Chapter 12 - Not Just a System

The city felt different the next morning.

Quieter.

Not in sound—

But in mood.

People moved with purpose now. Less confusion, more caution. The chaos from the first few days had settled into something more controlled.

More organized.

Screens displayed rankings. News channels talked about guilds, territories, and "safe zones." The world was adapting faster than expected.

Aarav sat on a bench near the roadside, watching it all unfold.

"…That didn't take long," he muttered.

From panic to structure in less than a week.

Impressive.

Or maybe—

Planned.

He leaned back slightly, eyes scanning the area.

"…And I'm not the only one adapting."

That feeling again.

Faint.

But consistent.

Someone was still watching.

Aarav didn't react.

Didn't turn.

Instead, he stood up and started walking.

Casual.

Unhurried.

As if nothing had changed.

But inside—

He was counting.

Steps.

Angles.

Reflections.

"…Still there."

Then—

A voice.

"You're being followed."

Aarav stopped.

Turned slightly.

And saw her.

Mira.

Standing a few steps away, arms crossed, expression calm as ever.

"…You again," Aarav said.

Mira didn't respond to that.

Instead, she walked closer.

"…Three people," she said quietly.

"Same distance. Same pattern."

Aarav raised an eyebrow.

"…You noticed too."

"Of course."

She glanced past him briefly.

"…They're careful. But not perfect."

Aarav smirked faintly.

"…That makes two of us."

For a moment—

They stood side by side.

Not allies.

Not strangers either.

Something in between.

"…You're not surprised," Mira said.

"…Should I be?"

"You're being watched by people who don't belong to any public guild."

Aarav's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…And you know that how?"

Mira didn't hesitate.

"…Because I checked."

That answer was simple.

Too simple.

Aarav looked at her for a second longer.

"…You're interesting."

Mira ignored that.

"…You should be careful."

"…You said that before."

"And you didn't listen."

"…I'm still alive."

"That might not last."

Silence.

Then—

Aarav sighed.

"…So what do they want?"

Mira's expression shifted slightly.

More serious.

"…You."

Aarav chuckled under his breath.

"…Of course."

Mira continued.

"…People like you don't exist in the system."

"…I noticed."

"And when something doesn't exist…" she paused, "…it gets investigated."

Aarav nodded slowly.

"…Makes sense."

He looked ahead again.

"…So what's your plan?"

Mira glanced at him.

"…Plan?"

"…You're not just here to warn me."

A brief pause.

Then—

"…No," she admitted.

Aarav smiled faintly.

"…Thought so."

Mira crossed her arms.

"…I want to understand what you are."

Aarav tilted his head slightly.

"…That sounds worse than what they want."

"…Maybe."

Silence again.

But this time—

It wasn't tense.

It was… intentional.

"…Then let's make it simple," Aarav said.

Mira looked at him.

"…How?"

Aarav's eyes sharpened slightly.

"…If they're watching…"

He turned his head just enough—

Not directly.

But enough to acknowledge.

"…Let them watch."

Mira frowned.

"…That's risky."

"…So is doing nothing."

The air shifted.

Subtly.

The watchers were still there.

Still observing.

But now—

They knew they had been noticed.

Mira exhaled slowly.

"…You're not normal."

Aarav smiled.

"…You keep saying that."

Mira looked at him for a moment longer.

Then—

"…Fine," she said.

Aarav raised an eyebrow.

"…Fine?"

"…I'll help you."

Aarav blinked once.

"…Didn't expect that."

"…Don't misunderstand," Mira said calmly.

"I'm not helping you."

"…Then?"

"I'm studying you."

Aarav laughed quietly.

"…That's fair."

Because in a world like this—

Everyone had their own reason.

And for now—

Their goals aligned.

But far above—

On a distant rooftop—

The watchers remained still.

Silent.

Focused.

"…He's aware," one of them said.

"…And he's not running."

A pause.

Then—

"…Good."

Because that made things easier.

Much easier.
