The festival didn't recover. It was just pretending to be. Music started playing again. The lights were back on. Students were talking quietly instead of screaming but something was off. The academy was different now and the people who were strong enough to notice knew that this wasn't the end of it.
Kalen was standing alone in the courtyard. At least that's what it looked like.
Nyxara whispered to him "You're still being watched."
Lyra was stretching lazily, just hanging out in the back of his mind. Then she said, "No you're being hunted."
Asha'Kareth didn't say anything. Then she said, "We'll be fighting soon."
Kalen let out a breath. "…Good." he said.
Then he heard footsteps coming towards him, they were slow and confident; not trying to sneak up on him.
It was Elyra Voss.
Of course it was her. She stopped next to him folding her arms loosely. "You didn't leave." she said.
Kalen didn't look at her. "They didn't finish." he said. There was a pause. Then he said, "That's fair."
For a moment they just stood there. The silence wasn't empty, it was like they were both thinking. Then the ground started to feel different. It was like there was a lot of pressure on them.
Nyxara's voice got serious immediately. "…This one is wrong." she said.
Lyra sat up in his mind. "Oh now that's interesting." she said.
Asha'Kareths voice was sharper. "This is a high tier construct." she said.
[SYSTEM ALERT: ELITE UNIT DETECTED]
There was distortion in the air. Then something came out of it. It wasn't human, not completely. Its body looked like a man but it was too perfect. Its eyes were glowing with an artificial light.
"Target located " it spoke. It's voice was flat and mechanical. It was alive.
Kalen's eyes got sharper. "That's not the Black Division " he said.
Elyra nodded. "No." she said as she got into a fighting stance. "…That's something worse."
The construct tilted its head. "Dual anomalies detected." It spoke again. A pause. "Engagement authorized."
It moved, not fast rather it was instant. It appeared in front of Elyra and struck her. She reacted but barely. She raised her arm and energy flared out. The ground cracked beneath her feet. She slid back. She wasn't defeated just pushed back.
Kalen stepped in.
[SYNC INITIATED]
The construct immediately turned to him. It was adapting and analyzing. Its second strike came for him but he caught it. His arm trembled. "…That's heavy." he said.
Lyra grinned. "Now that's a fight." she said.
Nyxara got tighter behind him. "Be careful " she said.
Asha'Kareth's voice was sharp. "It's learning " she said.
The construct spoke again. "Adaptation successful." Then it changed its movements got refined, it became faster and sharper.
Kalen's eyes narrowed. "…It copied me " he said.
Elyra stepped in. "Then don't be predictable." she said.
Their eyes met for a second, they didn't trust each other not yet but they understood each other.
Kalen nodded. "Fine." he said.
They moved together not perfectly but close enough.
Elyra struck first, precise and direct. Kalen followed, not where the construct expected. The construct hesitated for a fraction of a second.
Elyra noticed. "Again." she said.
Kalen moved this time. Their sync got deeper.
[SYNC LEVEL INCREASED]
Their rhythm got better; Not emotional nor connected but Effective.
Strike, shift, break repeat.
The construct's movements got destabilized. Its adaptation got overloaded. Many variables, too many patterns.
Kalen stepped in, his hand gripping its arm.
[AUTHORITY REVERSAL: MAX OUTPUT]
The force snapped the construct's own power turned inward; crushing and breaking. its body froze. Then it cracked, light flickered violently through its frame.
Elyra didn't hesitate. She stepped forward with her palm out. Energy condensed, focused, released. A single precise burst, direct, to its core.
There was Silence.
The construct collapsed, Still. Dead or as close as it could get.
Kalen let out a breath slowly. "…That was new."
Elyra straightened slightly. "…That was a test."
Nyxara's voice was tense. "They are escalating."
Lyra smirked. "Good more fun."
Asha'Kareth's tone remained calm. "They are observing compatibility."
Kalen looked at Elyra. "You handled that well " he said.
She didn't smile but something shifted. "You didn't slow me down." she said. A pause. "That's rare."
[SYSTEM NOTICE: TEMPORARY COMBAT SYNERGY ACHIEVED]
Kalen looked at the broken construct. "They will send more." he noted.
Elyra nodded. "They always do." Then she turned to him fully. "This isn't optional anymore." A beat. "We work together." she said.
Nyxara's tone immediately got sharper. "I don't like that." she said.
Lyra laughed. "You don't like anything."
Asha'Kareth didn't object.
Kalen tilted his head slightly. "…Temporary " he said.
Elyra accepted that. "For now." she replied but her eyes said something else; something quieter and more dangerous. "…For now is enough."
