Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 20 — They’re Already Watching

"They know you've found her."

The words didn't just hang in the air.

They closed in.

Like something tightening around all of them at once.

Amara's chest rose sharply.

"What do you mean they know?" she asked, her voice barely steady.

The woman in red didn't answer immediately.

Instead, her eyes shifted toward the door.

Listening.

Watching.

David noticed it instantly.

"What is it?" he asked, his voice low.

The woman raised a hand slightly.

"Stay quiet," she said.

Silence.

Complete.

Even Lila stopped moving, her small hands still clutching the crayon she had been using moments ago.

Amara's heart pounded harder.

Then—

A sound.

Faint.

But unmistakable.

Footsteps.

Outside.

Slow.

Deliberate.

David's expression hardened instantly.

"You said this place was safe," he said.

"It was," the woman replied.

The emphasis on was didn't go unnoticed.

Amara felt panic rising in her chest.

"What do we do?" she asked.

The woman moved quickly now.

"Listen to me carefully," she said, her voice calm but urgent. "We don't have much time."

David stepped forward.

"Who are they?" he demanded.

"The same people who set everything up five years ago," she replied. "And they don't leave loose ends."

The words sent a chill through the room.

Amara instinctively moved closer to Lila.

Her protective instincts kicking in without hesitation.

"Then we leave," she said. "Right now."

The woman shook her head.

"It's not that simple," she said.

"Why not?" David snapped.

"Because they're already here."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

The footsteps stopped.

Right outside the door.

Amara's breath caught.

Lila looked up at her, confusion in her small eyes.

"What's happening?" she asked softly.

Amara knelt quickly in front of her, forcing a reassuring smile.

"Hey… it's okay," she said gently. "We're just going to play a little game, alright?"

Lila tilted her head.

"What game?" she asked.

"A quiet game," Amara replied. "Can you be really, really quiet for me?"

Lila nodded slowly.

"Okay."

Amara brushed a strand of hair from her face, her heart breaking even as she tried to stay calm.

"Good girl," she whispered.

Behind her, David was scanning the room.

"There has to be another way out," he said.

"There is," the woman replied.

Both of them turned to her.

"Where?" David asked.

She pointed toward a small door at the back of the room.

"Storage exit," she said. "It leads outside."

"Then why aren't we moving?" David asked sharply.

The woman hesitated.

Just for a second.

And that was enough.

"What aren't you telling us?" Amara asked.

The woman's gaze shifted to Lila.

Then back to them.

"Only one of us can get her out safely," she said.

Silence.

Amara's chest tightened.

"What does that mean?" she asked.

"It means," the woman said…

"They're here for me."

The words hit instantly.

David frowned.

"Why you?" he asked.

"Because I broke their plan," she replied. "And I kept what they wanted."

Amara looked at her, realization dawning.

"You mean Lila," she said.

The woman nodded once.

"Yes."

Silence.

Then—

A knock.

Sharp.

Controlled.

On the door.

All three of them froze.

Lila's small hand instinctively reached for Amara's.

Amara squeezed it tightly.

"Stay behind me," she whispered.

The knock came again.

Louder this time.

"Open the door."

The voice from outside was calm.

Too calm.

David's jaw clenched.

"We're out of time," he said.

The woman looked at him.

Then at Amara.

Then at Lila.

Her expression shifted.

For the first time…

It wasn't control.

It wasn't anger.

It was sacrifice.

"Take her," she said suddenly.

Amara froze.

"What?" she asked.

"Take her and go," the woman repeated. "Use the back exit."

David shook his head.

"No. We're not leaving you here."

"You don't have a choice," she said.

The knock turned into pounding.

"Last warning."

Amara's heart raced.

"We're not leaving you," she said.

The woman stepped closer.

Her voice dropped.

"You already have something they can't take from you," she said.

Amara frowned.

"What?"

The woman looked at her.

Then said quietly—

"The truth."

Silence.

Then—

She stepped back.

Toward the door.

"Go," she said.

David grabbed Amara's arm.

"We have to move," he said.

Amara hesitated.

Just for a second.

Then—

She picked Lila up.

Holding her tightly.

Protectively.

And turned toward the back exit.

The last thing she saw—

Before the door behind them burst open—

Was the woman in red standing still.

Waiting.

As if she had known this moment would come.

And accepted it.

The door slammed shut behind them.

And everything changed.
