Chapter 25 - CHAPTER 25 - The Crimson Duke Arrives

Chapter 25 — The Crimson Duke Arrives

The city should have been asleep.

Instead, it was afraid.

People didn't know why.

They couldn't explain the unease crawling beneath their skin or the strange sensation that they were being watched. Dogs barked at empty streets. Power lines hummed unnaturally. Shadows seemed longer than they should have been.

Something had arrived.

Something ancient.

And it was smiling.

---

The Morning After

Kael sat alone on the roof of an abandoned apartment building.

The sun had risen, but the warmth never seemed to reach him anymore.

Taro's words echoed in his mind.

"You're still my best friend."

Kael stared at his hands.

These hands had burned criminals alive.

These hands had delivered judgment.

These hands had become a weapon.

Yet Taro hadn't run.

Hadn't screamed.

Hadn't called him a monster.

The thought felt strange.

Comforting.

Dangerous.

The Devil's voice stirred.

"Attachments weaken you."

Kael ignored it.

For once.

---

Lena's Investigation

Across town, Lena sat in the café before opening hours.

A notebook rested on the table.

Inside were newspaper clippings.

Witness reports.

Photographs.

Maps.

Every story connected to the Punisher.

She felt ridiculous doing this.

And yet...

The evidence kept pointing toward the same impossible conclusion.

A man disappears.

The Punisher appears.

A red flash.

A burning alley.

Kael missing again.

Lena sighed heavily.

"No..."

She wanted to dismiss it.

But her heart wouldn't let her.

Something was wrong.

And somehow, Kael was connected to it.

---

Underground

Far beneath the city...

Darkness moved.

Massive stone pillars stretched endlessly into the abyss.

Ancient chains hung from walls carved with forgotten symbols.

Most had broken.

All but one.

A towering figure stood before the final chain.

His appearance was human.

Mostly.

Long crimson hair.

Golden eyes.

Black formal clothing that looked centuries old.

His smile revealed slightly sharpened teeth.

Azrael Voss.

The Crimson Duke.

One of Hell's oldest nobles.

He stared upward through layers of earth and concrete.

Directly toward the city above.

Directly toward Kael.

"I can feel it."

His smile widened.

"The Devil's Mark."

The final chain snapped.

The cavern shook.

Dark crimson energy erupted outward.

And Azrael Voss stepped into the world once more.

---

A Gathering Storm

That evening, rain returned.

The city lights reflected across wet pavement.

People hurried home.

Nobody noticed the elegant man standing at the center of a busy intersection.

Nobody except Kael.

The moment Azrael entered the city, Kael felt it.

A pressure.

Heavy.

Cold.

Ancient.

His eyes snapped open.

Above the stranger's head...

There was no cross.

No white.

No red.

Nothing.

For the first time since receiving the Devil's Mark, Kael saw someone the system refused to judge.

His blood ran cold.

---

Taro's Call

His phone vibrated.

Taro.

Kael answered immediately.

"What is it?"

"Something weird is happening."

Kael stood.

"Define weird."

"The sky."

Kael frowned.

"The sky?"

"Just look outside."

The call ended.

Kael stepped toward the edge of the rooftop.

And froze.

Dark red clouds had appeared above the city.

Not storm clouds.

Something else.

Something alive.

Lightning flashed.

Crimson.

Not white.

Crimson.

---

The First Meeting

Azrael Voss smiled.

The city moved around him without noticing his existence.

Humans were blind to his true nature.

But one person wasn't.

Kael landed on the opposite side of the street.

Fire flickered around his hands.

The Devil's Mark burned painfully.

Azrael turned.

Their eyes met.

The entire street seemed to grow quieter.

"Interesting."

Azrael's voice was calm.

Refined.

Dangerous.

"So this is the chosen one."

Kael didn't move.

"Who are you?"

Azrael chuckled.

"I expected that question."

The stranger bowed politely.

"My name is Azrael Voss."

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"And?"

The smile widened.

"Your elder."

The air exploded.

---

The Crimson Duke

Power flooded the street.

Cars shook.

Windows cracked.

Streetlights burst.

Pedestrians fled screaming as invisible pressure crushed the atmosphere itself.

Kael's flames erupted instantly.

The Punisher emerged.

Crimson wings spread behind him.

His eyes glowed like molten fire.

Yet for the first time...

The transformation didn't feel dominant.

It felt challenged.

Azrael looked amused.

"Good."

His golden eyes gleamed.

"You survived the awakening."

Kael's fists tightened.

"What are you talking about?"

Azrael began walking forward.

Each step left glowing crimson footprints.

"You carry a fragment of Hell itself."

"I know."

"No."

Azrael smiled.

"You know almost nothing."

---

A Terrifying Truth

The Crimson Duke stopped only a few feet away.

"Tell me, Punisher."

His voice dropped lower.

"When you judge someone..."

"Who do you think is giving you that authority?"

Kael didn't answer.

Because he didn't know.

The Devil's voice whispered constantly.

The crosses appeared naturally.

The powers simply existed.

He had never questioned their source.

Azrael saw the hesitation.

And laughed.

A genuine laugh.

"Exactly."

The Duke raised one hand.

The air tore open.

A massive portal appeared behind him.

Through it came screams.

Fire.

Shadow.

Countless monstrous silhouettes.

Hell.

Kael's eyes widened.

---

The Challenge

Azrael pointed toward the portal.

"Come with me."

Kael immediately answered.

"No."

The Duke's smile disappeared.

"Think carefully."

"I'm not interested."

"You belong to us."

"No."

The word echoed.

Firm.

Defiant.

Azrael stared silently for several seconds.

Then nodded slowly.

"I see."

The sky darkened further.

Crimson lightning exploded across the clouds.

The city trembled.

"So be it."

The Duke's golden eyes became cold.

"In that case..."

Power erupted from his body.

Buildings cracked.

Roads shattered.

The ground split beneath their feet.

For the first time since becoming the Punisher...

Kael felt genuine fear.

Not panic.

Not uncertainty.

Fear.

Because Azrael's power dwarfed anything he had encountered before.

Even the demons he had slaughtered seemed insignificant compared to this being.

The Crimson Duke smiled.

And finally revealed his true intention.

"Prove your worth."

---

Elsewhere

Taro watched the crimson clouds from his apartment window.

A terrible feeling settled in his chest.

Meanwhile, Lena looked up from outside the café.

The sky reflected in her eyes.

And for reasons she couldn't explain...

She thought of Kael.

---

The Beginning of the War

Back in the city center, flames and crimson lightning collided.

The first battle was about to begin.

Kael Riven.

The Punisher.

Against Azrael Voss.

The Crimson Duke.

And neither side intended to lose.
