik just stared at the direction where her figure disappeared. Aunt Mary smiled.

"Hush now, go and take care of the necessary things. I have asked the staff to make a few banquet meals. I'll start calling in takeout form various locations. Let's get as much as possible done. Penny is too young to hold such a heavy burden on her shoulders." You could hear the heartache in her voice.

"Mom is right, let's get on with our endeavors" Erik said. Kissing his mother goodbye on the cheek. He felt that his mother's mindset had shifted from last night. He was not sure what it was, but he had no complaints as well.

*A/N: My apologies, although I am not fully recuperated I wanted to get back to writing. Please leave me a review. *
