Chapter 7 - Windan Empire

Months passed and Kyle hadn't left Sacred Sound's home.

He sat in the living room, his leg jimmying and fingers fidgeting, trying to ignore his restlessness. Sacred Sound, like most times, wasn't home and so, he was left to his thoughts.

'I can't take this anymore.' Kyle stood and walked to the front door.

He opened it and walked out into the deep forest. After a couple weeks, he and Sacred Sound had a proper talk and she told him which direction led into the town, so he knew the path to avoid.

The forest canopy filtered out the sunlight, letting only a few beams meet the forest grounds.

A small wind blew and Kyle inhaled the woody, moist scent.

So lost in the sensation, he closed his and bumped head first into a tree.

His eyes flew open and he glared at the tree as his hand rubbed his head.

A small crunch made him shoot his head to the side and he noticed a small nest that had fallen off the tree.

Unfortunately, the single egg within had not survived the fall.

Kyle sighed and knelt beside the ruined egg, "Sorry for killing you. I swear it was not my intention." He knew his apology was pointless but it soothed him.

If he caused a lesser creature unintentional harm and didn't let his guilt be known, he'd be no better than the gods.

"Rest in peace." He closed his eyes for a brief moment.

When they opened, he saw a grey, translucent hatchling floating over the egg yolk.

'Wait, what?' The hatchling grew rapidly, growing feathers and its beak strengthening.

Soon, a mature bird was in place of it.

Before Kyle could react, the bird burst into a dissipating mist of grey energy.

He traced the vanishing wisps with his eyes and soon found himself staring, eyes wide at what he saw.

Hundreds, no thousands, maybe hundred of thousands of grey translucent beings were soaring through the sky.

More appeared as some disappeared, keeping their number fairly balanced.

"What are you looking at?" Sacred Sound asked, suddenly appearing beside him.

Kyle turned to her and eyed her armour before looking back at the sky only to find it normal, what he had been looking at was no longer there.

'What had I been looking at?' His eyebrows furrowed.

Perhaps he had been bird watching, he didn't know.

He turned to Sacred Sound again, "I don't know. Guess I was checking out nature?" His tone implied his reply was more a question than a response.

She shrugged and turned around, "When you're done sightseeing, come meet me inside."

Kyle turned back to the nest and his forehead creased. This wasn't the first time he had forgotten something he had just been doing.

'Huh? What was I thinking about?' The more he tried to remember what he had been contemplating, the more the memory seemed to evade him.

He walked around for a while before heading back to Sacred Sound.

When he opened the door, he saw her sitting on the sofa with her legs propped against the coffee table.

She nodded to the sofa adjacent to her and he walked to it.

He sat and waited.

"Let me go straight to the point. You'll have to be moved." Her tone was as calm as someone talking about the weather and not the weight of a life.

Sacred Sound observed the twitches of Kyle's eyes but stayed silent.

When she had seen him in the forest, the symphony he had was far louder than ever. She couldn't have him with her for more than one reason.

Kyle stood and stumbled forward a little, "But I will get killed." He gritted his teeth.

He knew it. They were all the same.

Sacred Sound's eyes squinted, "If my involvement still resulted in your death, I would have never bothered."

She stood and left him in the living room.

Kyle stood silent. Had he jumped to conclusions, claiming Sacred Sound to be evil?

He crashed into the sofa and ran a shaky hand through his hair.

Soon, he drifted off to sleep.

A hand shook Kyle awake and his eyes slowly opened.

He saw Sacred Sound standing over him. The lights were turned off and inside the house was as dark as the night outside.

"Follow me." She walked to the door and opened it, leaving the house.

He stood, hesitating a bit before following her. The dark forest around him hardly bothered him.

Rather, what did was Sacred Sound's secrecy and her urgent strides as they navigated through the forest.

Kyle looked up at the moonless sky and sighed, increasing his pace.

As they moved, Kyle noticed that their steps were too silent to be normal. No leaves or twigs were crunching under their feet.

He looked down and saw himself step on a leaf yet it was silent underneath his feet.

His eyes flashed to Sacred Sound's back, 'Is she silencing our movement?'

A hooded figure stood out in a small clearing within the forest.

Despite the darkness around him, he seemed to stand out in a way that couldn't be ignored.

A ball of disgust similar to when he woke up in Sacred Sound's home rose up in him.

Kyle continued to follow her but a glare escaped his eyes as they approached the man.

Sacred Sound beside the man and started speaking to him. Yet Kyle couldn't hear a thing despite being only a few meters away.

Both of them stopped talking and the man turned to Kyle, "So this is him?" Kyle actually heard the question.

Sacred Sound nodded, "Yes, this is him. You know what to do."

Kyle took a step back and the man took a step forward, "Are you ready kid? You're going to the Windan Empire."
