Chapter 27 - Chapter 26: Dawn After War

The war had not ended in celebration.

It ended in exhaustion.

Across the borders of the elemental nations, the battlefield smoke slowly thinned, replaced by the quiet aftermath of broken formations and buried names. What once roared with explosions and steel now stood silent, as if the world itself was too tired to continue bleeding.

Konoha had survived.

But survival was not peace.

In the Hokage's office, the atmosphere had changed.

There were fewer reports on active engagements. More on reconstruction. Missing-nin sightings. Political negotiations.

And something else—something heavier.

Attention.

Hiruzen Sarutobi stood before the window, hands clasped behind his back, eyes fixed on the village below.

"They're already talking," an ANBU operative reported quietly behind him. "About the Hattori boy."

Hiruzen did not turn. "I expected as much."

The operative hesitated. "Not just as a weapon, Lord Hokage… as a symbol. Some are calling him the 'Phoenix of Konoha.' Others are saying he should be placed directly under ANBU protection."

A pause.

"And others?"

"…Others are asking why such power was ever allowed to remain in the hands of a genin."

Hiruzen closed his eyes for a moment.

"So it begins," he murmured.

Elsewhere, in the Hattori compound, Kenshin stood in the training ground.

He was not alone.

Clan elders had gathered again.

Their expressions were no longer uncertain.

They were calculating.

"The war has ended," one elder said. "But what comes after will decide everything."

Kenshin's gaze sharpened. "Speak clearly."

Another elder stepped forward. "Shin is no longer just your son, Kenshin. He is no longer just the clan's heir."

A pause.

"He is a political asset now."

Silence followed.

Kenshin's jaw tightened.

"You mean a target."

No one denied it.

That evening, Shin returned from a small post-war recovery mission.

Minor cleanup work.

Rescue assistance.

The kind of missions that came after wars—when the killing stopped, but the suffering did not.

He walked through the village gates quietly.

But he noticed it immediately.

People were watching.

Not like before.

Before, he had been a promising genin.

Now—

He was recognized.

Whispers followed him like shadows.

"That's him…"

"The Hattori boy…"

"He's the one from the battlefield…"

Shin did not slow his pace.

But his hand subtly tightened at his side.

So it's already spread this far…

At the training grounds, Kakashi leaned against a wooden post, arms crossed.

Hikari stood nearby.

Neither spoke at first.

Then Hikari broke the silence.

"It feels different now."

Kakashi didn't respond immediately.

Then, quietly:

"Because it is."

A pause.

"He's not just fighting anymore. People are watching him fight."

Hikari frowned. "That's dangerous."

Kakashi's visible eye narrowed slightly.

"No," he said. "That's worse than dangerous."

That night, Shin stood alone on a rooftop.

The village lights stretched beneath him like a sea of calm illusion.

For a moment, it almost looked peaceful.

Then—

A familiar chime echoed in his mind.

Shin exhaled slowly.

"So it's not over," he muttered.

The wind moved across the rooftops.

Cold. Quiet. Unforgiving.

Behind him, footsteps landed softly.

He didn't need to turn around to know.

Kakashi.

Hikari.

They stood beside him.

For a while, none of them spoke.

Then Kakashi said:

"You're thinking too loud again."

Shin gave a faint, tired smile.

"Hard not to."

Hikari looked at him sideways.

"What happens now?"

Shin stared at the village below.

A long pause.

"I think…" he said slowly, "this is where things get harder."

The wind shifted again.

Somewhere far away in the village, unseen eyes continued to watch.

Not enemies on a battlefield.

But people.

Deciding.

Planning.

Waiting.

And deep within the shadows of what remained of Root—

A single report was delivered.

"Subject Hattori Shin has entered post-war visibility phase."

Danzo read it once.

Then set it down.

"…Good," he said quietly.

Because war had ended.

But control had not.
