Chapter 31 - Chapter 30: First Choice

Chapter 30: First Choice

The next morning arrived with a different weight.

Not the silence of peace.

Not the tension of war.

But something in-between—like the world holding its breath, waiting to see what Shin Hattori would become next.

Shin stood at the edge of the training courtyard, watching Kakashi and Hikari spar.

Steel clashed softly. Footsteps shifted across packed earth. Controlled, disciplined movements—both of them sharper than they had been during the war.

Kakashi slipped past a strike and tapped Hikari's shoulder with the blunt edge of a kunai.

"You hesitated," he said flatly.

Hikari clicked her tongue. "You're just annoying."

Shin watched quietly.

They were stronger.

Not just in skill.

In awareness.

War had done that.

But something else had changed too.

The way they looked at him.

Not fear.

Not distance.

Something closer to… expectation.

He exhaled slowly.

So it's already reached them.

"Still watching like an old man, huh?"

Kakashi's voice cut in without looking at him.

Shin smirked slightly. "Still talking like you've already retired."

Hikari stepped back, wiping sweat from her cheek. "If you two are done, I'd like to not get caught in your weird rivalry today."

That earned a faint pause.

Then Kakashi turned his visible eye toward Shin.

"…You're thinking about it."

It wasn't a question.

Shin didn't deny it.

"I am."

Hikari frowned slightly. "About what?"

Shin hesitated.

Then raised his wrist slightly.

The bracelet glinted faintly in the sunlight.

Kakashi's expression shifted—subtle, but sharp.

Hikari noticed it too.

Shin spoke carefully.

"There's something new about the Djinn ability."

That made both of them stop.

Not fear.

Attention.

Shin continued.

"It can now form contracts. It allows power sharing… but it requires a binding oath."

Kakashi narrowed his eye slightly. "What kind of oath?"

Shin didn't sugarcoat it.

"Absolute loyalty. Emotional stability. A shared trust bond."

Hikari crossed her arms. "Sounds like a trap."

"It is," Kakashi said immediately.

Shin nodded once. "If it breaks, the backlash is severe."

Silence followed.

The wind moved through the courtyard.

Soft. Indifferent.

Hikari looked at him more seriously now. "So why tell us?"

Shin met her gaze.

"Because I'm not choosing randomly."

A pause.

"I'm not building an army."

His voice lowered slightly.

"I'm building something I can't lose control of."

Kakashi studied him for a long moment.

Then spoke quietly.

"You're looking for people you already trust."

Shin didn't respond.

Because that was exactly it.

Hikari stepped forward slightly. "And if they say yes… they lose their freedom?"

Shin shook his head.

"No."

He corrected gently.

"They choose it. Fully aware. There's no force."

A beat.

"But once it's accepted… it becomes permanent in nature."

Kakashi exhaled slowly.

"That's worse."

Shin gave a faint, tired smile. "I know."

Silence returned again.

This time, heavier.

Then Kakashi spoke.

"So who are you starting with?"

Shin didn't answer immediately.

Instead, his gaze shifted slightly—to the side of the courtyard.

Where Mitsuki and Miyuki were arguing loudly over something completely meaningless again.

Warm.

Unaware of the weight in the world.

Hikari followed his gaze.

"No," she said immediately. "You're not serious."

Shin didn't respond.

Kakashi's eye narrowed slightly. "They're too young."

"I know," Shin said quietly.

A pause.

Then he added.

"But the system didn't include them without reason."

That made Kakashi go still.

Hikari's expression tightened. "That's not a reason."

Shin lowered his gaze.

"I'm not choosing them yet."

A pause.

"But I need to understand what this bond really does."

Kakashi stepped forward slightly.

"Then test it on yourself first."

Shin looked at him.

Kakashi's tone stayed calm.

"Use someone with experience. Someone who can handle the risk."

A beat.

Then Kakashi added:

"Someone like me."

Hikari blinked. "Wait—are you volunteering?"

Kakashi shrugged slightly. "I'm curious."

Shin stared at him for a long moment.

Then let out a quiet breath.

"…Of course you are."

A faint silence passed.

Then Shin nodded once.

"Not yet."

Kakashi tilted his head slightly. "Why not?"

Shin looked down at his wrist.

Because the system wasn't just asking for compatibility.

It was asking for stability under pressure.

And Kakashi—

was already walking toward something else entirely.

"I need to understand it better first," Shin said.

A pause.

Then, quieter:

"And I need to be sure I won't hurt anyone with it."

Hikari exhaled slowly. "That's new. You actually thinking before doing something insane."

Shin gave a small smile.

"I learned from experience."

From behind them, a voice called out.

"Oi! Shin!"

Mitsuki ran across the courtyard, Miyuki chasing after him with a stick raised like a weapon.

"Mom said you're supposed to help with training today!"

Shin blinked.

Then exhaled softly.

For a moment, the weight lifted again.

"Coming," he said.

And just like that—

the first step toward his decision was delayed.

But not avoided.

Somewhere beyond the village walls, something watched again.

And this time…

it paid attention to the names being considered.
