Chapter 12 - THE EVALUATOR

The air was still. It just waited. The room seemed to know that something was there that didn't belong.

Kalen stood just inside the sealed Sovereign Wing. The man in front of him did not look special at first. He was average height and had a good posture. He wore a black academy uniform with no insignia.. There was something about him. He had a presence that felt like gravity pushing against the room.

"You took longer than I thought you would " the man said calmly. Kalen didn't step forward. "The door is locked " he replied. "It seems like you planned this."

The man smiled a little. "That's correct."

Inside the room was silent. Lyra wasn't joking anymore. "…I don't like him." she said. Nyxara's voice was low and protective. "He's not a student." Asha'Kareth agreed. "No he is trained."

The man tilted his head a little studying Kalen like he was a mysterious specimen. "Your duel caused a lot of problems" he said. "Someone with a rank like yours shouldn't be able to reverse authority. You shouldn't be able to destabilize an A-rank construct like that."

Kalen crossed his arms. ". Yet I did." The man's eyes got sharper. ". Yet you did."

Then the man said, "Show me " Kalen didn't move. "No."

The room was silent. Then the pressure in the room changed. It felt like the room had been pushed underwater. The man took a step forward. "I wasn't asking."

[THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME]

Kalen's body reacted before his mind did. He stepped back just as the man disappeared. There was no movement, no blur. He was just gone.

Then Kalen felt a hit. His arm went up. It was too late. The hit wasn't at full force but it was enough. His body slammed into the wall behind him cracking the surface. It hurt a lot. The pain was sharp and real.

Lyra snapped, "HEY. That's not a test." Nyxara's voice turned cold. "He's trying to break you." Asha'Kareth said, "Focus."

Kalen pushed off the wall. There was blood on his lip. The man was standing where he had been, calm and untouched. "Your reaction speed is okay " he said. ". Your defense isn't good enough."

Kalen wiped the blood from his lip. "Are you done talking?" The man's eyes sparkled a little. "No."

He moved again. This time Kalen was ready. When the man's presence shifted Kalen stepped sideways. The hit passed his shoulder; close but not touching him. The man changed his attack instantly. His second hit was faster and sharper. Kalen leaned back barely dodging.

The pressure in the room built up. The room felt smaller like it was being squeezed. Lyra muttered, "This isn't a duel." Asha'Kareth replied, "No, it is an evaluation."

Kalen breathed out. Stopped retreating. The next attack came, direct and clean with a hidden intent to kill. Kalen didn't dodge. He stepped forward.

[SYNC INITIATED]

Energy surged, focused and tight. The man's hit met Kalen's raised hand. For a split second they were still.

[AUTHORITY REVERSAL ACTIVATED]

Then the force twisted. Snapped, reversing direction. The man's body shifted, not thrown or broken. Forced back two steps.

The room was silent holding its breath. For the first time the man stopped moving. "Confirmed " he said quietly. His gaze sharpened, no longer curious but certain. "You're a Sovereign candidate."

Kalen's chest rose slowly. "What's that?" The man ignored the question. Instead he straightened. The pressure in the room vanished completely.

The fight was over. "For now " the man added. Kalen frowned. "That's it?" The man turned slightly. "You survived. That's enough."

Nyxara's voice burned softly. "He held back." Lyra said, "A lot." Asha'Kareth remained calm. "He was measuring your limits."

The man walked toward the door then stopped without turning. "They will come for you soon." Kalen's eyes narrowed. "Who?" The man smiled a little. "…The ones who erased others, like you."

[SYSTEM ALERT: RESTRICTED DATA TRIGGERED]

The door unlocked. Opened. The man stepped out. Vanished into the academy like he had never been there.

The silence was heavy and lingering. Kalen stood still thinking and processing. Then he said, "…Sovereign candidate?" Lyra exhaled. "Well… that explains a lot." Nyxara's tone softened. "But not everything." Asha'Kareth spoke last. Her voice held something new something deeper. "They've found you."
