Chapter 10 - THE DUEL (Sovereign Awakening)

The arena was loud.

Not with excitement but with expectation.

Because they were waiting for something to happen, waiting for someone to fall.

There were thousands of students in the stands all talking at the time.

It sounded like a storm of whispers and guesses.

"F-rank versus Council elite"

"This isn't going to end well"

"He shouldn't have accepted…".

The crowd murmured.

Kalen stepped onto the platform. He was very calm, silent and focused.

Across from him was his opponent, Someone chosen by the council, a ranked elite who was smiling and looked very confident. They were completely wrong.

Lyra whispered to him "Break him".

Nyxara also added "Slowly".

Then Asha'Kareth's voice cut through both of them. She said "Win".

And because of this the academy was about to change in a big way; the F-rank and the Council pick were about to duel and it was going to be huge, for the academy.

At the highest balcony; the top of the arena the Student Council was watching.

Lucienne Vale was standing in the middle with her arms folded and her eyes fixed on the arena.

She wasn't blinking.

She wasn't moving.

Then she said "start".

The signal to start the fight hadn't even finished echoing when Kalen's opponent moved.

He was fast; too fast for most first year students to follow.

He was like a blur. His boots were making a lot of noise on the stone floor.

There was a lot of energy coming from him. It was making a violent surge behind him.

"Let's finish this quickly." The opponent said with a smile on his face.

Then a big spectral construct appeared behind him, it was like a war beast.

It was armored. It was towering over everything.

It felt like a physical force had just hit the arena.

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

"That's an A-rank manifestation". Someone said.

Kalen didn't move.

Not yet.

Inside him the system pulsed.

[THREAT LEVEL: HIGH]

Then Lyra's voice came in, she sounded happy.

"Finally, Something fun." She said.

Nyxara's tone dropped lower. "He's stronger than the last one."

Asha'Kareth's voice cut through both of them. "Observe first."

The opponent attacked first then the war beast followed.

They were both coming down with a lot of force enough to break bones.

The crowd was leaning forward waiting to see what would happen.

Kalen took one step to the side.

The attack missed him, hitting the ground with force.

The arena shook, the stone floor fractured and dust covered everywhere.

It was silent for a moment.

Then someone said "what".

The opponent's eyes widened in surprise.

Kalen was standing just outside the area where the attack had hit.

He wasn't hurt, he wasn't bothered, he was just watching.

"You're slow". He said.

The crowd was in disbelief.

"No way…"

"Did he just—"

Some murmured.

The opponent's smile wasn't as big as before, then it hardened.

"Lucky". He said

He attacked again. this time he was faster and angrier.

The war beast was roaring, it's form was getting bigger and it's power was increasing.

It was attacking again and again. it was relentless, brutal and precise.

And every time Kalen was moving.

He wasn't moving fast, he wasn't moving strong but he was just moving better.

Inside his mind—

Lyra was laughing. "Ohhh you're reading him now." She said.

"He can't touch you…" Nyxara was humming softly.

"Continue." Asha'Kareth said as she remained calm.

The opponent was getting tired, he was breathing harder, he was confused and frustrated.

"…What are you?" His opponent asked.

Kalen tilted his head a little and said "Paying attention."

The crowd was making a lot of noise; some continued their murmuring.

"This isn't normal—"

"He's not using an Echo—"

"Is that even allowed?!"

From above Lucienne's eyes were sharper, she wasn't impressed she was interested.

The opponent's face was changing, his confidence was breaking; it was being replaced by something darker.

"Fine," he muttered. Then his energy surged violently.

His Echo was getting bigger; the war beast was doubling in size, its armor was getting thicker and its claws were getting sharper.

The pressure was getting heavy; it was forcing weaker students to move back in their seats.

"Let's see you dodge this." He said.

The beast charged. it wasn't just fast but it was also controlling the area.

Every direction blocked off. There was no way to escape, no angle, no room.

The attack was coming down; it was a full force annihilation strike.

This time Kalen didn't move.

The crowd was frozen.

"What is he doing?!" Someone shouted from the stands.

Lyra's voice sharpened. "Okay now you move."

Nyxara's tone shifted. "Don't let that hit you—"

Asha'Kareth spoke. she was calm and absolute as always "Now".

Kalen exhaled then he stepped forward.

[SYNC INITIATED]

The world slowed. Not literally but perception—

Shifted.

The system surged. Energy was flooding through his body; it was controlled, focused and alive.

[SYNC PROGRESS: 31%]

The war beast's claw was coming down meanwhile Kalen raised his hand.

He wasn't blocking he was meeting it.

For a split second nothing happened.

Then everything happened.

[AUTHORITY REVERSAL ACTIVATED]

The beast froze mid-strike. its energy collapsed inward; it reversed.

The opponent's eyes widened in pure shock.

"What—?!"

The force snapped back. Violently, the beast shattered and exploded into fragments of light.

The backlash hit the opponent directly; sending him crashing across the arena floor.

It was silent; absolutely silent.

The dust was settling slowly the opponent wasn't moving.

The arena didn't breathe.

Kalen was standing at the center his hand was still raised a little while he was lowering it slowly.

Inside him the system pulsed again.

[NEW STATE DETECTED: PARTIAL DOMINION]

Lyra whispered, she sounded reverent "…Okay that was insane."

Nyxara's voice softened. "You're growing…"

Asha'Kareth spoke last and for the time there was approval in her voice "Good".

Across the arena; the opponent was groaning he was trying to stand but was failing to.

The instructor's voice finally cut through.

"…Match over." He said.

There was a pause then he said "Kalen Vire wins".

The arena exploded, not in cheers. In chaos.

"What WAS that?!"

"He broke an A-rank Echo—"

"No—he reversed it—!"

"That's impossible—!"

The crowd murmured in disbelief.

From above, Lucienne Vale didn't clap, she didn't speak, but her eyes were burning with realization.

"…So that's your ability." She said.

On the arena floor Kalen turned, walking toward the exit.

He was walking like it meant nothing, like it was normal.

Like this was the beginning.

Behind him. The academy shifted.

Power structures cracked.

Attention locked.

And far beyond the academy walls something ancient was stirring again, it was watching, it was waiting and it was interested.

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

[SOVEREIGN PATHWAY UNLOCK PROGRESS: 8%]

Kalen didn't see it but he felt it; Something had changed, irreversibly.
