The chieftain settled them into a pair of adjacent stone huts that had been sitting vacant. Though they were simple, having two separate spaces side-by-side was a luxury that suited Euphoria perfectly. After the grueling weeks on the road, the sudden stillness was a balm for her weary bones. She spent the afternoon humming to herself as she swept out the dust, laid down fresh, fragrant straw, and even tidied Hayes's side of the dwelling.
To her delight, the hut was equipped with a stone pot and a set of bowls. It was a small discovery, but a significant one—she was tired of the charred crust of roasted meat and was desperate for a meal with some depth.
By evening, the huts were transformed into a home. When Hayes prepared to hunt, Euphoria requested fish, a choice he met with a shrug of agreement. While he was away, she explored the village until she found the local veterinarian. In these parts, seasonings were tucked away in the medicine cabinets of healers.
