Chapter 6 - The Waste-Chute’s Whisper

The Sector 4 waste-chutes were where the Surface Realm threw away its failures.

Tons of discarded technology, biological runoff, and luxury trash rained down through massive, armored pipes, forming mountains of scrap that the 'Hollows' of Nerathis picked through like carrion birds.

"Wait," Lira hissed, pulling Kael behind a rusted turbine. "The Astra scouts... they aren't just patrolling. They're cordoning off the entire chute."

Kael peered around the metal casing. Two scouts in silver tactical gear were standing at the base of the primary vent, their high-tech visors glowing a cold, clinical blue. They weren't looking for scavengers; they were setting up Narrative Dampeners—tripod devices that suppressed any local Index fluctuations.

"They're terrified," Kael observed, his voice a mere vibration. "Rex didn't just lose credit back at the Plaza. He lost his target. Whatever that Behemoth was guarding, it's already been flushed down into the slums."

Kael's eyes narrowed. His Zero Index allowed him to see what the scouts' sensors were programmed to ignore. To the System, the waste-chutes were a 'Null Zone'—a place where nothing of importance happened. But to Kael, the air near the central pipe was vibrating with a heavy, rhythmic pulse.

"You found the Aether-Glass here," Kael whispered, turning to Lira. "Show me exactly where."

Lira pointed toward a jagged rift in the side of a massive drainage pipe. "There. I saw a streak of violet light fall from a Surface drone. I thought it was just a high-grade battery."

"It wasn't a battery. It was a Cradle," Kael said, his mind clicking through the lore of Aetherion.

If the Soul Index was the script, a Cradle was a Redacted Line—an object or entity that the System hadn't yet assigned a value to. Rex Halvard needed it to secure his jump to Sovereign rank, because whoever claimed a Cradle could essentially 'write' their own next major event.

Suddenly, a scout's visor snapped in their direction.

"Movement detected. Sector 4-B," the scout's voice crackled through a comms-link.

"Stay here," Kael commanded, his expression becoming clinical. "Don't move, even if they shoot."

"Kael, what are you—"

Kael didn't answer. He stepped out of the shadows, intentionally crossing the line of a Narrative Dampener.

The scout paused. He saw Kael—a thin, ragged boy standing in the rain—but his visor pinged him as 'Negative Value.' The scout lowered his weapon, confused by the logic loop.

"Hey! Kid! Clear the area!" the scout shouted, walking toward him.

Kael didn't run. He looked at the scout's feet. "You're standing on a pressure-release valve for the Abyss-runoff," Kael said calmly.

"What?"

"In three seconds," Kael continued, "the sludge from the Upper City's medical bay is scheduled for a thermal purge. The script says I'm just a 'Hollow' who got in your way. But the script didn't account for the plumbing."

One.

Two.

Kael stepped back.

Three.

A violent, pressurized jet of boiling, bioluminescent waste exploded from the ground beneath the scout. The man was thrown backward, his silver armor melting as the 'Non-Event' environmental hazard overwhelmed his high-tier defenses.

Kael didn't wait for the second scout to react. He dived into the drainage pipe, the stolen blue light in his palm guiding him through the dark toward the pulse.

"He's not just a Zero," Lira whispered to the empty air, her heart hammering against her ribs. "He's the one who pulls the floor out from under the world."

Deep within the pipe, Kael reached a glowing, obsidian sphere wedged in the silt. It wasn't just an object. It was breathing.

Kael reached out. "Let's see," he murmured, "what kind of ghost you really are."
