Chapter 10 - Second Lead

The silver light emanating from Seren Vale was not a chaotic flare like Rex Halvard's gold; it was a pressurized, surgical radiance that seemed to push the shadows into the corners of the bay. Her rapier, a thin needle of frozen starlight, hummed with a frequency that made the nearby crates vibrate.

[ Identification: Seren Vale ]

[ Rank: Catalyst (Peak) ]

[ Soul Index: 9,800 ]

[ Narrative Role: The "True" Hero / Rival ]

Kael stood perfectly still. He didn't reach for a weapon—he didn't have one—and he didn't signal Lira to run. He simply watched the way Seren's eyes moved. They weren't looking at his face; they were scanning the "empty" space where the System told her nothing existed.

"You're the one," Seren whispered, her voice cutting through the hum of the airship's engines. "The glitch from the Plaza. The one the System refuses to name."

Lira, hidden behind a stack of Aether-silks, held her breath, her own Soul Index of 12 flickering with terror. To someone like Seren, Lira was just background noise, but Kael was a contradiction—a physical presence with a Zero Index.

"The System is quite loud about its certainties," Kael replied, his voice calm, even as the Seed of a Failed Protagonist throbbed against his ribs. "It must be confusing for someone so favored by the script to find a blank page."

Seren stepped forward, the tip of her rapier tracing a line of frost across the metal floor. "My Narrative Weight is 12.5% of this vessel's total. By all laws of Aetherion, I should have sensed you the moment you stepped into this bay. And yet... my eyes see you, but my Index feels only a vacuum."

[ Danger Level: Extreme ][ Unique Ability: Index Devour (Passive Sensing) ][ Target Narrative Weight: 12.5% (Seren Vale) ]

Kael didn't back away. He calculated the distance. Ten paces. If she lunged, she could pierce his heart before he could blink. But Kael wasn't playing a game of speed; he was playing a game of logic.

"You aren't like Rex," Kael observed, his eyes flecked with the violet embers of the Seed. "He wants the credit to satisfy his ego. You... you want the credit because you're afraid of what happens if the script stops following you."

Seren flinched. The movement was microscopic, but to Kael's enhanced perception, it was a seismic shift.

"I am the lead," she hissed, her silver aura flaring with a cold, jagged intensity. "The System chose me."

"The System chooses what is convenient," Kael said, stepping into the light of her aura, his hand reaching for the Sovereign-Class Seal on the crate behind him. "But I am the variable it couldn't delete. And right now, Seren, you have a choice. You can alert Rex and lose the only lead you have on the 'ghost' who surpassed him..."

He paused, the violet light in his eyes deepening.

"...or you can let me finish draining this crate, and I'll tell you why your 'Hero' status is already starting to decay."

[ Hijack Progress: 85% ][ Tension: Critical ]

Seren's rapier remained steady, but for the first time, her Soul Index flickered. Not out of fear, but out of doubt. She was the "True" Hero, but she was facing the Unrecorded Boy, and the script was no longer giving her the answers.

[ Evolution Progress: 3.1% toward Stage 2: 'Event Thief' ]
