Chapter 13 - Battle

The air around Kyle reeled back in fear of what was to come.

He kicked against the deck and he vanished in a purple haze.

Kyle appeared hundreds of meters in the air, a wild thrill in his eyes.

They landed on the closest squid. It was a few meters away but Kyle threw out his fist nonetheless.

The air in front of his fist twisted on itself before violently detonating, sending a pulse of chaotic energy surging forward.

A thundering boom resounded as the pulse ripped through the sound barrier.

The flesh of the squid tore as soon as it made contact with the energy. It was dead in less than a second.

"Wonderful!!" Kyle's voice cracked out some more, losing its cohesion and turning to a roaring echo.

He spun his body mid-air, kicking out his foot.

Another pulse ripped through the air and then a squid and then another.

Gravity pulled Kyle back to the boat and he landed with the grace of a falling rock.

The deck shattered under his feet and splinters dug into them but he barely registered the pain.

More squids were filling the sky, becoming more visible by the second.

"Second time's the charm." He moved slightly and vanished, soaring through the air once more.

Mid-flight, the purple light behind his eyes diminished and his feet squelched, expelling the splinters and his feet returned to their prime condition.

Kyle swung wildly, the force generating pulses and harsh winds that threw the squids back.

Reaching for one, Kyle gripped its tentacles with his bare hands and pulled them in opposite directions.

He ripped the beast in half and threw both halves into the waters below.

A tentacle reached for him from behind and Kyle spun around in time for it to wrap around his arm.

"You'll be useful." He stabbed his fingers into its body and ripped it in two.

As he fell, he aimed carefully at two falling squids.

His muscles clenched and hummed with energy, "Fly." He let the parts loose with a bang.

Recoil shattered his joints and they healed as quickly as they had broken, completely unnoticed by Kyle.

The pieces shredded through a few squids, painting the air with their blood.

Kyle landed softly on the deck and turned his focus on the many beasts.

Multiple had managed to slip past him and were tearing through the deck with their rotten beaks.

"How distasteful." He dashed forward, his movements a blur and covered the distance in less than a breath.

Kyle ripped a squid off the deck and pressed both arms on both sides of its body, crushing it.

The light behind his eye flickered. What was once a wild light was now reduced a mere ember.

A veil of reality outside human perception revealed itself to Kyle and a few new spectres gained his attention.

Grey, translucent squids swam through the air.

"Fuel."

A hungry vortex swole from Kyle and slowly spread out in all directions. The spectres of the squids he had killed and other dead aquatic animals, rushed into the eye of the vortex.

Their bodies ground into fine energy, filling Kyle with a renewed vigor.

His body blurred and came into focus as he dashed around the deck, ripping apart squids with the efficiency of a predator.

Kyle's head shot to the sky and he scowled. There were still thousands falling to the ship.

He squatted, clenching his muscles and keeping his focus on the sky.

Purple flares of energy left his body, scarring the deck.

A smile curled at the corner of his lips and the then he kicked the deck.

The deck shattered, rocking the ship and propelling Kyle into the air.

He covered the distance to the legion of squids in mere moments.

Kyle's momentum slowed and he took a second to admire the scenery before him.

It was like he was amidst rain of flesh and perverted creations.

"Burn."

A large sphere of purple light erupted from Kyle with him at the epicenter.

It sizzled in the air, corroding the flesh of the squids until there was nothing left, not even ash.

Grey spectres appeared and were hurriedly devoured by the vortex, reigniting the purple light consuming Kyle.

He fell unceremoniously to the bare remains of the deck.

Hoodie was laying at the edge of the ship, hardly keeping balance.

His skin had gained some colour back but he still seemed pale.

Kyle's eyes turned to the distance and he took a step, "Next, the gods."

The air shook as a deafening roar resounded through it.

Kyle's eardrums trembled and exploded before healing faster than he could blink.

The ocean under the ship stirred and a giant tentacle pierced the surface, reaching for Kyle.

Kyle kicked the deck meeting the tentacle mid-way.

He threw his fist and the two collided with a massive detonation of energy.

Both Kyle and the tentacle were flung back.

He crashed into the deck and stood immediately, pulling out a giant piece of wood embedded in his chest.

The gaping wound sealed itself.

Kyle glared at the tentacle yet he didn't move. The fierce purple light surrounding since the beginning of the fight had been greatly diminished.

'I need to stop and conserve energy.' He reasoned.

"NO!!! THEY ARE THE SPAWN OF THE GODS!!! THAT IS THEIR CREATION!! WE MUST END IT NOW!!" A multitude of voices spoke through Kyle and for the first time, his body moved against his will.

It took a step, clenching its fists and the world turned dark.

***

Kyle gasped and his eyes flew open. He immediately scanned the ship and saw everything in pristine order.

The deck was clearly restored and the ship was sailing smoothly. It was like nothing had happened.

A strong headache pulsed through Kyle's head causing him to wince.

"My head."

He turned to the steering wheel and saw Hoodie gentle steering the ship.

"What happened? Was it a dream?"

Kyle his head around and the air left his lungs. The outline of a gaint tentacle could be seen from the distance and the ocean water there was stained with blood.

"Care to explain what I saw?"
