"Stay as long as you like," the floor guard held the door open, his expression flat.
I appreciated that.
So far, everyone greets us with exaggerated politeness and cryptic smiles, as if we're in on the joke.
We weren't, and it's beyond frustrating.
"Thank you," I turned to face the man, not ready to witness the vastness of my family's secrets. "How do we leave?"
"Just knock," he gave me a curt nod before closing the vault door, the air changing to something that filtered through the vents.
I held my breath, turning to look at the extensive room.
This was one of several vaults, but the only one with safe-deposit boxes. The others belonged to specific individuals in my family, and I couldn't access them without permission or proof that those people were dead.
I don't know what I expected. Something cold like a tomb, or high-end like the movies, but I received neither.
"It's like a library," I muttered, scanning the giant shelves filled with rows of different boxes.
