Chapter 18 - THE GIRL WHO DOESN’T WAIT

The second clash didn't happen.

It was interrupted.

A flash; it was bright and sharp. Like lightning that wouldn't obey the sky.

The assassin stopped moving. His body Locked. Not by force. By something else.

It was an energy; refined and precise.

A voice came. It was clear and unapologetic.

"You're in my domain."

Kalen turned and saw her. She didn't arrive quietly. She arrived like she had always been there and everything else was late.

White coat with a Gold-threaded uniform beneath. Her hair was the color of pale ash, tied high, strands catching the flickering festival light.

Her eyes were cold. Focused. Alive with power that was barely controlled.

Lyra said softly. "Ohhh she's dangerous."

Nyxara's tone got sharper. "…I don't like her."

Asha'Kareth watched in silence.

The girl stepped forward walking past Kalen. Not asking. Not acknowledging him.

Yet.

Her attention locked onto the assassin.

"S-rank enforcement unit " she said calmly. "You're trespassing."

The assassin didn't respond. He broke free. Energy cracking around him. "…Interference accepted."

He moved. She moved first. No hesitation. No wasted motion. Her hand lifted; he air bent not visibly but you could feel it.

The assassin's path changed. His attack missed immediately she stepped inside his guard; One strike. Not flashy. Not loud. Decisive.

The assassin staggered.

Kalen's eyes narrowed. "She's efficient " he said.

Lyra grinned. "Understatement."

The girl didn't stop. Second strike. Third. Each one controlled. Each one landing but The assassin adapted barely keeping up now. For the first time, he was the one reacting.

She ended it with a pulse of energy focused at a single point. The assassin's body froze. Then dropped. Unmoving.

Silence followed.

Clean. Sharp. Final.

The girl breathed out then turned. Her eyes landed on Kalen assessing him not with curiosity but by sizing him up.

"You're the anomaly everyone's talking about" she said.

Kalen met her gaze. "You interrupted."

There was a small pause and then a tiny shift in her expression. "…You're not wrong."

Nyxara's presence tightened. "She's looking at you too closely."

Lyra chuckled. "Another one."

Asha'Kareth finally spoke. "She is not like the others."

The girl stepped closer. Stopping right in front of him, not invading his space but not distant either.

"I'm Elyra Voss," she said.

"S-rank."

"Enforcement division."

Kalen tilted his head. "And?"

Her eyes sharpened slightly. "And now you're now under observation." A pause. "…By me."

Lyra laughed. "Called it."

Nyxara's tone dropped, possessive again. "She's claiming you."

Asha'Kareth didn't deny it.

Elyra studied him for a second longer. Then said quietly "You're either a threat…" A pause. "…or something worse."

Kalen's lips curved faintly. "…Which one do you prefer?" For the time, a flicker of interest. Real interest. "…I'll decide."

Behind them, the festival lights flickered back to life as if nothing had happened, as if the academy could pretend control hadn't slipped but It had; because everyone important knew it.

Elyra stepped back. Already turning away. "Stay alive." she said. Not a request. Not concern. A statement. "…I'm not done evaluating you." As she walked off without looking like she had already decided.

Kalen watched her go.

"…S-rank." Lyra hummed. "Oh she's going to be a problem."

Nyxara's voice was quieter but sharper. "…She's going to be competition."

Asha'Kareth spoke last and her tone was absolute. "No." A pause. "She will be useful."
