Chapter 38 - BOOK 2 — CHAPTER 6: OBSERVATION SHIFT

The moment the system changed its state, the world felt heavier.

Not physically.

Mentally.

Like something unseen had started pressing attention onto them.

Mira looked around uneasily. "…Why does it feel like we're being watched harder now?"

Ashar's expression stayed tight. "…Because we are."

Eryx didn't move.

His eyes stayed fixed on the empty space ahead.

"…It's not just observing anymore," he said quietly.

Mira frowned. "Then what is it doing?"

Eryx paused.

"…Studying reaction."

A faint distortion formed again in the distance.

But this time, it didn't create a figure.

It created a mirror-like surface.

Floating.

Still.

Reflective.

Mira stepped back instantly. "…I don't like that."

Ashar's voice dropped. "…Don't look into it too long."

Eryx walked forward instead.

"…Why?"

Ashar didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"…Because it doesn't reflect you."

Silence.

Eryx stopped in front of it.

The surface shimmered.

And slowly—

a version of him appeared inside.

But wrong.

Not Echo-like.

Not unstable.

Just… empty.

Like a version that had removed everything unnecessary.

Mira whispered, "…That's him?"

Ashar nodded slightly. "…A projected optimal state."

Eryx stared at it.

"…So that's what they want me to become."

The reflection moved.

But Eryx didn't.

It spoke first.

> "You are inefficient."

Eryx replied calmly. "…And you are what?"

> "Stable."

A pause.

> "You resist correction."

Eryx tilted his head slightly.

"…What happens if I don't resist?"

The reflection answered instantly.

> "You disappear as conflict."

Silence dropped hard.

Mira clenched her fists. "…That's not living."

The reflection turned slightly toward her.

> "Living is not required."

Ashar muttered, "…It's offering replacement logic."

Eryx stepped closer.

The mirror didn't break.

It reacted.

Subtly.

Like it was adjusting to him instead of the other way around.

"…You're not me," Eryx said.

The reflection answered:

> "Not yet."

A pause.

> "But you are trending toward convergence."

Eryx's eyes narrowed.

"…And if I refuse convergence?"

The surface flickered.

For the first time.

Uncertainty.

Then:

> "ERROR: UNRESOLVABLE OUTCOME."

The mirror destabilized slightly.

Mira stepped forward. "…Eryx, it's glitching—"

Ashar snapped sharply. "…Don't interrupt it."

Eryx raised his hand slowly.

The space around it bent again.

Not aggressively.

Naturally.

"…So even you don't know what I am," he said quietly.

Silence.

Then the reflection began fading.

But before disappearing, it spoke one last time:

> "You are becoming the reason we recalculate."

And then—

it vanished.

The world returned to silence.

But it wasn't empty anymore.

It was uncertain.
