After the first wave broke there was a pause. This wasn't peace. It was like the calm before the storm. The column of light at the plaza's center started to change, it got narrower and stronger. The constructs that were still standing moved to form a circle around something.
"Core relay." Elyra said. "They're making a gate or a transmitter."
Seraphine looked at Kalen's blade. "And you're…adapting." she said.
Kalen looked at the weapon in his hand; studying it carefully. It wasn't a piece of metal. It was like a language that he could use to talk to the enemy. Each time he moved the blade it was like writing a sentence that the enemy would only understand late.
"I don't feel like I am learning it," Kalen said quietly. "It feels like I'm remembering it."
Asha'Kareth answered away. "Because it is yours." she said.
Nyxara touched Kalen's wrist lightly. "Show me." she said.
Lyra smiled. "Yes, please." she said.
Elyra stepped closer because she was very curious. "There are different types of weapons in the academy armory." she said. "If you can use them."
"I don't need the armory." Kalen replied.
He let the blade change with a thought. It didn't disappear, it just changed into something else. The air got tight again. When it got loose—
A spear was in his hand. It was long, elegant and deadly.
Elyra's eyes narrowed a bit. "…That's an adaptive armament." she said.
Seraphine smiled again, her smile was thin and sharp. "…That's very convenient" she said.
Kalen moved. The spear made him stronger. It helped him reach further. He thrust the spear. It made a path in the air. He twisted it. It helped him defend himself. He swung it. It helped him control the space around him.
The constructs adjusted too. They had to. So Kalen changed again. He changed the spear into twin short blades. These blades were good for close combat fighting. He used them to put a lot of relentless pressure on the enemy.
Then he changed it again. This time he made a bow. There was no string and no arrow but he drew it anyway.
[ARMAMENT: PHOTON PROJECTILE]
Light came together between his fingers it was humming. He let it go. The shot went across the plaza fast and it hit the relay's outer shell.
The column of light started to shake. Elyra didn't waste this chance. "Now!" she said.
She ran forward, Kalen was with her and Seraphine helped them by changing the path of the constructs. They were like three lines that met at one point.
Kalen switched back to the blade while he was running and he didn't hesitate. He used the blade to strike the relay's core.
The relay started to break. The column of light started to disappear.
"Again," Elyra said.
"Again," Kalen echoed.
They hit the relay together. It broke into pieces. The column of light went away.
Somewhere far away from the academy something noticed.
[SYSTEM NOTICE: EXTERNAL OBSERVER ENGAGED]
Kalen felt it. it was like a hand on the back of his mind. But it wasn't touching rather it was just measuring.
He looked up and said. "…We just knocked."
Seraphine's voice was soft but dangerous. "Then something will answer." she followed.
