Chapter 21 - CHAPTER 21 — Run

The door slammed shut behind them.

And the silence that followed—

Didn't last.

"Run."

David's voice cut through the moment sharply.

Amara didn't hesitate.

With Lila held tightly against her, she turned and moved toward the narrow back corridor, her heartbeat pounding louder with every step.

Behind them—

A crash.

The front door had been forced open.

Voices followed.

Low.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

"They're inside," Amara whispered.

"I know," David replied, already scanning ahead.

The corridor was dim, barely lit by a flickering overhead bulb. The walls felt too close, the air too tight.

"Stay with me," he said firmly.

"I'm not going anywhere," Amara replied, tightening her hold on Lila.

Lila's small arms wrapped around her neck.

"What's happening?" she whispered, fear creeping into her voice.

Amara swallowed hard.

"We're just going somewhere safe," she said softly. "I've got you."

Her voice stayed calm.

Even though everything inside her was unraveling.

Behind them—

Footsteps.

Faster now.

"They're coming," David said.

They reached the end of the corridor.

A metal door.

Locked.

Amara's heart dropped.

"It's locked," she said.

David stepped forward immediately, grabbing the handle.

"Move," he said.

He pulled once.

Nothing.

Again.

Still nothing.

The footsteps behind them grew louder.

Closer.

"David—" Amara started.

He didn't respond.

Instead—

He stepped back.

Then drove his shoulder hard into the door.

A loud crack echoed.

The door shook—

But didn't open.

"Again," Amara said, her voice tight.

David hit it a second time.

Harder.

This time—

The lock snapped.

The door burst open.

Cold air rushed in.

Freedom.

"Go," David said.

Amara didn't wait.

She stepped outside into the dark alley, her eyes scanning quickly.

Empty.

For now.

David followed, slamming the door behind them.

"Which way?" Amara asked.

David looked around quickly.

Then pointed left.

"That way," he said.

They moved fast.

Footsteps echoing against concrete.

Breath heavy.

Lila clung tightly to Amara, silent now.

Too scared to speak.

Halfway down the alley—

A sound.

An engine.

Amara froze.

A black SUV turned the corner slowly.

Too slowly.

Like it was looking for them.

"They're outside too," she whispered.

David's expression darkened.

"Of course they are," he said.

He grabbed her arm gently but firmly.

"This way," he said, pulling her toward a narrow side path.

They slipped into the shadows just as the SUV rolled past the alley entrance.

Amara held her breath.

The vehicle paused.

For a second—

Too long.

Then—

It moved on.

Only slightly.

"They're scanning," David whispered.

Amara's heart pounded louder.

"What do we do?" she asked.

David looked around.

Thinking fast.

Then—

"We need distance," he said. "And we need to disappear."

Amara nodded.

But something didn't feel right.

She turned slightly—

Back toward the building.

Toward the woman in red.

"What about her?" she asked.

David's jaw tightened.

"She knew what she was doing," he said.

"That doesn't mean we leave her," Amara replied.

Before he could respond—

A loud bang echoed from inside the building.

Then another.

Amara flinched.

Her heart dropped instantly.

"No…" she whispered.

David grabbed her hand.

"We can't go back," he said firmly.

Amara hesitated.

Pain flashing across her face.

But she knew he was right.

Because now—

It wasn't just about her.

It was about Lila.

"Okay," she said finally.

Her voice steady again.

Determined.

"Then we move."

David nodded.

They stepped out from the shadows carefully.

The SUV was gone.

But the danger wasn't.

Not even close.

They moved quickly down the street, blending into the quiet night.

But neither of them noticed—

The second vehicle parked across the road.

Engine off.

Lights dark.

Watching.

Waiting.

Inside—

A man lowered a pair of binoculars slowly.

His expression unreadable.

"Target confirmed," he said into a low device.

A pause.

Then—

"Proceed to phase two."

Amara and David disappeared into the distance.

Unaware—

That the real chase…

Had just begun.
