"Because you chose her."
The words lingered in the air like something alive.
Amara felt them settle deep in her chest.
Heavy.
Unsettling.
"That's not possible," David said immediately, his voice firm but strained. "I didn't even know her."
The woman in red watched him carefully.
"You didn't know me either," she replied.
Silence.
David opened his mouth to respond—
But nothing came out.
Because for the first time…
He wasn't sure.
Amara looked between them, her heart racing.
"Enough," she said, her voice shaking but determined. "Stop speaking in pieces. Tell us exactly what happened in that room."
The woman held her gaze.
For a moment, it seemed like she might refuse.
But then—
She exhaled slowly.
"You really want to know?" she asked.
"Yes," Amara said.
David didn't speak.
But his silence was agreement.
The woman nodded once.
"Fine," she said.
She stepped away from them slightly, as if putting distance between herself and the memory.
"That night," she began, her voice lower now, less controlled…
"You were brought to the hotel under the influence."
David's jaw tightened.
"You were barely conscious," she continued.
Amara felt her stomach twist.
"They had already prepared the room," the woman said. "Cameras. Documents. Everything."
"Documents for what?" David asked.
"A deal," she replied. "One that required leverage."
Amara frowned.
"What kind of leverage?" she asked.
The woman looked at her.
"The kind that destroys reputations," she said.
Silence.
Amara's chest tightened.
"They wanted proof," the woman continued. "Something they could use against him."
David's fists clenched.
"And you were part of that?" he asked coldly.
The woman's expression hardened.
"I was supposed to be," she said.
Amara's heart pounded harder.
"But I wasn't the only one there," the woman added.
Silence.
Amara already knew where this was going.
"You were already in the room," she said, looking directly at Amara.
Amara shook her head.
"I don't remember anyone else," she said.
"That's because you weren't paying attention," the woman replied.
The words stung.
"I was trying to help him," Amara shot back.
"And that's exactly why everything changed," the woman said.
David frowned.
"Explain," he demanded.
The woman stepped closer again.
"When I got there," she said, "you were already with him."
Amara's breath caught.
"You had taken him to the room," she continued. "You stayed."
"I was making sure he was okay," Amara said quickly.
"I know," the woman replied.
That surprised her again.
"But that wasn't part of the plan," the woman added.
Silence.
David looked between them.
"So what happened?" he asked.
The woman's gaze shifted back to him.
"You woke up," she said.
David's expression tightened.
"I don't remember that," he said.
"You wouldn't," she replied. "Not fully."
Amara felt her heart pound louder.
"What happened when he woke up?" she asked.
The woman hesitated.
Just for a second.
Then—
"You were disoriented," she said to David. "Confused. Angry."
David's breathing slowed.
"And then?" he asked.
The woman's voice dropped.
"You pushed everyone out," she said.
Silence.
Amara blinked.
"What do you mean?" she asked.
"You didn't trust them," the woman continued. "You didn't know what was happening, but you knew something was wrong."
David's eyes narrowed slightly.
"And her?" he asked, glancing at Amara.
The woman's gaze followed his.
"You didn't push her away," she said.
Amara's breath caught.
"Why not?" she whispered.
The woman looked at her.
And for the first time…
There was something almost human in her expression.
"Because she stayed," she said softly.
Silence.
Amara felt something shift inside her.
"You trusted her," the woman added, looking back at David.
David didn't respond.
But his expression changed.
Subtly.
As if something deep inside him recognized that truth.
"And you?" he asked finally. "Where were you in all of this?"
The woman's face hardened again.
"I was watching," she said.
The words hit hard.
"You just stood there?" Amara asked, disbelief in her voice.
"No," the woman replied.
Then she added—
"I was stopped."
Silence.
"Stopped by who?" David demanded.
The woman held his gaze.
"By the same people who set this up," she said.
Amara felt fear creep in again.
"What happened next?" she asked quietly.
The woman didn't answer immediately.
Her eyes flickered slightly.
Then she said—
"They lost control of the situation."
David frowned.
"What does that mean?" he asked.
The woman took a slow breath.
"It means," she said…
"you made a choice they didn't expect."
Amara's heart pounded.
"What choice?" she asked.
The woman looked directly at her.
"You chose her," she said again.
"But this time…"
Her voice dropped even lower.
"…you didn't just choose her."
Silence.
Heavy.
Dangerous.
Amara's chest tightened.
"What are you saying?" she whispered.
The woman's gaze didn't waver.
"I'm saying," she said slowly…
"That night didn't end the way you think it did."
David's expression darkened.
"Then how did it end?" he asked.
A pause.
Then—
The woman said quietly—
"It ended with something that was never supposed to happen."
Amara felt her breath catch.
Because deep down…
She already knew.
Whatever happened that night…
Was bigger than all of them.
