Chapter 27: The First Crack After Peace

Konoha's victory had become history only in name. On paper, the war was over. In reality, the world was simply changing its battlefield.

Shin Hattori felt it first as a pressure in the air—an unnatural stillness that didn't belong to peace. The village had stopped burning, but it hadn't stopped watching.

He stood alone on the Hattori compound roof at dusk, hands in his pockets, scanning the rooftops out of habit more than expectation.

Then the first kill attempt came.

Space twisted.

A kunai slipped out of a fold in the air behind him.

No warning. No chakra signature. No intent he could read.

Shin tilted his head slightly.

"…Still using this kind of thing?"

He stepped sideways.

The kunai followed.

Not thrown.

Delivered.

Shin opened a thin portal and redirected it, the blade vanishing and reappearing far across the district, embedding into a stone wall with a sharp crack.

His eyes sharpened immediately.

"Root."

The second phase hit instantly.

Three distortions opened around him—left, right, above.

Coordinated assassination spacing. Kill angles already calculated.

Shin exhaled once.

So they really came back the moment the war ended.

He raised his hand—

And stopped.

Because a different presence arrived first.

"Fire Release: Great Flame Wall!"

A surge of flame erupted across the courtyard below, forcing two of the distortions to collapse mid-step.

Shin turned slightly.

Kenshin Hattori stood on the ground, blade already drawn, cloak fluttering in the heat.

"You're getting predictable," Kenshin said coldly.

Shin landed beside him. "They used space distortion. No warning."

Kenshin's gaze didn't leave the rooftops. "Root never warns."

The remaining attackers regrouped instantly.

No panic.

No hesitation.

They adjusted.

That alone told Shin everything.

"These aren't meant to win," he muttered. "They're meant to erase."

Kenshin nodded once. "And send a message while doing it."

From inside the estate, chakra signatures ignited.

Hattori clan guards emerged from prepared positions—silent, coordinated, waiting for command that was already understood.

Shin realized something then.

This wasn't an attack.

It was a test.

Of how prepared the clan had become.

The Root operatives moved again.

Then stopped.

A pulse spread through their bodies.

Black seals activated.

Shin's eyes narrowed sharply.

"Self-destruction…"

Kenshin clicked his tongue. "Fall back."

The order came too late.

A compressed detonation of chakra erupted—not loud, not chaotic, but precise. Engineered annihilation.

Shin snapped a portal barrier open instantly.

The explosion warped into spatial distortion, ripping sound and light apart before collapsing harmlessly into the void.

When it ended—

Nothing remained.

No bodies.

No traces.

Just scorched ground and fractured stone.

Silence returned.

Kenshin sheathed his blade.

"They weren't here to survive," he said.

Shin stared at the empty space.

"…They were here to confirm something."

Kenshin finally looked at him. "That you're still alive."

A pause.

Then Kenshin added, quieter:

"And that you're still alone."

That line landed harder than the attack.
